CdnShetlander
Hello from Canada!I have recently started to search for my Shetland roots. I have had wonderful luck at Bayanne (amazing collection!) I've created an extensive family tree on My Heritage site, as well, I have done a DNA test, which led me to actually tracing 2 living Shetland descendants!! Very excited about that.I've managed to trace my roots back 6 (possibly 7 generations) and I am confident that until the 7th generation I have correct information.Herein lies my 'problem' Bayanne takes me back to a ? Robertson... B: before 1720, although 2 sons are named, John Robertson B: 1745 died; before 21 Nov 1786, with his 3 children named as 1. Robert ROBERTSON, b. Abt 1766, Bardister, Walls, SHI, SCT http://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/img/tng_search_small.gif, d. UNKNOWN + 2. Agnes JOHNSDAUGHTER, b. 1765, SHI, SCT http://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/img/tng_search_small.gif, d. Aft 1841 (Age > 77 years) + 3. Umphray JOHNSDAUGHTER, b. 1770, Bardister, Walls, SHI, SCT http://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/img/tng_search_small.gif, d. 21 Apr 1842, Stove, Walls, SHI, SCT http://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/img/tng_search_small.gif (Age 72 years) I have this information in my tree. The family tree site sends me 'matches, records etc" thru this I connected with another person who was also building a tree.. when I added this person to my tree, I was not aware that I had given permission (changed the settings) to allow them to make changes, or add anything to my site (that has now been corrected!!!) However, not before some damage was done.I am now seeking help as to confirmation that the information they had added is correct, if the (? Robertson is actually Thomas Robertson born in Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, married to Elizabeth BROOM, also born in Stirlingshire)When they added this information, I ended up with TWO Thomas Robertson, born on the same date, however, the Bayanne site indicates he was born in shetland, married to Catherine Brown...but the information auto populated the second Thomas Robertson as having been born in Stirlingshire also! I hardly think she could have given birth to 2 sons, on the same day, one in Scotland, the other in Shetland! Elizabeth BROOM had subsequent children born after Thomas in 1745, but not in Shetland!!It would be so much easier to sort thru this if the names were all not so similar! My tree consists of Hay, Gray, Hunter, Jamieson, Inkster, Tait, Moffat just to name a few!ANY help, guidance, or direction I can go to figure this out would be most appreciated! I've been trying to fix this for a couple months now, and have been googling my fingers off trying to do so!!Kindly,Julie Keedle
paulb
ive had a similar problem with family search im not a fan of others just altering your tree. unless your family links to Stirlingshire with the use of JOHNSDAUGHTER, i would be more inclined to believe they are Shetlanders. CdnShetlander
Thank you. I've sent what this other person added to the admin @ Bayanne, and he has pretty much convinced me the information this person added is not my lineage! I did not realize that someone joining my tree could actually add, edit etc. I quickly changed those settings that I am the only one permitted to do so!Now to start deleting it all!! ff59
Hi, I have been looking at your advert and looking at bayanne. I think that you could be a far out relation of my father.
RileyBKing
In addition to Bayanne, the Shetland Family History Society has an extensive database which is not accessible online, and a wealth of info held by individual members. They can be contacted at www.shetland-fhs.org.uk, or secretary@shetland-fhs.org.uk, or at 6 Hillhead Lerwick ZE1 0EJ.
