Vikings in Edinburgh?

So, whats the story with what seems to have become an annual pilgrimage to Edinburgh at newerdy for the Lerrik Jarl squad?

Is this just a jaunt for the boys, paid for by themselves/UHA funds, or is there supposed to be some greater 'community benefit', and/or the rest of us are footing the bill out of some form of taxation or another?

Not wanting to spoil a half decent opportunity for a good argument but, I'll have a go anyhow... :thmbsup

Let them have their fun...   This time of year, the Jarl Squad are "yesterdays men" anyhow.

However,  if the good people of Lerwick were to get their act together then, there would be some kind of "proper" New Year celebration here and, maybe the Jarl Squad would be unable to attend Edinburgh due to "prior commitments".

Just a thought....

Never did understand the New York bit myself..  Maybe it's because just about everything to do with the place seems to be "fake".  Might as well throw a few "Hollywood Vikings" into the mix....

I can see some logic in going to New York helping raise the profile of Shetland in the US and hopefully positively influencing the tourist trade, but Edinburgh in the middle of winter?

Every couch potato in Scotland has been spoon few UHA every year for decades, its not news to them like to your average yank, and the Edinburgh Newerdy onkerry last I saw any of one was nothing more than an unholy slesteration with far too many with next to no recollection come the end of it what they'd seen or done during it.

Turns out the event is paid for by Edinburgh Council, the Scottish Government and the EU so if the squad ain't paying for their own travel and accommodation; yep, tax payers are paying for it.

Just because the event gets some public funding doesn't mean the squad gets travel and accommodation paid. As far as I'm aware, the squad members usually pay to travel to events. It's an expensive business being in the Jarl Squad!

Perhaps you should ask the committee if you want to know the specifics of particular trips - http://www.uphellyaa.org/contact

There are 100s of visitors to Shetland each year for UHA which is great for the economy in a usually slow time of year (try booking accommodation for visitors. You need to book months in advance) and the global coverage Shetland gets from UHA can only be a good thing.
