Cheers Jeemsie. I forgot that the Shetland Hotel wasn't being used anymore.

I'm asking on behalf of a work colleague who is heading up for it this year. What hall would you recommend? I was going to point them in the direction of either Clickimin or Bells Brae.

Also does anyone know when the tickets are available from? Is it always after Christmas?

I think you would be right with your recommendations. But I would say go for Clickimin. bell's Brae is much more a younger persons hall IMO. As for when tickets are avaliable, that is up the the Hosts and Hostesses I think. The best plan though is to get in touch with a host/ hostess and get your name down for a ticket asap. Does anyone know who the hosts/ hostesses are for Clickimin?

Hi,

my next trip to Shetland will be for Up Helly Aa 2009 in Lerwick. I know that there will be a torch-light procession, the burning of a longship and after this dancing in the halls.

What is there more to do, especialy during the daytime of Tuesday 17th and the day after ?

If you haven't done so already, you'll need to secure tickets if you wish to go to a hall after the procession. Someone based in Shetland may be able to give you more details on how to do this.

There is a parade on the main street (Commercial Street and the Esplanade) on Up Helly Aa day, and then the Jarl squad will pose in their galley, which is located on the pier, for photographs. I'm not sure what else is on but you should perhaps check out this thread:

There are also various hops at different venues througout Lerwick on the Wednesday night, also known as the hop night.

There's the 'Fiery Sessions' in the Garrison Theatre, Lerwick, at 2 - 4.30pm on Tuesday 27th (Up Helly Aa day)

It's a concert featuring local traditional musicians. The line-up so far includes Maggie Adamson & Brian Nicolson; Jillian Isbister (singing dialect songs); Kaela Jamieson, Astryd Jamieson & Mary Rutherford and the Cullivoe Fiddlers. The Junior Jarl squad also visit at about 3.30 (the line-up might change as it's a very busy day for local musicians, but I'll keep you posted)

There's also a stand up comedy night planned (Stand Up Helly Aa!) for the evening at the Garrison. I'll let you know when the line-up for that is confirmed. Watch this space...

Tickets for these events will be available from the Shetland Box Office at Islesburgh Community Centre (01595 745555)

(I'll merge this thread to the existing Up Helly Aa thread in the Shetland News section when I get a chance)

Is there just going to be the one venue for this in '09 or is it split with Islesburgh?

Hmmm, looks like I'll be missing another stand-up event. Sometime.

Just the Garrison this year

Which, presumably, will make the tickets very hard to get. If I remember right, it was sold-out in 2007 with both venues running, and tickets only on sale from UHA morning. What happened in 2008? When do they go on sale for '09?

The person from Germany who was enquring was also asking about the day after UHA. Is there any provision made for visitors for the day after? From what I've heard they're wandering around/driving around looking for places that are open and things to do. I think the Eshaness Café might have been switched on and opened that day, but I'm not 100% sure.
