I see someone else looking for 3 tickets in the classifieds section.

Pubs etc. will be open - not sure closing times? There's always something on for sure though! Not everyone want's to go to the halls so there is always alternative entertainment. There's the hop night too the next night.

Bis bald.

Andy Steven was on Radio Shetland tonight saying that Visit Shetland hoped to broadcast Up Helly Aa live this year by webcam.

It'll be on the 60 North TV streaming channel - http://www.shetland.org/60NTV

Where is the best place to go to party in the evening?

Just saw that the town hall hosts the official party but it's sold out.

Any ideas?

There's the Stand Up Helly Aa comedy night at the Garrison Theatre after the procession - http://www.shetlandarts.org/stand-up-helly-aa-at-garrison

As far as I'm aware, most of the pubs are open too

Wasn't awar of the fact that we need tickets.

I'm both surprised and unsurprised by this. Surprised because you seemed to be so well organised with your early preparations. Unsurprised because the event is fundamentally not aimed at tourists, yet is being promoted as such by tourism bodies without realising that tourists need a bit more information. Tourists have always been made welcome, but unlike many similar regional events, attracting them is not the event's objective.

It is interesting to note that Visit Shetland's page hasn't been updated since last year:

On a similar point, have you provided any info on this years Fiery Sessions concert? I've searched both the SAT site and the music one but only found previous years' events. I'm curious to find out who will be playing this year?

It comes down to the availability of musicians during the day;
Well despite that, the resulting line-up listed on the Shetland Times site is quite something.
Shetland Arts – Fiery Sessions in Garrison Theatre, 2pm with Bryan Gear & Violet Tulloch, Maggie Adamson & Brian Nicholson, Brack da Brod, Junior Jarl Squad etc, tickets £8 / £6 Shetland Box Office 01595 745555

In my opinion the two best Shetland fiddlers. Certainly not a "who can we get, scrape the barrel" selection.

If you're keen you'll get tickets. There's always a few tickets come available in the days leading up to Up Helly Aa

There's a dozen halls open - you really should go to one of the halls if you can or you're missing the most social part of the whole event.

Best bet would be to contact Radio Shetland and explain you're travelling from Germany - they'll put out a request for anyone with spare tickets to get in touch.

Also suggest you put a classified ad on the Shetland News website looking for tickets.

You need to do this asap though.

p.s. you are aware that the halls are open from after the procession ends @ 9pm till 8am the next day and it's partytime and dancing all night?

There's a dozen halls open -

Not this year. No Grand/Posers so only eleven.

No great loss, it was crap anyway :?

That may well be the case but all hosts etc put in a great deal of work to open as a hall. Also if you lost another hall there would be a big problem.

We're getting soft in our old age, 30 yrs ago the Marts was open as a hall and now we need a £12 million state of the art building

The Masonic should get their finger out, good hall and well placed between AHS @ Town Hall.

The Grand was always rubbish as a hall, access nightmare and not big enough, no reflection on the hosts efforts at all but they really had their work cut out to try to make it work.

A few photos. Nothing spectacular, weather wasn't very good for photo taking.
