George.
It would certainly be useful if both drivers and pedestrians knew what all forms of pedestrian crossings in the U.K. are, and how they are designed to be legally and correctly used. Frances144
That "thing" outside M&Co and Thule Bar is a strange one. I had to physically stop some cruise-liner passengers from hurling themselves under passing traffic there. They assumed it was some sort of foreign zebra crossing. I assured them it was not. Shetland_boys
so just to clarify, do we not need to stop for people at that thing then? i dont but have always wondered what it was
BigMouth
Was it like this when the roundabouts were built!?
Suffererof1crankymofo
so just to clarify, do we not need to stop for people at that thing then? i dont but have always wondered what it was I thought we always had to stop for pedestrians in the road (saves on carnage ). I recall several years ago in London and think I've mentioned this before on here ... ... A mate was a motorcycle courier. He was driving along Clerkenwell Road and ended up in the doorway of a magician's shop because a pedestrian had stepped out onto a zebra crossing without looking. He wasn't speeding and was driving in accordance with the road and weather conditions, etc. The pedestrian started to have a go at my mate (who had several hundreds of pounds' worth of damage to his CX500 and I think, if I mind right, he'd broke his leg). Thankfully, there was a police officer who witnessed the entire thing and nicked the pedestrian!
Wheelsup
Basically it’s bad form to run into a person or car even theyre in the wrong. You have to use your judgement to avoid hitting them, you shouldn’t have to stop for them if they are just standing on the pavement looking. Try to avoid eye contact as this only encourages them. Frances144
https://www.shetland.gov.uk/news-advice/Drivers-pedestrians-take-care.aspThis sort of implies they are "zebra" crossings but I am pretty sure they are "traffic calming measures". I had a quick look around the HIghway Code for a definition of what they were and could find nowt.

Wheelsup
Yes I think the 20mph starts before you get to the roundabout at th3 foot of Knab road/Muckle Kirk. Probably for the school kids.

crofterlady
I was vexed to hear about the poor lady run over on a pelican crossing last Friday however, I'm not surprised as the lighting in the town is dire, to say the least. You'd need a blinkey just to walk aboot!!
Wheelsup
Yes , I noticed the lighting at the Viking Bus station is particularly poor and difficult to see people waiting to cross at night. You really need to anticipate the possibility of people crossin* and adjust your speed accordngly
