Wheelsup
Good site for a "proper Italian" pizza place. But it would need to be quality service.
wotsit
Is this a possible reason why Planning do not want Parkgate Pizza restaurant near Voe, suggesting perhaps he could use Osla's, as the Lerwick folk can walk to that and he would be using what would become an empty shop in Lerwick ? Ghostrider
^ One would hope not (but I suspect you may be right), as if they are it amounts to the SIC hired help dictating by the back door to folk where they can open a business. Communism or Fascism much. The Street is dead, its long past time to give it a decent burial instead of relentlessly trying and failing to jolt life back in to a corpse. Fly-on-the-Wall
Vexed to hear that Osla's is on the market.................. Maybe Sandwick couple Emilie and Ben Gray can encourage more of those people who backed their campaign to buy two £45 shares in Brewdog. See ShetNews article from 13 November - this bunch could perhaps give Lerwick a shake up on customer service. This could be the start of something good, not just another nail in the coffin of Commercial Street. How's about some positivity and 'festive cheer' whalsa
Ghostrider
^ Turn it in to a strip/pole dance/lap dance club, that would soon get the old street heavin again. BGDDisco
BGDDisco
^ Turn it in to a strip/pole dance/lap dance club, that would soon get the old street heavin again. That was an idea I had for Smith & Harpers. Can you imagine the response from Planning if I'd gone with it!!
wotsit
They might have gone with it, and pulled through strings to get it passed depending on who it was.
suuusssiiieee
Having watched 'Orkney - when the boat comes in last night' on BBC1 i was amazed at the difference between Kirkwall's Albert St. and Commercial St. Albert St, seems to be thriving, with all premises nearly occupied, new businesses opening up, and a general buzz around the whole area. It's clean, has cafe's/bistro that look appealing, also not to mention pubs where you can get a meal with your pint. Commercial St. on the other had is sadly the complete opposite. Clearly the cruise trade makes a difference down there, and were never going to match them for that, but just looking at Albert St. as an example Commercial St. has long term problems that aren't going to go away with the odd fun run around the lanes or a few picnic tables. Wheelsup
In the Scottish Tourism figures I saw Orkney gets over 80,000 more visitors than Shetland per year, which naturally allows hospitality and craft businesses to grow. They are greatly helped by short sea crossings and much cheaper fares. They also have an incredible wealth of archaeology thrown in.
Property2017
The Town is improving though with the recent openings of Shetland food larder and the up and coming bigger Beervana, plus Montery Jacks, what needs sorted though is the Noost to be bought, something done with the old Televradio shop, and when the chemists move that needs gutted and redone into something good, then finally the mess that is the tattie shop. fionajohn
the S I C ... Should think on their name SIC sick in thinking and action ..they were the reason for the demise of the street ...get someone with a real sense of judgement and prospect to plan the future for what could be a vibrant area
Ghostrider
The butcher and the baker are long gone, and now the pubs are starting to close down. How much more writing needs to be on the wall for the street before it's allowed a dignified death to put it out of its misery.
Property2017
The butcher and baker are long gone ? , does Tesco not having something to do with that ? You pair are terrible and totally misguided blaming the town centre state on the SIC only , what about internet shopping ???

Na, you've missed out the best new addition to the street - Mirrie Dancers Chocolatier.
suuusssiiieee
"The town is improving", sorry but are you having a laugh, it's abysmal! Honestly take a long hard look at it, it's shabby, dirty, unappealing and frankly an embarrassment. This is a dying entity i'm afraid, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear....
