Popular Post Ghostrider
Seen a couple of folk post pics of it on F/B today.....Is that thing permanent? I so, WTF? Why? What demented eedjit thought it was even anything remotely like a good idea? I was hoping it was something temporary/UHA related/whatever......but, knowing the Cooncil...... P.S. If the T was such a great big nasty no-no on the wall alongside, how come SHETLAND is okay. We need to be told. Lerwick antiques
That is the SIC's idea of a bicycle stand. Went up around the same time as they were putting the speed bumps in. Not heard how much it caused, but it was probably a small fortune.

suuusssiiieee
Iv'e seen one bike lashed to it so far in it's time erected, a roaring success i'd say. It's more a hazard for drunks stumbling out of the Thule tbh brecken and Frances144

Frances144
I guess its for the cruise-liner folk who may get in a muddle - "But if it's Tuesday, it has to be Siena"!
Ghostrider
Photo?or is that stainless steel effort spelling out our island? Yes, that's the one. Shows how often the great delights of LL's street entices me to visit the Esplanade, that I never knew it was there before now. suuusssiiieee
Ghostrider
That is the SIC's idea of a bicycle stand. It is? I'd never have guessed from the pics.....Maybe it looks a bit more bicycle standish in person.... Why, though, for whom?..... Was this to be King Gary Robinson's personal parking spot when he was in lycra mode and nipped in for a pint, but he got de-throned before it was put up, or something. 90+% of the bikes you see are kids on BMX type efforts, who don't park much as a rule, unless at shop doors when they go in. Windwalker
They are maybe getting things ready fir when they ban vehicles in the town centre altogether, and the only way you can get in is on a bike. Mind you you would be able to avoide to “cushions” or lumps of concrete wit sharp edges.
Frances144
I never thought this was a bike stand. I mean seriously, is that what it is? And where are these plethora of bikes? This isn't Amsterdam/Oxford/London (other bike-friendly towns may apply). Will we soon have Lerwick-Bikes like Boris Bikes?(and does that mean the elder brother version at Mavis Grind is a bike stand too?)
Lerwick antiques
Mind at one Living Lerwick AGM meeting I was at. They were speaking about painting the bollards up to look like minions. That's how low the big plans sink.

That's how low the big plans sink. There's comedy value there, for all the wrong reasons. Whoever dreamed it up probably thought it was a brilliant idea. What were they going to come up with next, chessboard and hopcotch squares laid in to the street to keep the bairns amused....
Lerwick antiques
I agree Ghostie, certainly a comedy show. It was their idea of making da street and esplanade look more attractive. Think us shop keepers and the shoppers have far bigger issues than thinking about minion bollards. You couldn't write it, if you did, no one would believe that this is the ideas of "experts" on making the town better and improving footfall. Popular Post Ghostrider
^ As a potential shopper, I look for convenience and accessibility when it comes to checking out if what I'm interested in is stocked on the street, and at a reasonable cost. What the place looks like, and gimmicks aren't going to affect it one little bit. The old taxi rank at the back of Anderson's has long since been blocked off behind a silly little wall, Irvine Place/Harrison Square is now largely if not completely closed to vehicles I understand, the back of the old Medical Hall now seems mostly taken up with tables and chairs belonging the Peerie Shop cafe most half decent days, they allowed M&Co to build over what was behind that shop, they're blocked off Burns Walk to vehicles and wasted everything at the back of the Bank to some arty farty supposed bike rack and a few seats. So basically, from the Cross to Charlotte Street convenience and accessibility has gone right down the tubes compared to what it once was - that doesn't leave much street to be going on with. thebfg, Windwalker and Lerwick antiques
