MuckleJoannie
Not everybody is happy https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/16899079.environmental-groups-protest-as-energy-giant-makes-significant-gas-discovery-off-shetland/
blue beetle
Yun lot are never happy. We would all freeze or starve to death if they were in charge. I wonder if they have ever looked at a globe. Scotland is a very very small country. And only a very small bit of it is populated. I cant see how Scotland has ever done anything to cause global warming . And more to the point give,n its miniscule size there isn't much that Scotland can ever do to slow global warming down. The hypocrisy of our MSP,s is also laughable. Wittering on about renewables and co2 emissions one minute and welcoming this gas find the next. Popular Post blue beetle
I see the Shetland times are struggling with this discovery as well. Hidden away on page 5 all aboot dir FOE pals moaning , While the front page is full of "Ghastly" wind farm headlines. Well whats it to be fossil fuels or renewables . Mak your minds up bairns. Nearly as bad as greenpeace charging all over the ocean in a diesel powered ship protesting aboot oil exploration. Colin
Catch 22. You need one to manufacture the other.
George.
Catch 22. You need one to manufacture the other.Yes, you do need to use fossil fuels to make up renewables. Once they're up and running you stop using fossil fuels, and that means you cut out producing the pollution that poisons the world. There's no catch in that. Guest PJS1979
Has any less oil or gas been burnt in the power stations since the wind turbines that are here were erected ? Why have those figures not been released ???
George.
Why have those figures not been released ???Perhaps the hydro don't want us to know how little power they have to generate to keep everybody supplied nowadays. Perhaps they don't want us to know just how much power is generated by wind power, solar power etc. Perhaps we'll get supplied by Orkney and their tidal energy soon. Perhaps the power station will turn into a hotel, and sooner than we'd expect. Edited September 29, 2018 by George.
Guest PJS1979
Wrong George , the fact is that there has not been any significant reduction in the amount of fossil fuels used , actually when they try and run the power station down and use the wind energy it burns much less efficiently and creates dirtier flue gases. That in itself indicates how inefficient they are and is no more than them shooting themselves in the foot. After all, wind power, tidal power, whatever, doesn't work that way. Green power isn't perfect but it inflicts less than one percent of pollution on us than fossil fuel generated energy does. Not only that but across Scotland green power employs more than 58k to produce the power. How many people are employed in the use of old fossilly stuff? Nigel Bridgman-Elliot
Don't we got an awful lot of stuff to make fertilizers and plastics from out of that handy fossil fuel stuff ?Related links: http://naturalgasnow.org/fertilizer-made-natural-gas-lifting-world/> Fertilizer Made with Natural Gas Is Lifting Our WorldI wonder what other resources we'd use to make that and plastics from instead to be more environmentally sustainable ?Or maybe we'll go to using old fashioned metal to replace plastics. Then things won't snap so easily..
George.
It would be a good idea for Tesco, the Co-op and every other supermarket, not to mention all the other shops, to use paper bags instead of the plastic bags that they've been using for far too long.
