Installed generating capacity increased to 388 gigawatts from wind, small-hydro, biomass, solar, geothermal and marine, with China accounting for more than 25 percent of the global total.

This about sums up the complete waste of time money and effort windmills are. They are not going to make one bit of difference for anyone, apart from those who collect rent for having them on their land. Wind doesnt blow all the time!!!! I'm sure its been mentioned. :)

More lies and distortion from Christopher Booker. This guy is a joke.

At the centre of those scandals was the discovery that the more alarming predictions made by the IPCC's major 2007 report – such as a claim that most of the Himalayan glaciers would be gone by 2035

Lie number one. The Himalayas thing was a misprint, and the only substantial mistake in a 3000 page document.

... such as that they kill vast numbers of birds and bats,

Lie number two. Vast numbers is a huge exaggeration. The number of birds killed by domestic cats or cars in a single day dwarfs the numbers killed by windturbines in their entire history.

... so unreliable, due to the intermittency of the wind, that the derisory amount of power they produce can make no significant contribution to meeting the world's energy needs.

Lie number three. Wind turbines are already making a significant contribution in the countries which have built them, and anyway, the 50% plus efficiency of Burradale proves that wind turbines in Shetland can make a significant contribution.

... it would necessitate building a score of gas-fired power stations just to provide instant back-up for whenever the wind failed to blow at the correct speeds. These would have to be kept spinning all the time,...

Lie number four. (And this one's the biggie) No, the gas power stations would not have to be kept spinning all the time. Unlike coal, gas turbines can be switched on and off at a moments notice. He's just making this up as he goes along.

That's four major lies I've found without even trying to check his figures. I expect he's making them up as well.

Well, well, VE are chapping on the door again cap in hand for another half million to be pumped into this bottomless pit ! :-

http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/1024-viking-energy-ask-for-more-cash.html

Surprise, Surprise.

Just a bunch of thieves. As far as I'm concerned.

And Mr Salmond wants the publicity to buy votes with “The old green credentials gambitâ€

But not in his own backyard. The SNP does not have the balls to say No!

And Mr.Salmond is so stuck up the backside of Europe.

All you can see the soles of his shoes.

if this is such a money maker for shetland why isnt there competition to put money into it? i would have thought local businessmen, banks etc would be champing at the bit to invest in such a great thing??

say alot that you go cap in hand to a wealthy but not a great investing council!

http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/1671-yell-wind-farm-plans-on-display.html

Only 17 turbines for nearly a quarter of the output of the VE project. I'm not sure what the proposals are to get them on site but maybe VE should have a look at this. ( At least Yell might get a decent road to Burravoe )

These are much bigger turbines than those in the VE proposal, 163m as opposed to 145m, and if they will double the output of the windfarm then they must be 7.2 MW compared to the 3.6 MW of the VE turbines.

Basic facts and figures for VE here: Key Facts and Figures

This was also in today's Shetland Times. To me it seems to be propoganda that the only way for Shetland to prospeer is allowing Viking to go ahead.

Renewable energy has become an integral part of our way of life. The early steps in this direction were fraught with controversy, but now those conflicts are almost forgotten. Shetland Charitable Trust invested heavily in the first major windfarm project, and that investment paid off, and it continues to pay off today. The trust’s fund now stands at £320 million, and trustees now have the benefit of a considerably larger budget with which to invest than was previously the case. Later renewable developments have been made with a greater degree of public support, and always the emphasis has been on community benefit, not just in terms of income but also infrastructure.

All the other suggested ways forward suggest Shetland will barely survive
