Shetland windfarm - Viking Energy

From the picture it appears as if the foundation of concrete wasn't either heavy enough, or the wrong shape to hold up against the winds.

When I last did anything like that myself, I went for a stepped inverted pyramid shape with a large diameter top piece with the idea that it wouldn't easily topple over.

Whats anyone elses thoughts on their poor design and what could have been done better ?

Are the really big turbines going to be anchored to the rock underneath ?

Artificial island wind farm plans

EXPERTS are predicting a future of man-made islands built off the coast of Britain to support wind farms.

Dutch company Kema is already proposing to spend £2.5 billion creating such an island in the North Sea.

If the venture is a success, the construction industry believes copy cat islands could be built elsewhere.

That's an awful lot of money to be followed by an "if".

Why are we still discussing this pathetic attempt to theive a bit of cash from our council.

Some of the "Global Warming" reasons for venture are comical. Does everone actually beleive global warming is happening?

The earth cooled this year! That 30% of the ice caps that everyone was worrying about last year has already re-frozen.

Carbon Foot Print!!!!! Humans couldn't affect the carbon content in the atmosphere if we tried. The little carbon we do put in the atmosphere is dwarfed in comparison to Volcanoes and Forest Fires.

Its moisture content in the atmosphere which determines the temperature.

Extra CO2 is a good thing anyway. These windmills wont make a damed bit of difference, without getting into the fact that the power will not even be used in Shetland.

(mod edit - off topic unproven allegation removed **)

Dry your eyes it might be da bast it happend tae sheland..Da oil wis gain tae be da end we some bit it made shetland

Matter of opinion, it maybe gave the council a pot of money to squander as they saw and see fit, and brought a good standard of living to many, but much of what "Shetland" was pre-oil has been made an eryse of along the way too.

Yeah, well it would wouldn't it, it's called winter.

Over the last 600,000 years the amount of CO2 has varied between 180 and 270 ppm. Since the industrial revolution it has risen to the current figure of 375 ppm (2005). This rise is man made.

Its moisture content in the atmosphere which determines the temperature.

Water vapour provides around 30% of the total greenhouse effect, CO2 around 9%, methane around 4% and ozone, around 3%. The amount of CO2 and methane in the atmosphere have increased by 31% and 149% respectively since the start of the industrial revolution.

I guess, what I'm trying to say is: Try finding out something about what you're talking about before posting as it saves embarrassment when someone points out that you are talking total rubbish.

(apologies to the mods for straying a little off-topic, but I couldn't let such an easy target pass.)

I would also like to point out that the higher and lower natural figures quoted above are the levels of CO2 from the middle of an ice age and the middle of a warm period. The difference is 90 ppm. The current figure of 375 ppm is 105 ppm higher than the normal maximum. This means that we have already changed the composition of the atmosphere by more than it is changed by an ice age.

Think about that.
