Shetland windfarm - Viking Energy

I appreciate that VE are the ones who had the initiative to come with the proposal but it is a massive investment.

We need choices, we need reliable information, we need a referendum and we do have time.

I do have this nagging worry that the VE project maybe a "flip" business. Build it, build the rep up, get a lot of people outwith Shetland interested in it and sell it on when things start looking financially dodgy for VE/SSE to someone outwith Shetland. SSE shouldn't do that kind of thing but personally I wouldn't put it past them.

This maybe "all the rage" for alternative energy just now but we don't know if something other will come up that we haven't even thought of and suddenly windfarm is very large & redundant and we're left with it.

I know a lot of folk will probably think I'm barking for writing this but these are the little things that are nagging in my head.

I don't really understand what you mean, I don't see how a wind farm can possibly be redundant unless there is suddenly no wind or no need for energy.

A new and more efficient power source (fusion?) which could be located near the consumption point would make windmills redundant.

What is the expected lifespan of a wind farm? Would it be redundant say after 50 years?

That was what I was trying to get it in a half ersed way.

I feel it's more putting all eggs in one basket instead of using different methods (tidal etc but preferable not nuclear).

Sustainable Shetland should post the signatures online, scanned in.

Y'know, like the MP's.

Could they do that? If permission wasn't sought from each person then surely that would be in breach of the DPA?

I just filed my objection online via their link.

maybe the vote should be for those living here. unlink what are you objections. having just moved up here from london were people are dying because of the heat i would have thought you would have been in favour.

its clean and its green folks and when it comes down to it. it will get built the only debate should we spend our kids money on it. remember the council have no say its your scottish mp's that will say and has they have uped the green energy commitment guess how its going to go.

democracy don't you just love it. whats to the greater good of Scotland does not mean the same as what to the greater good of Shetland.

Well, Paulb, I don't fancy miles of peat being destroyed, nor do I fancy birds being killed, nor do I fancy a large company getting away with breaking EU regulations re building them smack bang near residential homes. However, on the latter point, I reckon they'll probably opt for a compulsory purchase of said homes (if, and excuse my ignorance, CPs are exercised up here).

If Londoners and southerners gobble up all the lecky, then blooming build the windfarm in Essex - they already got a huge industrial area stretching from Tilbury to Barking and they have a couple of huge wind turbines already there. DON'T stick a windfarm on an area where there is so much wildlife and totally dilapidating the landscape which, if I was a tourist, would definitely not be something I would want to see.

It is the sheer size and scale of the thing that gets my goat, not to mention the utter contempt so far being dished out by VE that gets me. Ooh, and as for Shandwick - err I temped many years ago in their Financial PR Division but that's another story ...

Its for Scotland.

You'd be happy to push what you see as a problem to somewhere else?

Great attitude. I don't have an opinion on the windfarm but if its such a problem I wouldn't wish it on any county.
