Some more interesting info on fossil fuel subsidies here http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/aug/03/fossil-fuel-subsidies-renewables?INTCMP=SRCH.

This report does focus on global subsidies, tax break etc., but it is quite a stark difference. There are some interesting comments at the foot of the article which give a good breakdown of the situation here in the UK.

You might think the figures sound about right, but when you consider that renewables now deliver (2009 figures) 18% of the global energy supply, would renewables subsidies continue to increase as fossil fuels reduce? Less fossil fuels, less tax revenue. All gets a bit complicated, doesn't it?

P.S. Mods, does Ghostrider receive a Lifetime Achievement Award when he makes his 5000th post?!

Quote from Jim Mather re approval for Dunmaglass :-

Energy Minister Jim Mather said it also marked a further step towards greater use of "clean, green electricity" in Scotland.

He added: "Scotland already gets over a quarter of its electricity needs from green sources and consent for this new development rounds off another tremendous year for renewables.

" clean green electricity " Methinks the man is needing some professional help at the earliest opportunity !!!

Just a thought.

If they install an inter-connector, similar to those that already span the North Sea to create the Super Grid, would they also have the sense to install a Comms cable too, may be a joint venture.

I know that when I worked for a power distribution company, anything 33kv and over has a pilot cable laid with it.

A possibility for improved internet connections perhaps and more reliable telephonic system too.

That would reduce the cost of installing just the inter-connector.
