^^ I seem to remember it the same way, the council made the first move . However, who set the ball rolling behind the scenes that led to the council making the first move, you can come to your own conclusions. The same names and faces seem to crop up again and again with monotonous regularity when the SIC get dragged in to some "investment" or other.

Out of curiosity, who was/is the owner and/or occupier(s) (grazing rights holders) of the hill where Burradale is situated, does anyone know?

Lets face it, whether we agree with VE of not our voice is, as the SSE have already told us, ignored. Why don't they just start by replacing the Burradale turbines with the ones they plan for the rest of Shetland. That way we can all see just how big they will be in situ, how well they withstand the Shetland weather, how much environmental damage is done and how much noise is produced. I am sure the millionaires who back the scheme would like to invest some of their hard earned cash, (which we see none of), and earn themselves a pocketful more cash.

yes they will. but think of the cost per megawatt. now if we were paying for it then i think SS would be very loudly crying.

they are costing 4 million per megawatt. which would equal 1.2 billion to build the same number to equal VE. orkneys 1200mw farm if they use the same things will cost 4.8 billion.

so those old windmills are a lot cheaper even if you throw the interconector in as well.

Well right now I'm thinking so long as they don't want to put a (insert your own choice of expletive here)nuclear reactor here, how bad can it really be....

But you’d be perfectly happy to use ~30% of nuclear generated electricity that will come came along the cable from the mainland UK when we get connected to the national grid?

as long as its french. but if its not nuclear and the oil/gas is becoming to expensive that would really only leave coal. clean coal is only just becoming a possible but even that has problems and is not cheap.

that 40 million is a 40th of the size of VE well it even less but cant be bothered. so 40x40= 1.6 billion. so our vastly expensive turbines seem quite a reasonable investment at roughly 1 million a megawatt. plus no polution once its working.

All things considered I think I'd risk my money on a Nuke Station, and right on my own doorstep, rather than the whole VE debacle.

Preferably I'd have neither, but when it comes down an either/or decision, even in the light of current events in Japan, the Nuke still has the edge in my book.

The news said that tidal/wave power was still along way off being implemented to make a difference, with a sum of 30 billion required, will Shetland be a part of that?

I was listening to a New Zealand program and they are worried that folk need to get things done. Generally, I hear that from many world wide radio stations.

There are many more strong tidal flows along the west coast of Scotland, and the need for such a long interconnection will not be needed, also Orkney has some good flows too.

Is no one worried that Shetland may miss the boat??

The evidence that something is going on is around. The price of fuels are increasing and delivering them is increasing.

The cost of electricity will increase, burdening local Govs and folk who are within the low pay band.

In all, we all will pay, we are already being levied 15% for our luxuries.

they are 1megawatt each the farm is 400+.

Seeing as we are into the figures game , here is some more simple arithmetic :-

400 x 3.6 Mw wind turbines on a calm day. Output = 0 Mw

10x 1.0 MW tidal turbine on a calm day. Output = 10 Mw

It really is amazing how the pro VE lobby gets going as soon as there is some positive news about marine renewables..
