strangley the total plants peat disturbance has shot up and now they are planing to dig an hillside up to run their pipes. strangly sustanible have not made a sound.

 

Paul, Sustainable Shetland don't have infinite capacity to run more than one campaign. At present, as they have previously pointed out, they are concentrating on Viking Energy. However, nothing is stopping you and others of like mind from starting up a group.

But Viking Energy supporters won't complain about Total's operations, not when the windfarm would dig up a lot more peat than Total's million tons of peat.But then money is more important than enviroment

And if the windfarm is about cutting our carbon footprint, why was Wishart praising the gas plant on radio Shetland tonight? OH!, but of course, it's all about the money!! Hypocrites.

As I see it tidal is the only sensible way to go, and certainly the technology being developed and deployed at present certainly suffers from the negatives stated, which is why tidal developers need to think outside the box. So far they're at the point in evolution which equates to neanderthal man having discovered a round rock makes a wheel, and spends his days looking for more round rocks to make more wheels. When they get to the next stage, which was when neanderthal man and his wheels had the thought that if he could find a way to make the rocks he already had close at hand round, instead of wasting so much time and energy looking for already round ones, he could be more efficient and productive, then they'll be starting to get someplace with it.

^^ Na, his Heath Robinson machine may or may no work, but there's going to have to be a working prototype someplace before many believe it will, and even if it does, its still far from being free of drawbacks.

 

I was just sitting looking at a picture of this 10.8 mph rip that runs for 2.5 miles, if I'm remembering rightly http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YDeW6uBEz2o/Rt3PWwB_lzI/AAAAAAAABrE/TUn0_JtJTyg/s1600/070825IMG_2398b.jpg and appreciating the greatest obstacle to harnessing tidal is where nature has chosen to locate sources such as in the picture.

 

The current thinking behind how to harness the energy of such sources is the obstacle to making progress. When those designing the machines to harvest tidal energy throw away all their plans and thoughts for the boddam anchored and within stream suspended widgets they're currently playing with, and come back at the problem with open minds and a clean drawing board, they might just see what's staring them in the face if they'd think laterally and outside the box of current thinking. Its nothing that requires Greenheatman's array of "fancy" batteries or "stores" insultated by some mysterious high tech ultra efficient insulation and whatnot, it only requires some very bog basic long established and proven engineering practices.

 

I'm not a trained engineer of any description, and I don't have access to all of the data I'd like to have, to be able to say with any certainty that what I have in mind will definitely work and be economically viable, but I've yet to see why it wouldn't work.

 

Yes, I could come right out and say what it is....and if it could work, have some company lift it and go and make it their own. So, sorry, but no, I'm a bit mercenary like that, if it can work and nobody has thought of it before, I'm looking to get my retirement out of it.

Six Scottish windfarms were paid up to £300,000 to stop producing energy, it has emerged.

 

The turbines, at a range of sites across Scotland, were stopped because the grid network could not absorb all the energy they generated.

Details of the payments emerged following research by the Renewable Energy Foundation (REF).

 

The REF said energy companies were paid £900,000 to halt the turbines for several hours between 5 and 6 April.

I would think it would be national grid.

 

It would be fare cheaper to pay them than to shut down a power station I would imagine. Not just a case of pushing an off button and it would mean that the start up time would be too long when required above base level.

I'm all for renewable energy, but this project is just plain stupidity. I could go on to list the dozens of reasons why, but other people have already said them all previously.

On a side note, they're not windmills, they're windturbines..
