Shetland windfarm - Viking Energy

Quite right to think that, the overall picture may have been thought of in defence of such accusations, but we would not really know as individuals.

You need to get yourself some bats and great crested newts, they cause all sorts of problems here.

Are their any unbiased reports that are up to date, mind, who would pay for them?

Dynamiting rock to create 10 very large quarries will go down well with the local ornathology and not forgeting Mountain Hares, Stoats and Amphibians.

But who gives a turd, it's all about the money

how much rock has been blown up for total. how much metal has been smelted. how many otters have been disturbed.

Do obviously doesna bide wast ower!

but kevin when looking down on aith you can count 6 medium turbines around aith. are they not spoiling the unspoilt views over aith. lets not forget all the low flying wimbles they will mince.

My point was simply a response to the observation that not many natives were against the project. A hell of a lot Shetlanders oot wast are against it. That's all.

I've already made my arguments against and there's no point in going over it again.

And where are the 6 turbines in Aith (out of interest?) I can only think of 2.

PS - What's a wimble?

A Google search came up with this:

"Web definitions: auger: hand tool for boring holes" ??

Pretty views nor location has much to do with anything, everybody has their own take of why they are pro/anti VE, and there are as many pros and antis in the Ness as anywhere else, despite we needn't either see it or be bothered by it unless we choose to.

Me, I'm anti, principally because I'd see putting every penny I could raise on a three legged horse in the Grand National would be a better "dead cert" moneymaker than VE. VE is the product of two councils, neither of which when they came together seemed to possess the midder wit to tie their own shoelaces without tying them together or to someone elses, and have "lost" more of Shetland's money in hair brained pie in sky the brigs, boats and bankrupts, yet we're supposed to swallow unquestionably that they somehow have gotten their sums all correst first time this time, do I heck as like.

According to the prophet AT if we do not cut emissions right now then the planet is doomed, yet China, India and the rest of the third world are going to carry on increasing their emissions indefinitely. This being the case and if AT is right then we are all doomed any way so should we not spend the 200MILLION OR SO QUID WE HAVE LEFT ON A PISS UP TO END ALL PISS UPS, WOULD THAT NOT BE BETTER THAN PISSING IT IN THE WIND.

^^^What about spending 200MILLION OR SO QUID on whatever international political initiatives there are to lobby for or promote low carbon or no carbon energy production worldwide. Since it is that important, how about all profits from such a windfarm used for the same... local service dwindle into insignificance by comparison.

Just out of interest I was looking at some whimbrel stuff. Currently and without VE the whimbrel population is expected to continue to decline, but the decline is likely to reduce as whimbrel retreat to more suitable areas not taken by their competitor the bonxie (VE ES Addendum Chapter A11 Ornithology page 122), so the threat on the species is more complex than simply retreat due to climate changes. Crow predation on nest sites also seems to be a significant issue, hence "crow control" measure in the HMP (does that mean shooting them?).

This map shows lots of whimbrel hotspots very close if not within the turbine clusters. I guess that is considered ok in that whimbrel occupy lower gound and turbines are on the tops of hills, but it's a striking overlap when you look at the map. I guess SNH wanted removal of turbines to minimise the risk of collision when the whimbrel move in and out of more central hotspots... sounds reasonable.

Viking Energy consider the whimbrel to be one of the three highest priority species influencing layout, implying that they consider their actions highly significant when it come to breeding success/ collision etc. If Viking energy goes ahead, they suggest their HMP and mitigation measures will effect a potential population recovery. I guess if the windfarm is built, the success and recovery of the whimbrel becomes the responsibility of Viking Energy (not to mention the red-throated diver and merlin. There were about 10 important species on the site all together). Given their responses about public opinion and health impact etc., lets hope that the HMP is a little less hollow.

a nihilistic point of view. Yes, windmills are trivial compared to China. Getting carbon capture to work (if it can be made to work) is numerous times more important.

Then again windfarms annoy the hell out of NIMBYS and are worth doing for that reason alone.

There's a couple of windfarms in planning and preplanning coming on either side of my hovel. Usual objectors shouting their heads about it. To whom I am grateful as thanks to their leaflet I know about this, and can write letters of support.

@ Ched. Because 200 mil is a mere drop in the ocean when it comes to international campaigns and will make no difference whatsoever to the Chinese or the Indians, there are a few third world dictators who would gladly take it of your hands promise carbon cuts then use it to slaughter half their population. presumably cutting their carbon footprint at the same time.

It is a simple fact that global warming is just a scam to relieve the likes of you and me of even more money to keep us permanently in debt and beholding to a rich few.

REMEMBER AL GORE IS GOD AND AT IS HIS PROPHET.

so lets look at big Al a little closer.

Has he bought up vast tracks of rain forest to sell as carbon credit to big business so they can carry on as before producing the same amount of CO2/kg of goods produced. with the promise that the rain forest won't be chopped down? Answer YES

But how is he preventing it from being chopped down? Answer HE'S NOT.

This was an idea sold to the us as a way to save rain forest for indigenous peoples with the added benefit of saving the planet. IT'S NOT

What it really is is a way to make Al Gore a billionaire which IT HAS.

Now has he used all this money to make the lives of the folks living in the rain forest or any where else that matter one bit better? Answer NO

Does he use it to power his mansion with lights that burn 24/7 and fly round the world in a private jet? Answer YES

Not a very benevolent god this one.

The whole sorry mess is nothing more than smoke and mirrors that the gullible swallow hook line and sinker and all of us that pay taxes (so not you AT) pay for.

And now the SIC/CT with its great track record of investing in business has jumped in feet first spending our money with the only guarantee being that certain landowners (we all know who they are) will receive payments for the next 25 years even if it all goes tits up.

Yes the sic are one of the land owners but lets face it the promised payment to the SIC is a fraction of the money in the CT pot. This stinks just like the JUDANE and OILTOOLS and SSG farces, only this time there will be nothing left at the end of the day, no money for old folks care homes, or music lessons or mareel or the sports centres or anything else for that matter.

There is only one thing that is guaranteed and that is Shetland power use will drop dramatically because the last one to leave will surely turn of the lights

So you are supporting the spending of Shetlands money to support Salmond's scoty dream for no other reason than it get the backs up of the nimby's or is it just you cant bring yourself to disagree with Salmond.

whatever way it is sad indeed

@Dratsy. I wasn't being serious when suggesting international campaigns. It's certainly unrealistic to expect an impact on global carbon emission when considering the likes of China and India. Big businesses, capitalist economies and those who jump on to bandwagons (subsidies) only care about one thing.

Globally, "The International Energy Agency (IEA, 2007) estimates that by 2030, electricity production will account for over 17,000 MtCO2"

"...global wind energy capacity could stand at more than 1,000 GW by the end of 2020, producing 2,500,000 TWh annually. As a result, as much as 1,500 MtCO2 could be saved every year."

These dates are a decade apart, but on these figures wind would contribute an 8.8% reduction in CO2.

8.8% reduction is edging on futile, particularly if there is a real crisis point approaching in the not so distant future, and 100% is needed.

It's an issue we should ignore when expressing our views on Viking Energy because, real or not, it is outside our control and theirs?

Well if the windmills had been a no no! That fool (200MILLION!)

Mr.Wishart would have conned the charitable trust money

For some other supposed money making scheme.

(Just to father his own bank balance0

The Shetland public will always be at the bottom of the pile.

I am just surprised he has not done something with the council pension fund

Like Gordon Brown did as chancellor and Robert Maxwell did with the Sun

Given all the other nonsense Shetland has spent it's money on, windmills are one of the better ideas. Although Ghostriders point about local authorities being off the scale of incompetence is taken.

What does Salmond have to do with Viking Energy? answer - absolutely nothing. Is developing renewable energy in a peak oil environment a good idea? absolutely

If we recall VE originated in Shetland, by Shetland and for Shetland.
