mmm im miss reading something here i thought Shetland Aero generators Ltd owned them but it turns out some italian company does.

 

if this is correct how did Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd get a loan from the trust in the past.

Could it be that they (certain Directors) are raising capital for VE project perhaps? When did they sell out to Falck Renewables? TBH, haven't really paid attention to Burradale.

 

I had a look on the Companies House website. It would appear that the Shetland Aerogenerators Annual Return should be filed about now. That will give some answers about share ownership.

I am a bit confused confused about reliability theory - although I agree that the probability of breakdowns will increase with an increasing number of components, is there not a trade-off with redundancy? For example, if one turbine at burradale shuts down, they have lost 20%, but if it is only one turbine out of 100, that is just 1%?

 

Yes that is true if only one turbine were to fail in each windfarm. But because the probability of failure increases with the number of components it is likely that for every failure at Burradale there will be a great deal more in the larger windfarm, if everything else is equal. The problem is exacerbated when you introduce critical components like the interconnector or convertor station, a complex machine by itself, any failure of one of those items will very quickly reduce the capacity factor of the Viking windfarm towards 0%. It is fallacy to claim that because Burradale achieves a capacity factor of around 50% Viking will do the same. It won’t.

 

But everything else isn't equal. The VE turbines will be larger and less complicated, newer designs. Personnally, I think the VE windfarm will be at least as good, if not better than the Burradale one.

 

But there's no point arguing about it. We'll find out once it's built.

Newer is not necessarily always better, check out the bathtub curve. I hope you are proved right about it's perfomance but I don't think you will be.

 

But there's no point arguing about it. We'll find out once it's built.

 

That is true, neither of us can predict exactly how it will perform, nobody can at this stage, not even SSE, they can only make best case approximation. Even once it is built, it will not be possible to catagorically predict how it will continue to perform in the future.
