As you may or may not know,the SIC is a member of NFLA ,(Nuclear Free Local Authorities).

Policy wm sp7.....The council will oppose any nuclear development, wherever located, that threatens Shetlands enviroment and the employment that depends upon it.

To protect, sustain and ensure Shetlands natural resources and cultural heritage for future generations to enjoy and ensure that new development contributes to enviromental quality.

 

So why have they employed Weber Shandwick PR company who have been working with British Nuclear fuels since 2004 as "spin Doctors" on behalf of said company to promote Weber Shandwicks pro nuclear stance????

 

So much for them being a Neutral PR company

I wonder if the International Mire Conservation Group have any interest in the VE proposal. They were very interested in the plans for Lewis and may have been instrumental in the campaign that halted the plans there.

Right, Njugle, but over there they had the great advantage that much of the area chosen was a designated Ramsar site and SPA. That, too, made it much easier to organize some sort of international "protest" and to spread the information on the continent so that visiting tourists could react by signing special petitions etc etc

What would it take for them to withdrawal from the NFLA ?

 

Does their stand also effect those interested in personal ameatur science involving nuclear aspects ? (Say fusion for example..)

^^^^^^^Politics in Shetland is unlike anywhere else in the UK, it's called having 2 faces, one is pulling the wool over peoples eyes, and the other is throwing away any scrap of morality for DA MONEY.

I personally think its about time that a full public referendum was called on the wind farm proposal, before any more money is potentially wasted.

I suspect that we will not get this referendum because vested interests are afraid that they will not get the answers they want.

I should make it clear that I am not against wind power quite the reverse, its just the present proposal I have issues with. There are substantial areas in Shetland where a significant number of turbines could be sited without anything like the visual impact that the current proposal has.

Last week we found out that Viking Energy have appointed a PR company and this week there is a front page article in the Shetland Times saying that we are now getting a new oil/biofuel power station.

 

Is this just coincidence or is it the start of a deliberate distracting and misleading PR campaign?

 

Is all this confirmation that there will be no redundancy built into the sub-sea cable and regardless of whether it snaps or not, no wind generated power will be diverted to the Shetland grid and that all local power will still be expensively provided from the burning of bio/fossil fuels?

 

How will this affect the carbon budget for the VE/SSE partnership.

Last week we found out that Viking Energy have appointed a PR company and this week there is a front page article in the Shetland Times saying that we are now getting a new oil/biofuel power station.

 

 

It's not uncommon for such things to be suddenly offered when renewables come rumbling up your road. Developers get tied up in planning hell with these things for years so it's getting to the stage now that basic bribery is making some objectors change their opinions. There is one farm proposed for Laurencekirk and it has been in planning hell for almost 5 years.

 

We're putting a dozen turbines up at the moment and all kinds of local projects suddenly got assistance to make objections from local residents go away, one minute I'm getting threatened by a farmer to "get orf my laaaand" then the next week he is driving by in a brand new Land Rover and waving at me. Money talks and morals walk.

Well in this case it can't be bribery then, I mean what sort of bribe is a power station. So, if it's not coincidence, it has got to be deliberate distraction. I mean, get everyone fired up about a new power plant and they might forget about the windfarm for a while. You simply can't trust anything you read can you?

Totally daft looking at a new smokey, especially one that might have "Bio Fuels" The council must look into power from Sullom Voe for all Shetlands needs, the capacity is there, this would give time for micro generation schemes and eco friendly housing to be developed.

And all the energy wasting offices and buildings in Shetland, brought up to date with energy saving technology, and i don't mean light bulbs!

And no need to lay waste our precious carbon sink hills.

Just another thought, seeing that we don't here from VE anymore, i wonder how long it will be before we here from Weber-(we love turbines and nuclear) Shandwick??
