Any woman whose life is made perfect or destroyed by whether or not they're a part of the annual LUHA piss up, needs to get a life.

 

The mentality of any female wanting to be part of this event that allegedly hates them so much is a mystery to me, unless they're a hard core masochist.

 

While I appreciate that LUHA is a very big deal to a minority of toonies and a few more, and that's okay as its their privilegei. But the flip side is its a significant embarrassment to many other Shetlanders, who'd be more than delighted to see it cancelled immediately. But theres less chance of that happening anytime soon than there is a chance of there being a female Jarl at its head.

 

We don't all get what we want or what we'd like. LUHA, is LUHA, You can either embrace it, or you can ignore it, but you won't change it. It'll evolve (or not) when its ready and as it sees fit.

AFAIK, there is nothing written that states "females cannot take part" and, as for being "allowed" to take part, one way or another, you have to be "invited" into a squad and no one, male or female, can join a squad as a "right". 

 

The above is true of ALL the local fire festivals (including the one that does not (presently) allow female participants to be Jarls)

 

You seem to be suggesting that ANYONE should be able to join any squad that they wish to just so they can "take part".  Good luck with that one....

 

Sorry, but I have little sympathy for "resentment" built from a sense of "entitlement" and, I do not think that "instant gratification" brought about by some kind of rule change is the answer

To obtain true equality the concept of gender is being abolished therefore anyone can be anything.

We still have far to go since in Canada for example a “woman” still cant have her balls waxed as we saw in the Jessica Yaniv case!

You have a point, but I don't think its as simple as you portray it.

 

Firstly define 'join in the festivities'. It is correct that females do not currently or ever have previously participated in squads, the procession, burning etc, and while to some that no doubt constitutes the whole of the 'festivities', for many more that is just the tip of the iceberg of the 'festivities' - a minor public display which 'legitamises' the all night multiple partys and associated foolery which to them are the real 'festivities' and in which women not only participate, but significantly dominate. Without host(esses) and their helpers predominantly female) and their invited guests (again predominantly female) the all night shenanigans would be a pretty damp squib, if they existed at all.

 

Surely 'letting women take part in LUHA' is a bit of a misnomer and a false debate, as they already do take part, just as they have from Day #1 of the tar barrels. The real debate here surely should be about whether or not it is still acceptable in 2020 for LUHA to continue to follow their longstanding gender aligned participation roles, which were arguably originally established on circumstance and necessity rather than any prejudice.

 

A few folk (usually male - as lets face it, few females are mad enough to go out on a crappy winter night and drag a burning trolley behind them) get hold of a tar barrel, light it and tow it along behind them for light as they visit their acquaintances around the town, where the householder acted as host for them and any other guests present - move ahead 200 year, and they're still at it, its just been made a bit 'prettier' and given a thin veneer of faux 'respectability'.

The answer is in the title, that somehow Lerwick, our little market town,  is being misrepresented as Shetland.

It assumes that only LUHA is worthy, and that is patently not true. (Country yokels are only allowed to take part in LUHA under sufferance!).

However there would be room for another festival, say midsummer, where people could organize their own party(ies).

Meanwhile country girls can gleefully attend their own Up Helly Aa's, so please don't demean their efforts.

But that would be a lot of work and would need time for it to build up a reputation etc,

It would be much easier to arbitrarily mandate an existing festival has to have 25% - 50% female representation
