Shetland one of the top 5 to grow up as a girl.... Not if you would like to be part of Lerwick Up Helly Aa.

Any woman whose life is made perfect or destroyed by whether or not they're a part of the annual LUHA piss up, needs to get a life.

The mentality of any female wanting to be part of this event that allegedly hates them so much is a mystery to me, unless they're a hard core masochist.

While I appreciate that LUHA is a very big deal to a minority of toonies and a few more, and that's okay as its their privilegei. But the flip side is its a significant embarrassment to many other Shetlanders, who'd be more than delighted to see it cancelled immediately. But theres less chance of that happening anytime soon than there is a chance of there being a female Jarl at its head.

We don't all get what we want or what we'd like. LUHA, is LUHA, You can either embrace it, or you can ignore it, but you won't change it. It'll evolve (or not) when its ready and as it sees fit.

AFAIK, there is nothing written that states "females cannot take part" and, as for being "allowed" to take part, one way or another, you have to be "invited" into a squad and no one, male or female, can join a squad as a "right".

The above is true of ALL the local fire festivals (including the one that does not (presently) allow female participants to be Jarls)

You seem to be suggesting that ANYONE should be able to join any squad that they wish to just so they can "take part".  Good luck with that one....

Sorry, but I have little sympathy for "resentment" built from a sense of "entitlement" and, I do not think that "instant gratification" brought about by some kind of rule change is the answer

IMHO, the situation does NOT need "addressing" at all and, as GR suggested, those that wish to worry about LUHA should get themselves a "life" or, at least, worry about other more important things.

Women participating in an event is a moot point,
To obtain true equality the concept of gender is being abolished therefore anyone can be anything.

We still have far to go since in Canada for example a “woman” still cant have her balls waxed as we saw in the Jessica Yaniv case!
But the Olympics are showing a beautiful trend of Trans-inclusively!

Complete guide to infiltration of
Step 1
File the paperwork to be legally recognized as a male to obtain updated birth certificates etc.
Step 2
Move to another town disguise self as a male and be convincing
Step 3
Seduce and marry a nice girl insist on having the lights off and consummate it convincingly with a prosthesis
Step 4
Find a way to get her pregnant and believe it was from you possibly obtaining sperm from an affair who also believes you are a male move to a nice house near a good job.
Step 5
Once you and your wife have 3 kids make that dream move back to Lerwick
Step 6
Gradually get more and more involved in Lerwick Up Helly Aa to the point of it destroying your marriage leaving you divorced and unable to see your kids.
Step 7
Remove disguise and get plastic surgery to look like your wife
Step 8
Have your ex wife kidnapped and have yourself “returned” when the ransom is payed because I will be dammed if you let her raise the kids of some guy who was tricked into a straight relationship
Step 9
Put disguise back on
Step 10
Mission accomplished

Its not about taking part, its about not being allowed to take part.

for what its worth I have no desire to partake of the festival, but I resent not being allowed to join in the festivities if I so desired simply because I am female.

This is what needs addressing.

You have a point, but I don't think its as simple as you portray it.

Firstly define 'join in the festivities'. It is correct that females do not currently or ever have previously participated in squads, the procession, burning etc, and while to some that no doubt constitutes the whole of the 'festivities', for many more that is just the tip of the iceberg of the 'festivities' - a minor public display which 'legitamises' the all night multiple partys and associated foolery which to them are the real 'festivities' and in which women not only participate, but significantly dominate. Without host(esses) and their helpers predominantly female) and their invited guests (again predominantly female) the all night shenanigans would be a pretty damp squib, if they existed at all.

Surely 'letting women take part in LUHA' is a bit of a misnomer and a false debate, as they already do take part, just as they have from Day #1 of the tar barrels. The real debate here surely should be about whether or not it is still acceptable in 2020 for LUHA to continue to follow their longstanding gender aligned participation roles, which were arguably originally established on circumstance and necessity rather than any prejudice.

A few folk (usually male - as lets face it, few females are mad enough to go out on a crappy winter night and drag a burning trolley behind them) get hold of a tar barrel, light it and tow it along behind them for light as they visit their acquaintances around the town, where the householder acted as host for them and any other guests present - move ahead 200 year, and they're still at it, its just been made a bit 'prettier' and given a thin veneer of faux 'respectability'.

The answer is in the title, that somehow Lerwick, our little market town,  is being misrepresented as Shetland.

It assumes that only LUHA is worthy, and that is patently not true. (Country yokels are only allowed to take part in LUHA under sufferance!).

However there would be room for another festival, say midsummer, where people could organize their own party(ies).

Meanwhile country girls can gleefully attend their own Up Helly Aa's, so please don't demean their efforts.

The article witters on about all sorts of stuff, but ignores the elephant in the room... there is no place for girls or women in Up Helly Aa.. just about says it all for the female of the species in Shetland.

https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2020/01/23/isles-in-top-five-places-to-grow-up-as-a-girl/

I towt dis wis an ironic post, but apparently no.

The "stuff" da article "witters on about" is "child poverty, life expectancy, educational attainment, child obesity, teenage conception rates and ‘not in education, employment or training’ status." Surely dat's aa o mair significance dan whether women can be in a Lerrick Up Helly Aa squad or no

But that would be a lot of work and would need time for it to build up a reputation etc,

It would be much easier to arbitrarily mandate an existing festival has to have 25% - 50% female representation

In Australia the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee did not have enough women so they shut it down for several months.

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/politics/gender-equality-push-risks-mine-safety/news-story/b98bf6267f1cb7bf4c0e6519971a150a

Queensland’s Mines Minister has been accused of putting gender equality ahead of miners’ safety, after revelations the government’s coalmining safety board did not meet for months because it did not have enough women members.

~

The board has not met since March and was forced to cancel its June meeting, as it tried to meet the Labor government’s target of having 50 per cent women on government boards by next year.

~

“It is so gobsmacking and unbelievable that the minister would put making sure there is 50 per cent representation of women on (the) safety committee above the safety of men and women in mines — it’s just unacceptable,” she told ABC radio.

“Tragically, we’ve had more and more deaths in mines, and something’s got to give.”

Things we want to know. Have the LUHA 'jokes committee' been warned off taking the proverbial of the critics of LUHA who want women taking a greater role on the night?

Had it been anyone or anything else in the toon getting the same treatment, I'm sure a little rhyme or ditty would have been forthcoming on thew bill...... but with this, nary a word.

C'mon boys, you're slipping up.

Fun fact Its the current year was a giant meme from 5 years ago

f7e.png

It would be nice if the UHA committee were proactive, and stopped being viewed as Dinosaurs, and  embraced the future. UHA is now live streamed around the world, do the UHA committee really want to come across as out of date old fogeys.

Things tend to go full circle after a while,
When the tide comes in it looks like the sea will cover the beach forever but eventually the tide pulls back to reveal the beach once more before the tide comes back.
Same thing with civilization and the phases it goes through are just what parts of the beach have been uncovered before the tide returns.

For example at the end of the Roman Empire women were pursuing political office until “Something happened” and then it suddenly didn’t matter to them anymore.

More than half of millennial women don’t identify as feminist, poll finds

Why so many young women don't call themselves feminist
Important quote
"The term feminist is less likely to appeal to working-class women, polls suggest."
Most left wing movements require VERY middle class people and as people in the UK are on average getting poorer by generation so the money is not there.
LGBTQ acceptance among young people is on the decline
Half of all British Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal
Millennial women overwhelmingly Cat lady spinsters

Did you know at the end of Rome there was a Tax on people not starting families?
Was called Aes uxorium and today we have tonnes of abstinence among young adult males as a result of the Sexual revolution across western civilization.
That “Revolution” came from the 1960s New Left and so does the “Gay pride” movement and most Feminism

Don't you think that it was a bit "petty" to put it there in the 1st place ?

Silly question really as you next two statements confirm your position.

Then go go on to indulge in a little "character assasination" just because a large number of people, apparently, do not think as you do.

LUHA is streamed around the world for anyone to see and attracts visitors from far and wide.  Why "wreck" a formula that is so successful ?

Just try and get your head around the fact that;

"the membership of squads is entirely up to the squads themselves" and has nothing to do with the LUHA committee.

Avail yourself of a few more FACTS and don't blame the LUHA Committee for your "outrage"

It has been pointed out (repeatedly) that there are 11 other Fire Festivals that all allow female guizers/squads and that 10 of the 11 also allow female Jarl Squads.  If it matters so much, wht not try and join one of the others ?

That kind of thing happens so often they have a name for it

Get Woke Go Broke is an expression typically used to express the sentiment that organizations who embrace political correctness or cave to demands of social justice activists will suffer financially as a result.

Entryism (also referred to as entrism or enterism, or as infiltration) is a political strategy in which an organisation or state encourages its members or supporters to join another, usually larger, organisation in an attempt to expand influence and expand their ideas and program. In situations where the organization being 'entered' is hostile to entrism, the entrists may engage in a degree of subterfuge and subversion to hide the fact that they are an organisation in their own right.

Because participation in the festival is not the objective!

take another example of "Inclusiveness" at work for an example

Firms urged to crack down on office football chat

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51261999

"Chat about football or cricket in the workplace should be curtailed"

- Chartered Management Institute has warned.

Why?

"It's a gateway to more laddish behaviour and - if it just goes unchecked - it's a signal of a more laddish culture,"

So its not about Sports is it?

Make no mistake Left wing activists are the foot soldiers of Banks, Corporate culture and the wider political establishment.

Promotion of HR/Corporate Culture is the goal in this case.
