Dear readers

I was sad day to here scasta Airport to close. It was good for oil Industry and jobs in area  north mainland, area  solution for that if put on market min charge for operator of Airport  without financial support from Local government. a lot British airport were sold small  price conditions keep them open under private operators  Shetland requires two airports By laws rules aviation  must be second airfield  in Shetland and why not scasta for passenger freights

This would once again open tourism as people can fly in areas directly and hotels be back working not closing, Sic do not need be afraid have operator competitor to sum burgh Airport as North Link-Cal mac are two state companies but compete on operations, So Local Administration do same

Local community Can take this airport at min charge get operator start keep it running this can be done  1-pound cost by a communities buy out, association can be formed and rent out to operator who will operate in completion sum burgh, plenty Aviation people support this project This been done all over UK on large airports so I recommend people north mainland look into this option To save scasta  historical airport save its future get jobs back North Mainland

There may be a commercial use for Scatsta, (I certainly hope so), but with the oil industry choosing to fly from Sumburgh and Aberdeen I can't for the life of me see any demand for extra passenger flights, if there was they would've put more flights on from Sumburgh.

Need to find some way to funnel the retirees who come to to islands escape the city into the areas with fewer jobs to keep them from competing for housing against those who are still working and trying to make ends meet, Plenty of amenities but you need to find a way to attract.

Should try and get some retirement properties built in places where the local businesses are in danger of having too few customers.

they could be made to order in some scenarios depending on what design is used.

Plenty of Amenities in Brae but here is the thing, it takes time to get there from the first ports of call and most tourists are going to be around for a week or 2 in any destination really, and ask how many people in the UK have even heard of it among those who can maybe name 1 or 2 places in Shetland.

Retirees are White Flighting out of thousands of cities and that's only going to accelerate after lifting of the lockdown.

When house prices balloon up again they are going to start selling their house in the city for half a million and start making offers again.

this happens allover the uk and is a disaster for those from "desirable" areas looking to move out of their parents house, get a larger house for kids, incoming workers and businesses who can now only get workers who live further and further away reducing talent-pool getting a mortgage is hard enough but they cant compete with cash.

Another thing to consider is better transport from the ferry terminal straight over and advertising thereof,

Why would/should toursists spend time in the North Mainland rather than the South and Lerwick because thats the idea you need to pitch

Folk are quick enough to come up with ideas about what should be done but as usual the expectation is that somebody else and/or the council should be funding them.

The hard truth is that any use that is found for it needs to be commercially viable. I just can’t see anything on the scale of what has kept it going for the last 40 odd years ticking that box. There just aren’t enough locals or visitors flying in and out and tourism is never going to grow to levels that make a second airport viable. Use of it by the much-lauded Space Centre might be one glimmer of hope but IMO there’s still a lot to be proven on that front before it will bring the economic benefits we keep hearing about.

Yes it’s devastating for the North Mainland but the boom was never going to last forever and we’re all going to have to plan for and get used to oil and gas playing a shrinking role in wir economy and way of life here.

Perhaps with the co-operation say with Iceland and Faroe ,Scatsta could be used as a "hub" for the transportation of fresh fish and shellfish .

Guess the costs to provide such a service would be to much and it would not be viable, but just a thought..

Passengers could still be an option,

Would need to find some way to make it commercially viable, The very large airplanes are cheaper per person but not when they have empty seats.

If you had a testing and quarantine area that allowed people to get the all clear and dodge the 2 week self isolation/quarantine and speedy deportation for anybody infected.

basically a hospital/hotel that could house 2 planes full of people for this testing.

people would be willing to pay extra if it meant they could use a larger portion of their holiday due to the testing being done.
