Watter
Went to buy the local paper today to see the price has jumped from £1.50 to £ 1.80 which is a whopping 20% increase despite inflation being at 1.5% currently . The SUN has also gone up from 55p to 60p which is a more modest 9% rise but again way above inflation . I decided not to buy any papers and got two scratch cards instead . My main point being how can they justifly such large price increases and are we seeing the death of the print industry . Incidentally i won £4 on one of the scratch cards so doubled my money . gafynandrew
shetlander
The times are like any other business - they have employees and other overheads that need paying and I suspect an increasing number of us ‘use’ the service they provide online without ever paying them a penny. It used to be the main, if not the only, way for folk to advertise locally and as (free) online alternatives started taking the place of that even before coronavirus I suspect they’ve seen a huge drop in advertising revenue in recent years. At the same time more folk are going online to read da paper, they’re losing revenue from paper sales, in turn that makes advertising less attractive for businesses - and it’s a downward spiral. I do still buy da times every week as a way of supporting what I get for free online as much as anything else and would be saddened if it was lost locally. Urabug
Tend to agree with you shetlander like most folk annoyed at the price increase but when did I last advertise in the Times, cannot remember, but have done a few times on this very web site. Things are changing and if you compare the Shetland Times today with a copy say 50years ago it is a very different paper and certainly not the lucrative business it used to be. I forgot about my internet times so thanks shetlander, now I feel a little less disappointed. Edited August 7, 2020 by Urabug
BigMouth
Print media as a whole has been in a death spiral for the last 10-15 years. It used to be.a well paid career in the past. People have wised up though and discovered online advertising to be more attractive with often almost instant results at considerably less or no cost. I have bought the Shetland Times once in the last ten years or more. At 32 pages then it was poor value. There are just better ways to consume news. tirvaluk
I agree with the above comment. A lot of people are also not happy with the standard of journalism recently, it as bad as The Sun in some cases. Not many young folk actually buy it now.
