  2. Oxjam Shetland’s Buskathon is back for another year! The third annual Buskathon will take place on Saturday 30th August, at various points along ‘Da Street’. For one day only, the team have recruited some buskers to brighten up the street with live music. We have both well-known musicians who fill up venues every weekend, to those who usually only perform in the comfort of their own home, occupying several 'busking stations', taking it in turns to show off Shetland's musical talent, and raising money for Oxfam while doing so. So take a wander along the street on Sat 30th, and show these amazing people some support! It’s all about raising money for a great cause, while promoting our local music scene and all it has to offer. If you fancy being more than just a passing spectator, there’s still plenty of time to volunteer for a little bit of busking yourself. Get in touch! Email oxjamshetland2014@gmail.com, or phone Ashlea Tulloch, Takeover Manager, on 07799281996. We’ve had everything from bagpipes to harps in the past – there’s a spot for everyone! If you’d like to find out more about Oxjam Shetland and our big annual Takeover on Sat 25th Oct, please search for us on facebook and check out our page. To find out more about volunteering opportunities with us, please get in touch via the contact information above. We’d love to hear from you. Local music, global impact.

Weeks, Peat? Try years! It is a scam as old as the internet itself. Gafynandrew - are you by any chance a BT internet customer? Everyone I know who is (or was!) has had these calls. My conclusion from that is that BT's customer database has been sold on to 3rd parties, most likely by BT's helpline staff themselves.

    School Closures

^ That is the point though, as I understand it. The removal of choice. As things have been, a pupil/parents had the choice of the AHS/Hostel or remaining in Skerries, depending whether city life and more subjects than you could shake a stick at, or being happy with whatever the isle offered was desired. Closing the isle option leaves all pupils compelled to take the AHS/Hostel route whatever they think of it. Choice is zero, even if the place is everything they hate, and they have no interest/aptitude for anything the AHS offers Skerries didn't, they have to stick it out for the distance regardless. I can appreciate a bad teacher and little choice harms some, but equal harm is done when someone is forced in to an urban environment that is entirely alien to everything they are and want to be, and are part of a faceless mass that leaves them feeling treated more like a yow in a cru at a hill caa than an individual. Choice is always good, but closing a place like Skerries in the name of "choice", when it is actually removing choice that already exists, and then playing the "social skills" and "opportunity" cards, smacks of folk in Hayfield and living on the Mainland telling Skerries folk "we know better whats good for you and your bairns than you do", and that's well out of order.
