Who Empties septic tanks in shetland?
Infiltrator replied to aidank's topic in Anything & Everything Else
As above, our experience is they either work or they don't. If they work, leave well alone. Ours is a fibreglass bulb type tank, we had terrible problems with the drains backing up when we first bought the house, but this was down to the pipe from the soakaway (yes I know.... but it's an accepted Aberdeenshire practice due to clay soil) being blocked. Once we'd sorted that we've had no problems. The chap who sorted our pipe is a neighbour who has a plant hire business, he fitted the same style of tank (bulb type) to his house built in 1964 and it's never ever been emptied. -

'people'? I must have missed this referendum, or was this a local poll on the Big Isle? For someone who promotes free thinking, you do seem to spend a lot of time being led by modern media and religous fables. -

I've bookmarked this thread in case I ever weaken and consider turning religous or get a yearning to visit Papa Stour -

Industrial gas turbines like the GE frame 5's at Sullom do not require a lot of maintenance, in relative terms they're very reliable as they have so few moving parts. There ate many places in the world where turbines like these are on remote locations and run for months without seeing any maintenance. Maybe if you'd turned up on more of the days you were supposed to be working on them you'd have learnt a bit more about them

...did I say that? Maybe you did, no one that's read your original post is quite sure what you were saying. And now rather than clarifying your original post you've headed off on some crusade about Shetlands drinking culture? Your original post suggested to me that either everyone, or at least some folk, involved in UHA has the ability to solve Shetlands impending financial crisis and that UHA is distracting them from this work - please tell us more, who are these people? A bit like Nero playing the fiddle while Rome burned I guess? Personally I believe the key lies with a group of folk who need to get their heads out of the sand and make some very important, but unpopular key decisions - I don't believe UHA plays any part in this, unless you know otherwise? So, no more riddles or thread drift, please clarify your original post and explain what UHA has to do with the local financial crisis.

So you're suggesting we cancel up helly aa and instead have a sober day debating how to solve Shetlands financial problems? Maybe you should attend the mass meeting and put it forward as a proposal....

Silver Fox Farm at Tingwall - More info?
Infiltrator replied to Lerwick antiques's topic in History & Culture
I can still remember the remains of the mink farm at Wormadale -
No, but it did do a touch and go in Aberdeen. It was only supposed to do a fly past, but apparently the flight crew had some friends at Aberdeen and arranged the touch and go on the QT. The video was on youtube some time ago. Nimrods used to practice approaches into Sumburgh, don't believe any ever landed though?

Good pics again stilldellin, the rough sea in the background adds some real depth to the pictures.

There's a lot of talk on this thread about 'Tesco' , the faceless corporate juggernaut. But I think it's worth remembering that the success of this whole operation is probably thanks to a few local staff who came up with the idea and managed to get approval at such short notice. And not forgetting the local staff now working the extra hours to get all this stuff on the shelves.

Am sorry but have you missed the fact that the WEATHER is preventing the ferries sailing? I was referring to Serco's performance since they took over (fare hike, crew redundancies, strike, etc), not tonights weather.

Regardless whether it's a PR stunt or not, well done to Tesco for their initiative, this'll make a big difference to many folks Christmas breaks. Tesco seem more committed to a lifeline service than Serco - maybe Tesco should run the ferries

I know which one I'd prefer to be sat onboard... Pics impressive as always - what's the camera again?

^things like this need to be looked at, but given the mess the finances are in at the moment, I doubt if this even represents the dust on the snow on the tip of the iceberg.

Funny how folk read things. I wasn't referring to "immigrants" as (most) of them are very willing to work and contribute quite a lot to Shetland. I was referring to the UK Nationals who turn up here looking for an easy ride.. Perhaps I should have been more specific. LOL, maybe I should have been more specific, by immigrants I was referring to UK nationals not of island origin - maybe there's a better term for the folk you were referring to - welfare surfers maybe? as a p.s. to support your claim - a number of years ago there was a person of no fixed abode arrested for breaking into the salvation army building on the north road, he'd recently arrived from London and in his pocket were instructions of how to get welfare help to get to lerwick and then the folk in the social work to contact to get housing etc. This info was being passed around the homeless folk in London.

Bridges, windmills, tunnels, lack of Chief exec, various scandals, numerous education reviews, AHS U turn - to name a few of the distractions they've poured cash into in the last 10 years.
-
Careful Colin, the countryfolks are already up in arms thinking the toonies are getting all the money, if they then find out some of it's being handed out to immigrants (polite term for your 3 R's) there'll be riots - that is as long as the roads have been gritted

I've done this for years now, full set of snow tyres on spare wheels go in during the Oct hols off again in the Apr hols. Wheels and snow tyres bought second hand cheaply in the middle of summer and have lasted years.

About time people started taking responsibility for their own safety and actions. There were warnings everywhere from Thurs afternoon onwards, drive according to conditions, if conditions are too bad don't travel. Have to question the school bus and taxi with schoolbairns - in Aberdeenshire the school transport won't run if conditions are too bad, I'm sure I read somewhere it's something to do with their insurance. The last time I remember similar road conditions in Shetland was 1984 or thereabouts, took us nearly 3 hours from Lerwick to Sullom, and you couldn't even stand on the road at tingwall straights let alone drive - the two Bolts buses headed for Sullom slid into each other in a slow motion crash at Girlsta

I remember seeing some figures a few years ago about how much each vehicle and passenger is subsidised on each of the ferry services, Bressay as you say, was the only service that didn't need to be subsidised - although this was probably nearly 10 years ago now. Anyone seen more recent figures?
