I have used an otter board a couple of times years ago but I wouldn't now. It's too greedy and I prefer sitting fishing rather than running up and down the shore!

In the light of the recent news about the 6 men who are seriously ill after taking part in a drugs test does this show that we need to test more on animals or less? Given that these drugs had been extensively tested on animals.

has anybody read two calfs in the house, the journal of John Lewis the methodist missonary to Shetland in the 1820's. It is a bit repetitive but there are some interesting bits about life in Shetland at the time.

You can be sure that like all the trapings of capitalism it was built on the misery of the poor and down trodden.

we are nodic like most of the rest of northern and eastern britain it's just the feeling is stronger and more recent for us in Shetland even more so than in Orkney. We owe most of our cultural heritage to north sea trading routes which obviously encompass scandinavia to a large extent.

Yes too many premature babies are kept alive with modern medical techniques with terrible consiquences for the child and their family. The family are never asked if they want their childs life prolonged artificially but then often have to decide if treatment should be withdrawn to allow their baby to die. What a position to be in.

Which political party do you support?
turrifield replied to JAStewart's topic in National & International News
I vote green they are the only party looking to the future with open eyes and they are not lying to us about what we can expect in the future. Also they are the only party who wants to reduce air travel. Unlike Labour who say they are commited to environmental protection but expand airports and build new roads. Hipocrates -
The energy debate - Nuclear vs renewable
turrifield replied to admin's topic in National & International News
Renewable energy is the way forward and generators can be made with out using fossil fuels but are generally made using fossil fuels at the moment. -

The energy debate - Nuclear vs renewable
turrifield replied to admin's topic in National & International News
yes solar panels are made using oil the blades of many wind turbines are made from oil. Also the concrete used in the errection of renewable generators uses alot of energy. I am very much in favour of renewable energy but I think my point is often over looked. The amount of fossil fuels used in the production of nuclear energy is considerable. First the urainium is mined the transported long distances then after use it is transported as waste fuel and dumped in concrete bunkers. Then there is the construction of the power station and it's power distrubution network. The idea the nuclear is a carbon neutral fuel is false. -
Is crofting a viable enterprise for the future or is it just a hobbie or another form of welfare benefits due to the subsidies? What do people think about the croft reform bill due to go before MSPs (when they get the roof fixed). Are crofters sheep fixated land grabing greedy so and so's or are they just doing it because nobody else wants to?

The energy debate - Nuclear vs renewable
turrifield replied to admin's topic in National & International News
both nuclear and renewable energy sources depend on oil so when the oil runs out neither will be viable. We will have to develope a society that depends on local resourses for survival. -
I would like to know peoples views. I heard this morning that another case is going through the courts were doctors want to remove life support but the parents of the 14 month old boy don't agree. What should be done in this situation? Should it be down to the doctcrs, the relatives, the courts or some other body? Have you had any first hand expirience of this dilemma?
