  1. i have to admit they were pretty decent wi me a couple o years ago. i usually avoid the tooth doctor as much as possible but after a couple of years of back and fore pain i finally had to try. i'm no registered (still) and have never been since leaving school even in auld reekie, but managed to get an emergency appointment at montfield (only had to wait a couple of days) then thay hauled ein o my wisdom teeth oot due to an absess, had me back for a check up and all. so it's no a case of 'mo money' if it's serious you will get help. i'm juist stupid for not going sooner and putting up wi the pain, if you drink enoch you aye forget about it onywye
  2. 20p is peanuts for the expense of ammo and physical time it takes to have an effective cull, hiring professionals to do the job would be much more proactive when you take into account owners of neighbouring land who may or may not try to solve the problem. Last time i decided something needed to be done i managed to get around 40 o the little beggars of a night (around 5 hours) but it hardly made a dent and i didn't have the time or money to keep doing it. (i'm also not that great a shot) only a part-time crofter mind you. and ghostrider is quite correct that this isn't the time of year to be doing it, lamping wi the longer nights of winter is the way to go, besides consideration for lambing. huvna had rabbit stew since afore maxi so i canna mind whit they taste like, dunna think it's worth the effort though, they Eastern folk must be having a right laugh about this
  3. i like "spake" would yun be spokit, speakit, spakit or none o the above in sheltie? i dunna ken, juist like 'sp' words name: Nicko McBrain (listenin to maiden as i type )
  4. wha's to say it winna pay dividends in the future? whilst i would be concerned about our own culture being watered down, i don't honestly believe this will happen, it can only become more enriched. i say the more the merrier, if folk are willing to come to this country and make something of their lives, good on them. we need immigrants as much as they need us (if not more) and while it would be seemingly prudent to control the influx, (you're only getting in if you can prove you will be an asset) it stands against my beliefs/will and therefor i can't condone ANYTHING the BNP stand for, but they don't concern me one jot, there will always be folk who canna make up their own minds and can be swayed by scare tactics, but i'm sure the majority can see enough sense not to let 'them' have a meaningful say. mind you i am consistently surprised by election results (or not) where people seem to be happy to vote for a government that purports to be one thing but is indeed the other, the price we pay for the majority of folk living in comfort i suppose. (not aimed at you by the way styles, juist stating my view)
  5. the FAMOUS Ab-er-deen! tocht there'd be mair sheep on these boards mind, Shetland must be getting brawly multi-cultural

  7. I'm not sure about the length of sentence, seems to be the minimum to me, and like has been said, it'll be less than that in reality. I'm positive some form of community service would have been a more beneficial action for all concerned, the boy would be forced to live up to the embarrassment and contribute to the community he put at risk, punishment enough for a lapse in character that many people follow in the isles, he won't be trusted to work in that capacity again (unless he moves to bohemia or something) Doubtless he knows the error of his ways and a prison sentence won't make him face up to it any more than community service. Still, you do the crime you do the time, maybe it's more of a move to show aabody else they winna 'get off lightly' onymair?
  8. on the architecture thing, many valid points. i'm no academic but i'm pretty sure there has been no history of (decoratively) coloured buildings in Shetland, though it would be nice to start (i quite like the new hjaltland housing stuff, being relatively inoffensive for what it is) perhaps the "dour" thing is more to do wi our more recent past (connections with sooth) beyond necessity, but nevertheless it is tradition of a sort. the first impression of arrival has always been scunnered, and while i've never liked the shetland hotel as a piece of architecture, it is not the worst, personally i am more offended by the terminal, which looks like a train has crashed into the side of an agricultural shed that just happens to have a 'trendy' curved roof, offended as it is a new build but may as well be any 1 of its neighbours. anyway, enough o yun... Orkney has it licked for tourism, even more so over us when we are in competition for the majority of 'selling' points. Historic Scotland has a huge presence in comparison, notably from the skara brae centre but also from the general expansion throughout the islands of archeological sites which just hasn't happened here (perhaps a bonus, wealth of unexplored territory and all that) arriving is a pleasure in orkney with their brand new, small scale airport that hits you with explorative possibilities, and 3 alternatives by sea, the diving culture is prolific as are the wealth of tea shops/cafes. and blah blah blah... basically i think shetland should be wary of this and move beyond what our dear neighbours provide, in all seriousness i love njugle's suggestion of expanding the potential of 'extreme' sports. it's not all that expensive for the budget traveller to get here, (although more can be done to keep it inexpensive when they do arrive, if it is affordable correct me) and we should make people aware of the fact as it isn't obvious. making the local culture more accessable is a must, we may be able to cope with small numbers at a local hall of a summers evening but there's no chance if we are to get the numbers of folk we presumably want to visit. i'm not even going to get started on customer service levels, i dare say folk may be more considerate to presumed sooth moothers, but no being one i've barely noticed any effort for premium prices (messr's Jamieson & Leslie excluded). as for anyone else, i think the idea of "expanding tourism = tying us over for the future" is naive at best without everybody making an effort, it only takes one to spoil it. onywye, apologies for the length, i'd write mair but i canna type and this has taken forever
  9. this week i have been mostly listening to Brain Police, Electric Fungus, particularly El Capitan (Raspberry Jam), Beefheart and Mushcream Caravan. An Icelandic band described as exponents of "stoner rock" whitever yun means, all i ken is it makes my feet tap and heid 'bang'
  10. reeks to me, quit throwing money away. besides, should we not be in a position to demand regular visits from 'the white whale'? i'm all in favour of expanding to mainland Scotland but would like to see proof this would help, by-passing Shetland shouldn't be an option. i've been on the boat and couldn't really find much to recommend a cruise (although it was probably off season) most folk stayed in their rooms, the duty-free was closed all of the next days steaming, leaving the cafe or bars as the only options to spend time, general clutter was everywhere (including spew fae the night afore) with not much attempt to clean. doubt if anyone getting off at Shetland would have been too impressed either, back of midnight in a gale, nothing doing. reshuffling sailing schedules with more emphasis on 'cruise' would be the way to go for increasing passengers, rather than effectively saying sod them wir making money from freight, there just seemed to be too much of a budget/package feel to the experience to enjoy it, even though i was only travelling A-B P.S. it would be a shame to lose an increased Scandinavian presence, but are we shareholders or mugs?
  11. jesus took a while to wade through yun, cheers for that peeriebryan, interesting reading
  12. aye, dinna see whit the fuss is about, onywan ken wha i am? didna think so, even if you hae an inkling i'm nae bothered, only a sporadic poster onywye :tmbup;
  13. skill shortage job seekers allowance early retirement (back on the payroll) council bigwig? just rating it to wha's mair likely to be postin wi the time on hands, and yes i have a 'skills' shortage at the minute
  14. Aarhus, Denmark til the summer, probably back to auld reekie for a bit after that. Whit does Ex-Pat mean exactly though? my allegiance is still with Shetland wharever i end up
  15. Moralles' winning design was specifically concerned with the Holyrood site, the main premise being as a metaphorical extension of Holyrood park, among others such as reflecting Scottish National identity. Various problems were encountered throughout, and were exasperated by Morrales' death. (mainly through MSP decision making before and after) bomb-proofing glazed corridor roofs, suddenly deciding on twice the car parking space underneath, latching on to "every piece should be different" even though in his previous works he was not adverse to repetition of elements etc... basically i agree with it shouldn't have been run by the suits, but we've still ended up with a superb piece of architecture, world reknowned, modern and 'iconic' as such a building should be whatever the cost, it's only money after all and at half the price of the millenium dome, i reckon we got a bargain
  16. Lib Dem's and all, i agree with most of the party line and Tavish is a stand up guy so it helps sway my decision, good of the constituency and all that. Would like to sympathise wi the Greens but being especially concerned with the environment is not enough, a Lib/Green coalition would be my preferred Gov't though
  17. haha... HAHAHA... HAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!! sorry, but tell me the last time that happened and i'll eat a copy of the tabloid of your choice with a side helping of sky news. seems it's a good time to be in the flag manufacture business... just where did all those danish flags come from? do islamic extremists keep a stock of flags on standby for such occasions? perhaps a helpful news team happened to have a few... extremists will always get the attention, it makes better telly and allows the govt. to steer the debate towards 'what measures must we take/civil liberties are you going to give up to deal with these dangerous people?' i even saw footage yesterday of a group of fanatics burning pictures of a boat after that ferry sank in the red sea... In denmark at the moment, trust me, there are plenty of flags. Supermarkets, Petrol Stations, Offices fly them outside every day, and you know when someones had a birthday or the fitba's been on cause there are hundreds of mini wans lying about the town, basically as patriotic as the yanks, just not as (religiously? perhaps) naaive on the whole, being extremely liberal whilst at the same time trying their damnest to be internationally conservative, which is why i can't help laughing at the whole thing. although i know i don't need to say, but i voted for don't know/don't care at the beginning of this thread, mainly because i don't think there is as much of an issue as is being made out, (latest religious 'world' war and all that) as usual in the modern press driven world as some of you have suggested. It's not strictly true that i 'don't know/care' however the thing that i'm concerned with more is the sensationalist drivel that is spewed out on a regular basis, just waiting for the next big headline to come out so i can laugh in it's face... which happens to be that the bird flu has hit Denmark and while i am positive its another mountain v. molehill, if i'm right it means needlessly more expensive chicken for me, if i'm wrong, nae muckle i can do about it onywye, except disinfect my wellys afore i come hame... i hope i haven't jinxed things too much by scoffing at it, sorry big man up there, dinnae strike me/wis doon ower hard
  18. (oops, sorry for length) From earlier in this thread, i don't agree with the idea of banning folk fae the cross, the problem would just migrate to other areas. Although i haven't been about in the toon for a while now, the same 'characters' have been ever present in causing trouble fae i started drinkin about the toon. I have been in more than my fair share of scrapes and can confirm that it doesn't stop at one encounter whatever the outcome, basically its an extension of bullying and as at school, punishment is far too lenient, often being a source of amusement among the thugs, 'cool' even. I agree that more support is needed to 'educate' they folk but when you're dealing with folk who just don't care, tougher punishment is required, perhaps from an earlier age. I'm sure it is difficult to apply national policies to small communities, but this is where we should get a bit creative in dealing with the anti-social element, folk need to be seen to be punished and be ridiculed for it to at least make them think twice afore doing something totally out of order and being sent down for it, causing further resentment and further problems.
  19. i mind a conversation i had once wi someone sooth who had been to Shetland, where he honestly believed Sibc was a pretty good local radio station, my drunken response was, load of s***e from what i remembered of it. mind you, while working last summer i did get fairly addicted to listening for comedy news report errors, which were repeated all day, daily it seemed. he does have a fairly decent playlist in comparison to sooth stations, just a pity its no what i like to listen to, DJ spots would possibly make it worth listenin to rather than relying on my ain CD's
