  1. For clarity you wanted a response and here it is. Just because I own the greenhouses doesn't mean it has ANYTHING to do with my shop business which BTW has supported this community for over 40 years and pumped back into the local economy many millions in salaries and services as well as assisting many local charities with both funds and raffle prizes. Threats of disrupting the business due to a separate personal issue can only lead to a domino effect. Islesat (as owners of a local business) should realise that I wouldn't stop using their business if he asked more for his house than I felt it was worth because I wanted to use it for a "community project". Have some sense people - this letter just reeks of cutting off your noses to spite your face. I originally purchased the greenhouse which had not been used for many years due to lack of commercial viabilty with the hope of building eco-friendly housing or even having the option of rebuilding a commercial building to house my furniture and floorcoverings departments if I wanted. David Adamsons have clearly stated that they had no other property to compare the value to and have come back with a figure a third of what I believe I can achieve if I continue down one of my original desired routes in the future. However as I was approached with a community project I was more than willing to just take what it has almost cost me taking into account interest, original price and other costs over the last 5 years. This is not as one commentator states "twice the asking price" and trust him to make it clear that despite having made this my home for over 45 years I'm "an incomer" so that's another reason for my "apparent greed". As Kavi says the figures of the project without even the purchase price were mind blowing and unfortunately I fear there could have been a swimming pools/mareel saga had it gone ahead anyway. Having said all this I can say that I am saddened that we could not reach a satisfactory resolution. Hope that some of you can now see things from both sides of the fence...
  2. Hi - does anyone know how good the roads are today - out to Tingwall at least where I was hoping to head ? Thanks Ghufar (***Mod Edit - Merged with existing thread***)
  3. Hi As a fairly novice gardener I was thinking of planting a varieties of potatoes in deep pots - I was thinking of using seed potatoes but perhaps someone can advice otherwise. Its just for my own domestic use. The discussion so far is pretty inconclusive... Ghufar
  4. I'm so glad I got a Prius having got rid of my 19yr old Lexus. Fuel prices have become scary. Even so I intend to start walking more but really feel sorry for those who can't due to distance/location.
  5. I'm looking to see how much interest there is, what size ppl are interested and what they would feel would be a reasonable rent. The current insurance would probably have to be upgraded but thats really secondary to the whole idea....
  6. Hi There I'm taking up a new hobby of vegetable and herb gardening and have decided to use the glasshouse to get me started. As the glasshouse is too large for me, I am considering setting up raised beds and renting out allotments in various sizes. If anyone is interested can they get back to me so that I can see how much space would be required. I am not intending to run this as a GREENHOUSE - just an allotment facility under glass with water supply only. Ghufar
  7. I don't know of any true religion that promotes violence and murder of the innocent. There are factions in every religion who stray from what their religion teaches, becoming extremists and fanatics, and if this is the case then they can no longer be considered a true follower of that religion. Admittedly the focus these days is currently on Islamic extremism. I'm no preacher and totally believe in "Live and Let Live" and that also means everyone is entitled to form their own beliefs. As far as people being scared to talk out I can't say specifically about the bombing you refer to since I don't know of the facts but watch the movie "In the Name of God" and you may see that there are always more sides than one to a story. I respect the fact that youre entitled to your beliefs Salmon and that's where the bottom line lies - so am I. Ghufar
  8. Firstly the terrorists don't represent the MAJORITY of Muslims who condemn actions which involve killing the innocent of whatever race or religion. Secondly I think anyone with a half a brain realises that. Ghufar
  9. Quotes are from Max Fusion said : "Then to have the face to say we are racist because we put up a christmas tree in a shopping centre, or sing carols etc." Was there not a rufus like this last year(?) with the local council not sending out Xmas cards or something in case they offended anyone. It is ridiculous to take the view that the fanatics speak for the majority of any group of people. As a muslim resident in Shetland since 1970 and gone to school here, I used to both receive and give Xmas cards and presents. I used to sing Xmas carols and take part in almost all things Christian at school. Even now I would think nothing of wishing a Merry Xmas to anyone as they have a right to celebrate their religious events as much as I have to celebrating mine. If you don't want to take part in Xmas (whether your muslim, atheist, jew or whatever) then whose forcing you anyway ? Things like this are sometimes blown out of proportion by people like the BNP in order to increase tensions and thereby support for themselves. "would they let us build our own churches in their towns? doubt it.... " If you think back a bit then missionaries were sent out by churches for centuries to convert people to Christianity and they still do. Is there any country you can think of that doesn't have a church or Christian presence ? "I firmly believe that if you haven't put anything into the country's economy you shouldn't get anything out...no matter where you come from." Totally agree... "the thing there is that in some places in the UK the whites are in the minority, and it's apparently the Asians that are the worst for being Racist" I agree that the older generation particularly of asians tend to be more racist for which I blame the the day and age of slavery that only they can perhaps remember. As someone who has been brought up in the UK and gone to school here with a majority of non-asian friends, I class myself of the new generation who was given equality by the majority of my classmates and therefore tend to be non-racist. "Example. I knew of one person who was in a well paid job, but he told me if he took everything into account he was only comming in to work for £30 a week more than he'd make on benefits, a single parent with 2 children...would you do a 40hour week for £30?" I had this problem trying to employ a single father and a skilled one at that !!!
  10. Hi There I was expecting that something would come up about the greenhouses after councils suggestions on allotments. Now to put some facts on the table : 1) Although originally planned, the greenhouses are NOT going to be shipped of south. 2) Unfortunately viability was one of the issues of continuing to grow tomatoes, cucumbers etc which led to the eventual sale of he greenhouse - It wasn't possible to make enough money selling to supermakets/shops. 3) The plans we had for the site have been shelved for the forseeable future due to personal circumstances. Namely this was a large furniture/floorcoverings/lighting showroom with cafe and storage area. For those who think this is daft, my stats says 65% of my business comes from the north and the west, I have a multi storey showroom without adequate access (including no lift) and to top it all off my rates bill in Lerwick is astronomical. As an alternative it was then thought that we could setup a eco-housing scheme. 4) I am awaiting on a local group who want to setup some form of horticulture in Fetlar to come back to me with confirmation of their interest in taking the greenhouse. 5) No one local apart from the Fetlar group have ever contacted me with any ideas for the greenhouse - and i'm a fairly approchable person really The allotment idea is quite appealing and I'd be happy to look at discussing the greenhouses playing a part in this. ie possibility of leasing to a group/SIC. Maybe some of the people who are interested could contact me. Ghufar
  11. A Very Happy New Year to all and yours. Ghufar
  12. Start cooking the egg and turn over both egg timers. When the 4min one runs out turn it over When the 7min one runs out turn it over When the 4min runs out the second time (8 minutes) turnover the 7min egg timer (with 1 min remaining) When that runs out it's 9 minutes. Ghufar
  13. As a muslim living in Shetland for over 37 years, I thought it might be worth putting in my view on this. I can't say I practice my religion to the extent I should but ... I absolutely and utterly condemn the decision taken by Sudan and its court. Its a ridiculous state of affairs that will only serve to incite further hatred towards Islam. Being honest I bought a muslim bear named Adam for my daughter. This bear was and is being sold on an Islamic site. Now Adam, Jesus, Abraham, Noah and John (along with many others in the bible and torah) are all prophets in Islam along with Muhammed who is more revered than the rest only because he is the final prophet who founded Islam and brought into being the Quran. What should happen to the creators of Adam the bear ? And those who purchased it ? It beggars beyond belief the extreme to which some people take things. You may have noticed that no other muslim country jumped to support Sudan and that the Muslim Council of Britain believes that this is ludicrous and with the Sudanese lacking in the most basic of common sense. Anyway thats my two pennies worth and I really hope they have the sense to let Mrs Gibbons go. I certainly wouldn't want to carry on staying there if that is the extremes to which they take things. 14. Shetland Broadband are a seperate company. It started off as Shetland Internet - part of Zetnet which was given to Ian Brown in 2005 in lieu of his redundancy package when Zetnet closed down Lerwick. They no longer use Zetnets backbone and apart from the standard dial-up and ADSL also operate throughout Lerwick on Wireless - they may even be out to Scalloway and Gulberwick. Ian Brown & Lubin Poulton (ex-Zetnet) are the main guys there. Ghufar
