  5. Colin I did not mean to have a go I was just pointing out that in rural communities there are things we can do and have done for years food banks is not a new concept as the OP thinks we shared have shared food for years to bring the cost of living down for those who do not have access to it with regulations the sharing of that food is now illegal (home kill) I can understand the selling part of the law but providing food to the community at cost is surely historical. Shetland without oil and gas is a rural community and I am not born and bred I came from Perthshire and certainly it was the way it was done there the ancient trade of barter no money just looking after each other.
  6. Very strange point of view Colin. I for one frequently share my resources with people I perceve rightly or wrongly to have less resources than me.I accept not all are like that and yes I would say I was in the section of "have" I dont see the point in being singular and properous when I can do my bit however small maybe if others took the same view then we wouldn't be in the mess that we are. Attacking the op solves nothing

  11. cheers I wondered as I couldnt see the point in the sailing to Kirkwall tonight I know it wont be good on the sea out there but one boat sailing south the other going to kirkwall kinda begs the question why they couldnt have sailed north at a slower speed to at least maintain the lifeline service and missed out kirkwall
  12. Can someone clarify to which islands is the Northboat classified as a life line service. I am unsure as Orkney has Hamnavoe
  13. Seen more than a few of those "King's of the Road"... What used to irritate me more than a little were slow moving HGV's that would pull out of a junction ahead of me (when there wasn't really enough room) and then 'trundle' along up hill at a snail's pace. The junction at the foot of the Gremista hill is a bad place for that whichever direction you are travelling in.. All it takes is 10-20 seconds of patience on the drivers part... Made me wonder just how they got a licence.. same as you passed a test
  14. I got carpets delivered from sooth guess who yodel here in five days immpressed

  18. I asume you are referring to the Public sector which is one of the main causes of the problem
  19. What ever way you look at it Peat it only puts what we either the consumer or the employer pay perhaps a maximum wage cap may reap more rewards for us poor folks and using that to pay lower earners more least that way its self financing
  20. The minimum wage increase is not to £10 but £8. The benefits of paying a good wage far outweighs paying a poor wage, as we know, currently, most of those claiming housing benefits are employed or retired. So, business is being subsidised by the tax payer anyway. I would rather the better wage and pension to the employee and the cost of that taken from the sometimes high rates businesses have to pay. The happier the employee, the more they will be willing to do better. Of course there will be a few who are shirkers, they survive because of poor management and that only. where do uou think the costs of increasing the minimum wage will go Peat?
  21. Clearly you have no concept of how a business functions Colin. You have a structure personally I preferred to include in the structure the employment of young people straight from school. Only then did they decide which path within that business they found interesting and wished to follow. Staff numbers 20 years ago were around were 30 when I left two years ago they were down to 9 this was mainly caused by the whole wage structure being destroyed by the minimum wage and other enforced overheads being increased. Businesses will cut there cloth to match and in my experiance staff numbers suffered as we didnt have the luxury of increasing prices. So its all very well governments buming on about living wage and minimum wage it is there actions that have got us into the price/wage fight that we are in now
  22. Are you saying that 'youth' should work for peanuts? PS; You might not have noticed but, there is already provision to pay those below a certain age at a lower rate.... I ran a business for over 20 years I always propmoted from within and hired young people over the years it became harder and harder to maintain this not allowed to advertise for office juniors etc we used training agencys to try and get round it but it was a nightmare. My senior staff were the best paid in town and they all came up through the firm we never used training schemes, YTS work trial we always started them on a decent wage. My comment is not without experiance on the subject Colin but the whole minimum wage thing I think is perverse all that happens is firms cut staff in order to keep operating so it was a double edged sword we lost good staff all the time to public sector as they didnt have to make money at the end of the day we did but what goes around comes around most of them lost their jobs in the public sector cuts. Doesnt matter what way you look at it we the tax payer or customer pay for it
