  1. As I said, I place as much importance on freethinking as I do on atheism which is why my daughter is free to choose to go to sunday school and youth camp, I am also happy for my children to be educated about Religion by the school as it is a factor in life that they need to understand. That doesnt mean I think that what you are describing - a completely biased religious education/indoctrination - is in any way appropriate. It might have done you no harm but that doesnt mean to say everyone would come through it with an unbiased view, and how useful was it? Education should be about equipping people with skills and knowledge that will be useful to them, not about filling their heads with a lot of unprovable maybes that even on their best day won't fill a basket at Tesco's. I had a schooling that involved religious assembly daily, prayers 3 times a day, cubs, scouts, Christian RE twice a week, church etc too. By the time I was 7 I had made the clear observation that it was all unverified and unlikely to be true. Can you imagine how frustrating it was to endure 10 more years of being educated and proseltysed to about something that was patently without evidence? For that reason alone I dont think people of a single religion should be let anywhere near an education committee. BTW, comparing Santa Claus - a magic man who brings presents, to a Christian God - an omnipotent entity that can damn you to hell for eternity, is a pretty cheap shot. Here's some context though if you wish to draw such a comparison. You described your RE as involving 9 seperate events each week - thats coming close to 500 events per year. How many events per year did Santa involve you in?
  2. My 9yo went this summer, I had misgivings but I place as much emphasis on "freethinking" as I do on "atheist" so she went with my blessing. She was explicit on her return in explaining that she was greatly distressed that I would be going to hell along with her little brother, amongst other things. Now, the terminate with extreme prejudice part of me suggested getting in the car and going to Sumburgh to have a frank discussion with the people who pupport to be "Christians" that run this camp. The hearts and minds department of Jambo6's (Top Secret) military operations won the day though and decided we have a year to rectify this indoctrination. On the upside she has shown no inclination to go to sunday school since then so perhaps she's done some private cogitation and drawn her own conclusions. As to the OP - Mr Wills is right. He is a lot of the time but chooses to express himself like a naughty schoolboy, which unfortunately undermines his point of view. Walking out of the meeting in this case is not atypical and I really wonder what he thinks it achieves, apart from giving the Shetland Times something to gleefully dwell upon?
  3. Come on!!! Surely the buck stops with the parents for lack of discipline??? As far as education, I attended the AHS and the education is second to none, I think its very unfair to blame the school. I find myself wholeheartedly disagreeing with this. When children are in the care of the school, the teachers are In Loco Parentis. It is up to the school as an institution charged with the care of children to ensure their safety and good behaviour during this period. The Anderson High has always been poor at this to my mind, during the 80's I would often spend my lunchtimes either climbing the cliffs at the Knab or looking for fights at the street, neither of which activity my parents would have encouraged or remotely approved of but the school seemed not to care a fig - nothing changes it appears. Regarding a "second to none" education, I suspect the results achieved at the AHS are more a reflection of the general attitude of Shetland parents towards education than any great methods employed by the school, as I found the education I received to be a rather boring and by rote experience. Not saying either of us is right or wrong here as we're just recalling how it was for us individually.
  4. Why dont you try and reserve your utter disgust and total SHOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! for things like world hunger, war and mass murder like most normal people do, as the library internet hardly warrants it. Probable case of coddled & sheltered life syndrome is Dr Js diagnosis.
  5. I mainly meant the first post of his/hers in this thread, which isnt actually his post but a quote by Icepick. If someone had posted this in English with the same grammar they would likely have got pulled up for that too as there are a fair few of the Grammar police here, and a lot of vikings choices as to how to scribe in Shetland err towards the shortest form in this post which is why I was reminded of texting.
  6. Shame on you guys who cant be bothered to read dialect posts, you might actually learn something by doing so. I understand the nuance and meaning well enough now but thats because I've taken the bother, a nice side-benefit of this is that I can e-mail my friends in dialect much to their amusement. Sometimes I can even understand my wife Although there is no standard written form to Shetland I should add that when I read viking74's first post I was immediately reminded of textspeak as it seemed very staccato & abbreviated with dodgy grammar. No adult forums tolerate txt, Usenet abbr yes, but txt is almost universally loathed on forums and I wonder if that may have contributed to the churlish responses he got?
  7. You're all way too nice. Had a similiar call a month ago, my SO passed me the phone and I shouted "f*** off you fraudulent c***" down it. I think we have a rape alarm somewhere, maybe have to dig it out in case there's a next time....
  8. I tried this last night - vast improvement so thanks for the tip. Still cant ping bt properly but can access pretty much everything else at an acceptable speed.
  9. Anyone know which artists (if any) are supporting Newton Faulkner tonight?
  10. Darkfall for the past year. Recent connectivity has been an excuse to try Dragon Age:Origins, I'm finding the "storytelling" movie bits very tedious though after playing an open pvp game with FFA loot for so long.
  11. I watched Moon, the 2009 film by Duncan Jones recently. That put me off any kind of notions like this. Its the most disturbing sci-fi film I've seen since I saw Silent Running in about 1976. I was only little then but I was completely hysterical after watching it and couldnt even talk about SR sensibly until fairly recently. Both explore similar concepts of people who are cut off in space, theres something I must find very scary about the idea of being completely abandoned by my race. Which is odd as I'm pretty anti-social really.
  12. Not sure what the Camera Centre sells thats a bargain, do some of the posters on this thread work there? Recently bought a phone charger from there in a hurry - £15, could of got one for £3 on ebay if I hadnt needed it quickly. Father in law needed rechargeable batteries for a cordless phone - was quoted £22 for 4, got them for £3 on ebay. Bought a Digital SLR last year, a Sony Alpha 200 which was featured as their star buy at the time, got a better package for £80 less from Jessops who the CC seem to often compare themselves to. A quick example on their current stock, first DSLR I looked at on their website is £499, reduced from £681.39 http://www.thecameracentre.net/shop/sony-alpha-380-c-w-18-55mm.html Google it for yourself but I found it for £130 less (£369.98 ) in about 30 seconds at http://www.bestcameras.co.uk/shop/acatalog/Sony_Alpha_A380___Sony_18-55_lens.html with a free case thrown in, free delivery, 3 year warranty and a lot of well priced accessory options. I find the original price of £681.39 hard to swallow too, Sony themselves are advertising the Alpha 390, which has superceded the 380, with the same lens at a manufacturers RRP of £449 http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsb-body-and-1-lens/dslr-a390l As for after sales on cameras, they do have some folk working there who really know what they are talking about and are very helpful, unfortunately though the CC does not stock any lenses so even if you purchase a body from them you'll end up having to buy everything else from a proper camera shop. And dont lets even start on their printing charges....
  13. The barge though, is nothing to do with the construction of the Total Laggan Gas Plant. As far as I know, its just for the Aurora Gas Plant mod at Sullom Voe. Many of the people on it have been in Shetland for months already staying in hotels and B&Bs. The reason the barge is now being used is that the summer tourist season and the Hamefarin in particular have reduced the available accomodation. I think the majority of these folk are highly skilled commissioning engineers and technicans and the insinuation that they're a bunch of jolly Irish construction workers (Major piece of stereotyping on your part there btw) is very wide of the mark. Many of them have been living in the town since last year so the impact should really be not noticeable, in answer to the OP. I think that the construction workers for Laggan will be housed at a purpose built camp at Sella Ness. No idea how big itll be but it certainly wont be comparable in size or longevity to the construction of SVT.
  14. One problem is though, young children do not understand this and the all to regular reports of small children being savaged or even worse killed reflect it. I think all dogs should be muzzled and on a leash in public as I tend to agree that its not just so-called "Dangerous Dogs" that are the issue. Public safety *and* public comfort are important An example of what I mean by the latter - A couple of years ago I was taking my small children for a walk round the back of Clickimin Loch and a nice respectable looking wife with 2 smallish dogs comes along. Both dogs were very excited and my kids got very upset. Now, this I can cope with, but when she told me I really ought to take my kids somewhere else for a walk as this was a stupid place to go if you dont like dogs I was simply lost for words - well, lost for words I wanted my children to hear - This sort of attitude gives dog "lovers" a really bad name and legally enforced muzzling would go some way to protecting the public from the kind of intimidation that can be felt from dogs. And Silketeen - Grats on getting a bite with one of the most obvious trolls ever posted, takes real skill
  15. I found it kind of weird at first. If you're trying to scroll along a road it seems like you arent moving as the car behind pretty much keeps it distance, took me a while to realise I was actually getting it move and obviously the car I'm seeing is moving as its following the google car - duh
  16. Go onto google maps, make sure have it set to maps rather than satellite, then keep zooming in as far as you can, eventually it'll switch from map view to street view
  17. Apparently closing over the school holidays, not good for competitive swimmers or parents with bored kids. Saving money by closing during the holidays misses the point of why we have the pools in the first place imo. Petition to reverse this here if anyone is interested - http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/shetlandpools/index.html
  18. I bought something on ebay last Friday (From Nottingham) and it arrived via Royal Mail on Monday
  19. Well, maybe this is a bit snippit, but I dont think its been anything great since Jonathan Wills was axed.
  20. Alcohol Heroin Boredom/ Lack of things to do Peer Pressure Mental ill-health Lack of help/ professional support with any of the above
  21. Since I know I've got several screws louse, I'll ask the obvious questions: Isn't it a case that head lice don't discriminate between clean and dirty hair? & Aren't all schools bothered with the problem from time to time? Having said that, if parents don't take the responsibility to clear the nits from themselves or their children, then the problem keeps coming back. So it's more a case of laziness on the part of some folk, rather than personal hygiene. BTW, never had the little pests,, not enough hair,, but I remember the schools sending out warning notices several times a year. Pretty sure thats a thing of the past, not PC anymore to let the parents know their kids might get afflicted.
  22. Despite being a liberal 99% of the time, the parent in me says crack out the ropes and pick a lampost. If we had a legal system that dealt more severely with this type of crime would I feel differently - probably not, so being overly critical of certain legal decisions is perhaps a matter of having a coloured personal perspective. As to thread locking - JS got a worse beating on here than the seals did and some of it was very inflammatory - at least be consistent.
  23. Kind of annoyed me to listen to Radio Shetland headline reporting this last night. Two reports behind it was a Heroin courier getting 4 1/2 years for having 8k worth of the stuff on him. A couple more reports behind that is someone remanded for child molesting. Kids being sold Heroin & getting molested is exponentially more important than the grisly fate of some seals in my not so humble opinion. Whilst I can see why it makes the national news due to not being a commonplace crime, surely our local media should report with more regard for what is actually affecting the local community. With that in mind the sense of perspective our esteemed ST shows regarding these crimes in Fridays issue will be interesting to see. Can they contain themselves from being as sensationalist as their airborne brethren, or will it be yet more squashed seals making the headlines?
  24. Funny that theres a thread recently started on this. I was looking on ebay this morning for an F Type FM aerial (Thats one of those little satellite screw on connectors for anyone who wonders), and came across a K40 mag mount (55 quid - eek). That brought back memories, mine went airborne doing 110 down the Kames in a 3 litre Capri. DV27s after that . I was amazed at the amount of CB gear for sale on ebay, especially lots of multiband sets with full european coverage - anyone still using a CB for fun? I used to use a power amp and home made aerials in the attic for chatting to folk across europe, would be tempted to try again if theres actually anyone out there.
