  1. Do you know anyone with a jumper board that you can borrow, this is probably the most likely way of rescuing it. If you are local to me you can borrow mine.
  2. Check if you can get internet access and keep in touch whikle you are there. We'll keep you company, there's usually one or two on line even in the wee sma hours.
  3. Surely we should have a choice of not having ANY tunnels in the Poll. I can't see any of the Islands being FOR a tunnel, no Isles cars for starters.
  4. http://www.speedtest.net/result/700794010.png http://www.pingtest.net/result/9306394.png And I have complained to both Virgni Media & BT about the state of my line but they claim it's fine.........
  5. Delivering post in Vidlin yesterday & today was fun. I've found that Vauxhall Combi's don't tend to like being asked to drive through snow drifts Providing you are sensible about it and keep the driving smooth then the roads were passable with care - doesn't stop some people from hooning about at warp-factor 10 though
  6. I bought a Samsung ES15, 10.2MP, 3x Optical Zoom, 5x Digital Zoom for £57 brand new off eBay as a present for my Dad. He's very pleased with it (ease of use, quality of pictures).
  7. Read the BBC report and can see mixed reviews on the perception of the role of a Doula. Once hired she is there as the expectant mothers representative if the mother so chooses, to defend the mothers birth choices in the same way her partner would, at a time when the mother is in a very vulnerable physical and emotional state. During pregnancy a doula will be able to offer information regarding birth choices, pain relief, positions for birth, how their plans may change if the birth becomes complicated and to inform a woman that it is fine to change options if circumstances change. That a birth that has medical intervention is NOT a failure, sometimes is necessary for the baby's and mothers safety. Her role is to allow the mother to make informed choices. Whilst I have to say that Shetland has a midwifery service to be proud of, having used it, shortages of midwives and time contraints making 1-1 care nigh on impossible, a doula can act as the bridge between midwife and mother if all parties can work in partnership. Having used southern midwifery as well, they are overstretched and under budgeted, women deliver is frantic delivery suites with 1 midwife watching up to 5 mothers, many of these women are left alone until point of delivery and there are many instances of even this being missed! Maternal fear whilst labouring causes more delivery complications than medical complications do, these are usually discovered much earlier in a pregnancy and managed accordingly. A doula by her presence alone can lower that fear barrier and promote a safer delivery. I have experienced bullying by medical staff (not here, I have to add) often because the mothers choice doesn't fit with the current trend employed by the midwifery service. ie A breech birth does not have to be a c section, but try getting a midwife to accept that a woman may choose to attempt a vaginal delivery before agreeing to go under the knife! Usually given a rundown of horror stories about how it most often goes wrong, (not true), just most midwives have never attended a breech birth and fill the mother with their own fear. Post delivery a doula is far more likely to spot the onset of PND than most too. Paulb, I respectfully suggest you gain a lot more knowledge of the subject before you dive in at the deep end. Whilst I accept your comments stating that a doula acting a support for mum can be positive, I point out it can be so much more. If the maternity department have concerns I suggest they try talking to doulas.
  8. She states Emotional and physical support during the birth including help with positioning and basic massage techniques A doula is widely used in many countries and has been for hundreds of years. a great source of firsthand practical knowledge and support for a woman during the pregnancy, birth and post birth period. Especially during the birth (as a person authorised by the labouring woman to act as her interpreter with the midwife - (a position of huge trust) if a womans partner does not want or cannot be there, and no mother/sister/aunt figure is suitable or available. At no point does she claim to be qualified as a midwife nor does she offer to supervise the birth or that her sevices are instead of the midwife.
  9. ^^ well said. After moving up here we bught a set of snow chains and carry them when this weather kicks in. Haven't needed them yet, but glad to know I can lay my hands on them in need.
  10. Could have done with them clearing some of the pathways outside of the Lerwick area. The path to our local shop has been a death trap since the snow first came down. A lot of local residents using the shop have no option other than to walk there, or detour on to the main road which has no pavement and icy roads. Its a skating rink down its entire length, challenge enough for the able and fit a nightmare for those with small kids or the elderly. A quad distributing grit down the path would have helped but absolutely nothing done.
  11. I have to say that I feel that the police do a good job (speaking from experience south). It's all well and good knowing who did it but if you are too scared to speak up then it will continue. Whilst living in Huddersfield we went visiting family for the weekend a couple of weeks prior to Christmas. Upon our return, the house had been burgled, all the kids presents stolen as well as nigh on all the electricals. We had a reinforced UPVC front door which they kicked in during broad daylight. Nobody saw a thing !! A few weeks into the new year, another family moved in across the road and within a fortnight they were burgled at about 1pm on a Sunday afternoon, they were trailing out carrying bin bags of stuff and also using a holdall they had stolen from me. So you phone the police and report them, stuff gets recovered, people in court & punished - what do I get, beaten up outside my own house & threatened with a knife in front of my kids and our car petrol-bombed at 1am. Cue the police on our doorstep and within 30 mins they had us & 7 kids out of the house and the house boarded up. Yes you get the odd officious one now and again but a lot (and I'm not saying ALL) of it is down to how you deal with and respond to them.
  12. Just been told that Mossbank & Brae and closed again today so early start to the holidays - much to the disgust of my kids !!
  13. Just come back from Brae to Mossbank and the snow is being blown off the hills into the road, visibility is severely reduced, had to keep the speed to 15mph and thanks heavens I knew the road It's really not good out there folks, only go out if you really have to and even then, take extra care.
  14. ^^^That would be Mazoomamobile or somesuch. For me it would have to be the plethora of "Sell us your old unwanted gold" ads. "I sent in my diamond band from my 1st marriage......." "I sold my gold chain and with the money got ticketc to a European away game...." etc etc Heard in the news that a test was carried out with these companies whereby £300 worth of gold was sent in and the amounts offered varied from £60 - £210

  16. Voe show is Sat 1st August if that helps
  17. I heard a rumour that The Golden Coach has moved from Hillhead - is this true? If so any idea where they are now as I fancied going there tonight...
  18. I've just listened to "More than a lifetime" and "Creeping Willow" and I have to say they are superb. I'm normally into 60's/70's/80's music and my taste stops at 31/12/89 but after hearing it a couple of times, I've just ordered my signed CD Can't wait for it to arrive now so I can listen to the rest of it. Nice one Malachy.
  19. They came into the delivery offices this morning (Brae anyway) and will be out with the post sometime this week. You are not missing much IMO.
  20. As mentioned elsewhere, try to practice with toys first. The main thing to remember is SLOWLY (almost crawling pace if needs be) as it gives you more time to see the trailer wandering and time to correct it. My first towing experience was with a Transit van plus caravan over to France - took a wrong turn in a small village and ended up on a gravel road which was a dead end. Had to do a reverse 3-point turn with ditches either side. It took several attempts whilst loudly questioning the parentage of said caravan Also keep calm as the more flustered you get when it goes wrong, the worse it gets. Small trailers can be a pain the posterior and someones suggestion of getting wide-angle wing mirror attachments was a good one. Keep practising and best of luck.
  21. Hey Khit - I'm sure I have some raspberry leaf tea and evening primrose oil in the cupboard if you want it or you could try "the other"
  22. There is Stronachs (opposite JRJ's). Address: Port Business Park, Gremista. ZE1 0TW Tel: 01595 693718 Fax: 01595 693887 e-mail: bodyrepairers@hotmail.com They seem to do a lot of insurance approved repairs. Not had any experience of their work so couldn't comment on it. I'm sure others on here will be able to help. As for a Saab specialist, the only thing I can think of is trying Scalloway Motors (they used to be Volvo dealers) so may well have Saab experience if nobody can suggest anyone else. Address: Berry Road, Scalloway. ZE1 0UJ Tel: 01595 880662 Fax: 01595 880226 Website: http://www.scallowaymotors.co.uk e-mail: info@scallowaymotors.co.uk
  23. Question P was a referendum issue approved by the voters of Baltimore, Maryland, USA, in November 2002. Simply stated, the initiative proposed "that the City Council consists of 14 members, each to be elected from a different district, and a Council President, to be elected Citywide". [1] Baltimore had 18 council members, thus, the question would have reduced the size of local government. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Question_P
