  1. ^^ A cross lamb is one produced from crossing 2 sheep beeds, commonly crossed are Shetland ewes and Cheviot ram, gives a hardy cross lamb suitable to raise for private and some cultural groups meat production as it grows faster and has a larger overall carcass than a pure Shetland and the cross ewe lambs get sold south and bred to a terminal sire ie Texel (large muscle conformation breed) producing large lambs for the prime lamb market out of hardy milky ewes. Those caught out in the Faroe debacle were producing Pure Shetland Lamb. Sheep production in the UK is a 3 tier process of which all 3 levels are necessary to maintain.
  2. Firstly I think that the councillors vote was wrong. Yes the SLMG would have been in a better position if their Faroese problem hadn't happened. The SIC should look to its own before getting on its high horse there though http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2009/02/06/faroe-refuses-smyril-compensation/ How much have they lost to Faroe? Pot calling kettle black springs to mind, only when they muck up they have deeper pockets than the SLMG! If the SLMG/Laxfirth goes belly up, no longer will I be able to buy lambs from a crofter to go direct to slaughter at Laxfirth, pay Laxfirth for kill and cut at a non members rate and reduce the food miles of the meal at my table. It is bizare that lambs I see out of my window will have to travel of island and I will have to pay the over inflated prices of lower quality lamb at the supermarket. Go figure! I moved up here a while back now BECAUSE of the lifestyle that a rural community offered, and I fear I am about to watch yet another part of the rural UK go into agricultural decline. I am not a crofter or smallholder, I have used Laxfirth and would like to for years to come. I would like to have the option. The councillors who voted this down need to wake up to who elects them to this position and start listening to what their voters want. If you want the decision relooked at and overturned, protest, email them, write to them, use your democratic rights to make yourself heard. Don't go with a whimper, if you have to go make it LOUD!
  3. Failed one of them Cows do NOT drink MILK
  4. I'm in Firth and have just run the test and got a result of 660Kbps Better than I was expecting anyway
  5. Not that I know of. Most people ask a friend/neighbour to dog sit/walk or take the dog with them on their travels.
  6. You would think The Scalloway meat Co would have a petition in favour of a local slaughterhouse, talk about low food miles. I'd love for it to come to the north Mainland and offer some more local work, not much chance of that happening though, too far from Lerwick. As a confirmed carnivore, I'm quite happy to kill my meat and eat it I Refuse to be a NIMBY. As for kids having where their food comes from - in their face - why not? Is the fact our food used to be living, breathing animals, a dirty secret to be hidden away? Be proud for the opportunity to have a clean, well run facility that cares about local livestock welfare in your midst where it can be seen to be providing a service to its local community. (Steps off soapbox)
  7. As a soothmoother, I would love to have translations posted with these phrases so I can more fully understand some of my local friends when we chat. I don't expect them to change how they normally talk just because they think I won't get it.
  8. We moved from Yorkshire to Shetland with 5 cats and they transported perfectly well in cat carriers. Book them a kennel on the ferry and if you can book on a crossing that stops at Orkney. You can then have them out in the kennel with food/water and a litter tray (you have to provide these yourself though). When you book a kennel, make sure you book a LARGE kennel as this would provide ample room for 3 cats in together. They do smaller kennels but tbh once you have put a litter tray in there, the cat has virtually no room to move. When the boat stops at Orkney you are allowed down onto the car deck to go and check on them if you wish. As you don't drive, I would suggest you go and see your vet as they can prescribe travel medication which will de-stress your cats on such a long journey. All the best and hope your move goes well.
  9. They already do a rent a blanket and pillow. (Pillow a quarter the size of a sofa cushion, and blanket tiny and so thin it wouldn't stop a draft where it does cover!) Have wasted my money on these before and ALWAYS take my own now.
  10. Just to make you all feel better, we use approx £75 a week. The 2 of 3 storage heaters are on, no bedroom panel heaters are used. Our main usage is the washing machine, tumble drier and computer.
  11. I am also on O2 and get patchy coverage in Brae. My boss is on Vodafone and gets slightly better coverage but it's be no means foolproof. I have found that with my new phone (Samsung U600) I got very poor signal in Brae and it was normally non-existent. However, using an ancient Nokia 3510i, I get better coverage and am more likely to get signal in Brae.
  12. ^^ Have to say I totally agree with you. You can't cure this sort of person, they are a ticking bomb. As for the suggestion of support groups preventing reoffending, complete rubbish, if even 1 in 10 manage to reoffend it is 1 in 10 too many. About tim the law showed the victim justice, they have to live with the 'assault to the person' for life, so should the purpotrator of the crime. If you have to let them out, brand them somewhere clearly seen so their crime is visable to all they meet. As for housing them, back on topic, such a self confessed offender SHOULD be remanded until sentancing, his guilt is not in question, his risk to the community's children is obvious. The risk to HIM is even clearer. We should not have him foisted on our communities, the council should have no obligation to house him, the court authorities should deal with him until his sentance is handed down. May it be a Very long one.
  13. Thanks everyone for the replies, I will get onto it
  14. Hi, Does anyone know of somehwere that hires out carpet cleaners as I have got several that need a good clean (oh the joy of kids and animals). Many Thanks
  15. I also enjoy sitting at roundabouts behind folk who has no idea what to do. Or my pet hate, as someone has already mentioned, the people who indicate right to go straight on However, Shetland drivers are the epitome of driving excellence compared to what I experienced in France. Try driving round the Periferique in rush hour dring an old Ford Transit towing a caravan and not having the greatest of ideas which exit we were supposed to be taking....... The number of times a nutty Frenchman would overtake us and then swerve across 4 lanes of traffic to just make his exit. Mind you this is the same country that found the level of drink-driving accidents unacceptable where people went off the road and crashed into trees.......the solution was to cut down the trees ?!?!?!?
  16. FWIW - I am of the opinion that if your situation is that bad, then surely you would be accepting a house wherever it was situated. As snow has already said Firth is actually a very nice place to live. I stepped of the boat from "doon sooth" 17th August last year having left my wife and children in Yorkshire - I had been offered a job but had nowhere to stay. I did not get offered a house that day, I ended up staying at the Clickimin in a tent, then was very kindly offered a caravan to stay in by a Shetland friend of my wifes whilst trying to sort out a council house (you know who you are - Thankyou ). After I had made my application, I was at the council office every few days and got to know my Housing Officer who was more than helpful. I went to them with a list of empty houses and told them I would take any of them. After constant nagging I was offered a house in Sandside and moved in on 26th November. I was then able to move my wife and children up here in time for Christmas. I work in Lerwick and have to rely on the bus to get to work so have to be up early but it was either that or spend even longer waiting for a house in an area I particularly wanted. Firth/Mossbank gets slated on here frequently but as I have said before, do a stint down south in some of the areas that I have lived and then come and tell me that Firth/Mossbank is that bad. After being burgled a week before Christmas at our house just outside of Huddersfield and having all the kids presents stolen, knowing who did it but not being able to prove it, then a month later seeing the same toerags burgling another house in broad daylight of someone recently moved to the area (using a hodall stolen from my house). Other people were out in their gardens watching them do it...........I called the police and reported them for it. To then be attacked outside my own house by several of the toerags with my kids watching and for our car to be petrol-bombed and bricks put through our kitchen windows and have to be moved out in the middle of the night by the police..........is Firth/Mossbank really that bad a place to live - I think not, compared to that it's a paradise. Cerain councils down south operate a policy whereby if someone is in critical need for a house then they bypass the points system entirely and get offered whatever property is next available no matter where it is. If you decline it, you are offered the next one that becomes available. After 2 such offers, if you refuse them both then you are considered not to be that desperate after all and they will not offer you anything else within 12 months - WHATEVER your situation in that time.
  17. No idea how to test the speed of my connection BUT when I was setting it up with Virgin, the tech on the end of the phone told me not to bother ordering anything more than their 1MB service as he had run a test on my line and the best I could ever hope to get was 500k !!!! Then again, I am up the north end of the island and was told that due to the condition of the line and distance from the main exchange, 500k was the best I could hope for - whereabouts are you, Colin?
  18. I can't see them getting permission for a forecourt on the site, not with the size of the plot and the close proximity to the other petrol station in Sound. Will have to wait and see what it's like when the refit is finished. I'm torn with news of their arrival. Yes from the point of view of their cheaper clothes range (a godsend when trying to keep my kids in threads!) and No from the point of view of the potential damage it could have on the smaller retailers. I know there is going to be a "honeymoon" period when every man (and woman) with their dog will be in there for a quick shuftie. With some of the smaller shops, if we don't continue to use them then they may well disappear for good. What price change ?!?!?!
  19. AFAIK you are able to order tesco stuff from any store so basically anything from their home electrical range etc. Whether or not they will ship them free to the island is another matter. Seeing some of their prices online, this can only be a bad thing for some of the other shops in town. Or as a kick up the jacksie for others....... no names mentioned of course.
  20. Thanks for all the replies. Got the wheels in motion to get my card.
  21. Can someone please put me out of my misery and tell me how I go about applying for this? I have tried searching their website to no avail. Any idea how much discount you get? Thanks
