  1. Surely though if we had something like that at 60p per mile, with it being 216 miles from Aberdeen that would be a cost of £129.60 plus the £5 initial charge plus any costs for additional adults and cabins etc. This is only based on travelling one-way. Ok it would work out cheaper in "High" season but surely it would make it more expensive for "Low" and "Mid" season? Or am I missing the point???
  2. As a sooth moother (hope I got that right) here only a couple of months now, with bairns, I am happy to respect other peoples right to converse in dialect if that is what they want to do. My bairns are picking up odd dialect words quite happily and listening to them can be interesting and perplexing. I wouldn't dream of telling them to stop, certainly not if it helps them to feel a better conection with schoolfriends. I do find letters in the paper in dialect virtually incomprehensible and even when I try to work some of them out, I'm never sure I've translated them correctly. Maybe a dialect translation caption under the letter would help incomers gen up on some of the more unusual terms. When chatting to someone and they use dialect I don't understand I WILL ask for a translation, rather than pretend to understand. No don't stop using dialect, help other people to understand, try and include us. It does sometimes feel that dialect is used to alienate a person from a conversation, I don't think it is often deliberately used that way, but misunderstanding can cause problems. I am learning to retune my ear and revise ny understanding of some English words that have different meanings entirely up here.
  3. C'mon now North - not all folks from Laaaandan are on intimate terms with the local constabulary In answer to the original question, yes there is unskilled work available up here IF you are willing to do it. Personally I moved up here from Yorkshire 6 months ago and got a job working at the Fish Market in Lerwick (yeah ok my work clothes smell of fish and nobody will sit next to me on the bus BUT it meant I could get a house sorted out and move the wife and children up here). Wages are not the greatest but seeing as all I am doing is hauling boxes of fish and driving a truck, I didn't expect them to be. It is a world away from where we came from (did a stint in SE London too) - up here I can go out and leave my house unlocked and let the kids out to play after dark without having to worry.
  4. Njugle, you may well be right about the tyres - the Citroen had no wheels on it when they came to collect it as they had already been put to use on another car.
  5. The Amenity Trust don't charge for the removal of scrap cars. Had an MoT failure Citroen removed the other week. Called them on the Friday and it was gone by the following Wedsnesday
  6. A 1973 Austin 1300 (the one from Fawlty Towers where Basil beats it with a tree branch when it breaks down). One owner from new, genuine 44,000 miles, it was 21 years old when I bought it for £400 and it never missed a beat, would start in all weathers much to my Dad's annoyance as his 1990 Granada hated the cold and would refuse to start Had it for 12 months and sold it on for £350 when I bought a newer car - was working at a filling station at the time and it arrived to fill up 2 years later, still going strong.
  7. My purchase was a rear projection TV out of the small ads in Shetland Times. HUGE screen and only £50. Will go nicely in my living room once I have the keys to my house. SWMBO wasn't too pleased till I told her a) how much it cost and that she could watch the entire set of M*A*S*H DVD's on it. Went a little crazy and bought a DVD Recorder from eBlag to go with it.
  8. Well I went to the recent auction and what an evening out it was too Managed to get a few things for the house plus some other stuff from Scrapstore. Got most of the "major" items now and for not a lot of money either. I went to HH for a bed, chest of drawers and coffee table and came home with all of that PLUS a Singer sowing machine, a picture of a Lifeboat and a map of Shetland ?!?!?!?!? Oh and I went to the Auld Skool (sp) shop in Aith on Sunday and got a bunk bed frame for the princely sum of £2.50 in their half price sale. All I need now is a gas cooker, hoover and big TV for the living room - keep on looking.
  9. Is that near the Stronachs Vehicle Repair place? Sounds like the kind of place I'll need to frequent on a regular basis
  10. Are these auctions still running? Anyone any idea of how frequently they are run? I'm moving into a new house in the next 3 weeks so am on the lookout for things to fill it. Thanks
