[Thanks for the merge mods, missed it! ] @ Hobbiniho True about the multiplex, however the single screen was bang in the centre with clubs and bars and good footfall... I really thought it would survive. As for prices I don't mind paying a bit more as I don't go to see films very often.

[***Mod Edit - Merged with existing thread***] Just came across this video of inside the Mareel cinema and thought I would share in case you haven't seen it. http://www.shetlandarts.org/shetland-arts-discusses-plans-for-cinema-in-mareel/ Sounds great but I'm wondering how it's going to afford to run it. We had a new single screen in the centre of the city where I used to live, great location (as well as the multiplex well outside of town). It showed the guaranteed crowd pullers Harry Potters, Matrix 2 & 3, LOTR, etc), but still didn't make enough money to stay open... and it had live performances on the stage too. Mareel one is showing the expensive big budget films as well as something on most of the time it seems. I hope it does work though

stilldellin, what was the max gust speed?
-
Yeah about 4 ft of it
-
Hey that looks a nice safe place to be in a storm!! One of those or a underground hobbit-style house will do very nicely!!
-
@ Unlinked - quite a steep roof so I don't think it would collapse from snow @ Stilldellin - nice pic @ GT - I like that! Feel sorry for the sheep though Actually can sheep swim? Oops off topic... I've been telling myself it's not like anybody actually gets their roof blown off, and I should calm down, and then I read that that several people had roof problems where sections were blown off or the fire brigade was called to secure roofs. I see the gale warning has been put back for Shetland.
-
That air raid shelter offer is still open DK...... I wondered if that comment earlier had been directed at me If I was in the air raid shelter I'd be worried because I wasn't at home... as much as I hate it. What DO you do if your roof blows off?

reckons 49kts = 56mph thurs 3am... We'll see I liike BBC for the pressure chart, Met office for wind direction (5 day tab) and detail close to me, mixed with magic seaweed

Agreed... I don't know why the weather warning was removed from Shetland!! I would go with Magic Seaweed on this. Met office for Sumburgh reckons 74mph early Thursday morning... Add 10mph I reckon.

Shetlink: is it time to quit?
DizzyKipper replied to Malachy's topic in User guides and tech support
Is Shetlink still a valuable part of Shetland life? Definitely. Maybe some of you might be forgetting the 'silent lurkers' who use the forum for tips, help and news also. They may not even be registered on here as a user. Shetlink has been no end of help to me, and I'd like to thank anyone who has helped with a query in the past. Mods have always responded to my requests quickly; and as moderation is a thankless task, I applaud them for their efforts. Three Xmas cheers for Shetlink! -
veterinary surgery

Scalloway vet is Ok but not great for buses. Lerwick was excellent, you could leave your pet after the appointment, do your shopping and pick them up at bus time -
I have them broadband only, I like them. Your speed will depend on your connection and distance to your exchange - out of Plusnet's hands. Plusnet does have a fair usage policy but it is very clear about it. Depending on which package you select some types of download are 'restricted' and the traffic 'shaped'. I do not download movies or do peer to peer stuff, and all the things I DO do are prioritised so it suits me perfectly Just pick what suits you! No download limits or restrictions at night time. There is a forum for second line support too, which is good if you should have any issues with a ticket.

Frances PM me if you have further problems, there is a forum where you can get access to second line support.

Plusnet, service is good, connection is good.

Emergency roof repairs - recommendations?
DizzyKipper replied to enkelt skapninger's topic in Consumer Advice
How much IS the going rate for say, replacing, 3 'slate effect' tiles? I have no idea if it is more than my excess. -

Just out of interest, wouldn't you ring the insurance company? Don't they have to arrange it? -
In 1986, if you remember, the public were asked to contribute to an archive, a snaphot of life. Photos had to be given on slides and text on floppy disks. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/domesday I was looking at the shetland entries. Interesting!

Road condition reports - Snow, Rain, Fog, etc
DizzyKipper replied to khitajrah's topic in Anything & Everything Else
Justme me thank you for the constructive comments. That the gritters go out before the buses is useful to know. Obviously we do stock up for winter, etc. When you don't have a car, and rely on a feeder bus, you have to be aware that the bus might have problems. The local shop is hardly local to me, unfortunately. As much as you can stock up, you will eventually have to replace fresh produce. You do your best to travel on good days. Knowing where the bus companies draw the line on the amount of snow (i.e. from experience) would be useful, especially to someone who hasn't lived here that long. -

Great thanks! I wish the buses were better given, even just a page from Leasks they could update, saying X bus running, expect 20 min delays, no feeder bus from it. Y bus running, no delays, feeder bus unaffected. It's awkward planning shopping when you don't know if snow in the middle of the day is going to cancel your bus to get home -

Is there anywhere that says where the buses will or won't run, or a central site giving travel info in bad weather?
