  1. I have a friend down south who wants to visit for the guitar festival. I can only find info for previous years. I'm guessing this is because the 'acts'/venues have not yet been booked so there is not information yet? Am I correct in assuming that it goes on for a number of weekends in different locations? If he's coming for a weekend, I don't know what to advise - to pick a weekend where the venues are close to where he is staying and he likes who is playing? Do venues get sold out? Is there any other info or advice you can give me to pass on? Thanks
  2. We took two cats on the boat. Awful experience. We asked for a kennel, much bigger and easier to get into. Unfortunately all the kennels had dogs in, so we had to use the small animal cages which are stacked one above each other. The numbers we were given were head height, and we could hardly see into them. There were cars and noise behind us, and not much room to grab a cat by the scruff from a carrier and put them head height into the cage. It was even worse trying to get them out from the back of the cage and try and get them back in the carriers - we couldn't clean them out when we left because we couldn't reach. We were so close to having them escape onto the car deck. Was a nightmare!
  3. The Orange mast down south doesn't appear to be working...
  4. Well I might leave the checking of animal privates to someone else I have never handled an udder but they look pretty soft to me... we don't get -50s like in Siberia but -5 with the wind here - surely the wind chill must be bad? Doesn't it hurt? Doesn't the skin get sore?
  5. [**Mod edit - Merged from "Udders"**] Why is it, that a cow's udders don't get frostbite in winter?
  6. ahhh that's what a spoot is
  7. Why didn't I think of that! It does indeed seem a leisurely walk Are there many stalls to see?
  8. Thanks I'm guessing where Veensgarth goes left and Gott goes right, that's the crossroads. From there it's 0.7 miles to where I think the hall is on your map. That's OK on a nice day. Is there a hill? I didn't want to get there noon-ish as it would be just my luck to finally get there and find them all packed up and gone home So it looks like a walk from the crossroads. Hopefully any hill is sloping down to the hall... if there's a bus back the return uphill bit wouldn't matter!
  9. Hello we were thinking of going to the farmers market in Tingwall, maybe also the garden centre. Could anyone tell me what time the market is usually over? By the looks of the buses, the earliest I can get to Tingwall is at 14.00 Oh wait that was number 23. The number 9/12 at 9.05 gets to Tingwall at 9.15 Any ideas where the bus stop is in relation to the market and planticrub as I have no idea! Thanks
  10. Meteor show tomorrow if the sky is clear http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-13161054
  11. It IS illegal to urinate in public, unless you are pregnant Just done some digging in Google and it seems a man can relieve himself as long it is on the rear wheel of his motor vehicle and his right hand is on the vehicle. Can't be 100% sure after all it IS from the internet... Would have to watch the indecent exposure issue though I guess.
  12. I thought that, and was going to appear Clever by posting. Alas, you beat me to it
  13. was thinking of tornadoes... maybe spring rather than summer though
  14. True... it's dryer than Bangladesh and wetter than the Ethiopia, and less windy than the carribean in the hurricane season and thank goodness we don't live around Oklahoma in the summer. We don't get big earthquakes either. Doesn't stop me longing for summer in Shetland.
  15. I have a friend in London, who was on teamspeak when I joined, in a temporary channel called "Sitting in the Sun". I (non)accidentally altered it to "Smog Sniffing", and departed. Yes I know that was slightly off topic. Am I jealous of their warm spring sunshine, buzzy bees, little garden birds twittering...? Yup just a bit 'homesick' for my old garden right now... I know spring will come, and Shetland when the sky is blue is glorious, I just wish it would hurry.
  16. Aah, so these contractors only insulate loft rooms, with access doors. Unbelievable. In fact that's not an April Fool gag is it? Nope
  17. http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2011/04/01/revealed-ambitious-plan-for-six-line-isles-wide-underground-rail-network/ Just remember the date today (***Mod Edit - Merged with previous topic on Shetlands proposed railway system***)
  18. Their assessor came to look survey roof space. We have 2 rooms in the loft space, like many houses here. There has to be a third of the total loft area to cover before they will add the insulation. He said ours has. However, since the men doing the work would not be able to stand up straight they would be unable to do the job. Well they might have to stoop a bit (the electrians had no problems doing the wiring in there). He said if there was a problem and one of them was ill you wouldn't be able to get the worker out... bizarre as you can walk in through a door in the bedroom, it's not even a loft hole above you. He said we should do it ourselves, but we'd have to pay for it. Thoroughly disillusioned. On another note, looking at the Which? magazine about cavity wall insulation, it seems there are parts of the UK which shouldn't have CWI at all - Zone 4 - because of heavy driving rain that can cause damp on internal walls. Naturally Shetland is in Zone 4. For Zone 3 it suggests talking to suppliers about a different insulation materials that can be used to prevent damp going across, but Zone 4 was a definite no-no.
  19. Been a bit disappointed in radio. We have a CD/DAB radio with FM, was great down south, everything they promise. Tried using the FM bit here and got a poor reception. So went to Harry's and got another and that is not good either, depite line of site to the mast and being sat in the window. Internet radio looks awesome but the pricetag less so (£159)
  20. This annoys me so much I thought I'd share the rant - so many companies try to fob you off!! Buying over the internet/mail order, etc., you can cancel your order and return your purchases 7 days after receipt. Follow their return procedure or email them to let them know (not phone). You can return without giving ANY reason, other than rejected under Distance Selling procedures. You DO NOT have to return the item in the packaging, accompanying it is fine. It DOESN'T have to be returned unopened, you can try it out. They CAN'T charge you a restocking fee. They MUST refund your postage. However, you must take reasonable care of the object. You pay return postage - if you don't return it they can claim back the costs to retrieve item. Full details in a guide for businesses can be found HERE Amazon sellers are usually a bit iffy although those purchases are backed by Amazon if problems arise.
  21. We don't eat out much partly as gluten free food is a concern. Havley cafe and Olive Tree have GF options and knowledgeable staff. Perhaps Flames owner can comment as to any GF food and GF awareness training his staff have been given? Thanks
  22. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_%28optical_phenomenon%29 When the halo is not all the way round, you see the side bits, called sundogs. I've often seen these here, usually when there is high milky cloud around the sun. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog
  23. Saw them on the way home from the pub. Didn't notice the cold though.. Liquid insulation
