The sky at night (meteors, Iridium flares, the moon)
DizzyKipper replied to Colin's topic in Science & Technology
my sky is clear overhead but cloudy on northern horizon :'( Will check later nooo I can see it!! faint horizontal white bands flashing upward and white streaks in a pale glow First time I've ever seen it If you going to watch outdoors... wrap up well, it's freeeeeezing!! -
For the town yes, for rural areas turn them all off! (thanks mods for the merge, didn't see this old one)
-
I can see an orange glow in a few places in the distance from the road/street lights, and the farm buildings (no animals in them) have lights on outside all night! Even the houses around leave security lights on. Is this endemic to Shetland? I realise some lucky folk will be out of site from other houses, but even in the sticks I have to block lights to see the stars (*** mod - merged ***)

Field fencing
DizzyKipper replied to DizzyKipper's topic in Agriculture / Self Sufficiency / Gardening / Pets
Hmm well I think the famers round me missed that bit of the lesson because it's 90% sheep and 3 lines of wire. What you say makes perfect sense, as it's not unusual to see the sheep in the wrong places -
Went for a walk on monday... places I wanted to get to were impossible due to the fencing to keep the sheep where they are supposed to be. Anyway I wondering why there are three lines of wire stretched between the posts, with the top one barbed wire? I mean I can see why the wire is there, being a cost effective why to (try to) keep the sheep in but why barbed wire? Surely if the sheep are going jump, they would just jump and not think "whooaaabaaa I'd baaaatter not jump that in case I get by fleece caught up".

Shifting to european time?
DizzyKipper replied to DizzyKipper's topic in National & International News
Dizzykipper; doesn't rise 'til 9.09am now. If this goes ahead it'll be after 10am before it rises in the midst of winter hmm think my watch is wrong then 10am is dreadful, really bad. -

Plusnet is owned by BT, not sure if it was always so, but the bits you notice are all different. UK call centres, different pricing structure, different data prioritisation, etc. They seem to have their own way of doing stuff.

I like Plusnet. I have 80Gb per month (new package is 60Gb), though I've never used more than 20Gb. You can see how much you have used on Plusnet as well for last 4 weeks, and previously months. It's unlimited usage on off peak. Static IP is free, customer service is good, user tools good. It's not for people who want to do file sharing in peak time though. Priorty goes to real time applications such as gaming and VOIP, unless you pay for the top package which is line speed on everything, but has a lower download limit. For a gamer/surfer like me it's perfect. Only outages are from BT. BTW if you wanted to monitor your connection, I've used NetMeter. Lots of options in it. If you leave it on, and it gathers data, it will predict your usage too, as well as give you a monthly report. The real time graph is interesting too. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Network-Tools/Bandwidth-Tools/NetMeter.shtml

Tesco home delivery service
DizzyKipper replied to Silvercloud's topic in Anything & Everything Else
Nice to see it back. I did go to Mainlands store, but they said they don't deliver unless across the road from them I was pleased at the range of stuff they had though, will go again. -
Don't apologise, as long as it's understandable that's all that matters. As lamentable as the decline in English standards are, this is a community forum not a university dissertation, and I don't think anyone should be hauled in by the grammar police (no offence poseidon ). Just my humble opinion.

Tesco home delivery service
DizzyKipper replied to Silvercloud's topic in Anything & Everything Else
That is what I meant about the chicken and the egg The idea is you ring the customer service desk at least the day before, to make sure they have a driver available (and with sufficient notice there usually is). Then you go in, do all your shopping by 1pm, and Tesco drop it off sometime in the afternoon. It isn't like down south where you book a delivery slot. That is why Tesco are supposed to deliver. When they took over from Somerfield, they had to commit to continuing the home delivery. When it works, it works well. Unfortunately the van breaks down. I don't know whether the conspiracy theories are true or not. -

The nice driver(s) work in the store when not driving. Enforcement by SIC would be nice but, as you say, rather unlikely... The feeling I got from the manager was they would do more if there was the interest, but demand was lacklustre. Chicken and egg situation I guess. -

DizzyKipper replied to Silvercloud's topic in Anything & Everything Else
I've spoken about the Tesco delivery service before, on this thread Manager told us that they were not allowed to have any advertising on the van. I got the feeling they would do more, although I don't see why they don't advertise it in store, and in the paper (unless this was banned also). We tried to get a delivery recently but were also told about the windscreen. They won't get two vans, it would be a waste of resources. We are visiting our local store this week, but still a delivery from Tesco would be nice Getting frustrated at the customer service staff won't help. I don't know what happened to the windscreen, I don't know why it takes so long to fix it. I just don't want all the negativity to make Tesco try and have the delivery requirement removed... as then we would be in trouble! -
Why does no one go to church??
DizzyKipper replied to Rourkes Drift's topic in Anything & Everything Else
I have a friend down south, she is quite religious - goes to church every Sunday, Bible reading, etc. She is very happy, has great social life, great friends and she is really happy with what she believes in. I would love to believe something so profoundly and unquestioningly, to be happy and fulfilled like that. Guess my brain isn't wired like that I have too many questions, I guess I just don't have 'faith'. This topic seesm to be: 'what do you think about religion' -
A spa for fishes? An aquarium with extra bubbles??

True indeed, though BBC Scotland does have Lerwick on its map with one symbol that covers all of us; which is why I like the new beta site, it's more specific. The wind gust info is especially handy. 35mph is one thing, 35mph with gust of 75mph is quite another!!
-
9 sets of data for Shetland, has got to be better than assuming that everyone has the same weather as Lerwick If you click on the weather stations and click OK, you get even more info Note it is still in beta though.
