Litter holes! and dog mess

Listening to the wind right now, rattling the roof, I decided to check the weather. Normally, I check BBC, Fair Isle, and Met Office. The Met office has a new beta page. You can zoom in to Shetland and see the data from several stations. I have to say that this is more accurate it seems to me than the others, which aren't picking up the gusts that I have right now! http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/pws/invent/weathermap/

^ yes! that too!

Regarding indication at roundabouts (and junctions)... I hate drivers who do not indicate for the benefit of pedestrians, two-legged travellers like to know where you are going as well!! Saves being squashed...

Rhododendrons
DizzyKipper replied to DizzyKipper's topic in Agriculture / Self Sufficiency / Gardening / Pets
Thanks for your comments and lovely pics Graeme_Storey. Girzie, do you have another name for the daisy bush? We have a big Fuschia megallanica and a Ribes flowering currant but the leaves tend to get burnt by the wind above the 4ft wall :'( -
I know they are OK for acid soil, but would they survive up here with the weather conditions? We're looking for shrubs to help act as windbreaks. Thanks.

Oo that looks fun

Glad to report mine is good now too, but this isn't the first time with a latency problem... As for the snow these past couple of days, well it was fine in December, don't recall any problems...

Looks like Sumburgh and Lerwick messed up then.
-
you are on Lerwick exchange then
-
What exchange are you? I'm talking to Plusnet tech on their forums...

Quick edit! This is a reply to QuackQuack pretty rubbish Using WinMTR I would suggest changing the interval to 5, in the options. The numbers refer to the packets of data that are sent from you to your destination, in our case the BBC. The journey goes in 'hops' from your computer to different computers and datacentres along the way. Simply, the number on the right hand side gives you how long a packet of info takes to get to that particular computer on the way. For me it's usually about 60ms on each hop. The best average and worst are self explanatory. The % is the percentage packet loss you have... i.e. packets you Sent which never got to their destination, that were not Received. Note if a node is down, say a datacentre is compromised, everything after that hop will be 100% packet loss (o received). If one hop is 0 received but the ones after it are fine, then the computer/datacentre has most likely been told not to respond to ping requests, and is nothing to worry about. Probably someone has written a better explanation in the time I have written this! Usually a router power off for 30 mins fixes this, but not today
-
Had some high ping issues recently but this takes the biscuit! Earlier it was 3.5 secs... I have turned off the router for 30 mins, and this is what i have now... |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | WinMTR statistics | | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | 192.168.2.10 - 0 | 136 | 136 | 0 | 4 | 63 | 16 | | lo0-central1.ptn-ag02.plus.net - 0 | 136 | 136 | 625 | 1342 | 2016 | 1109 | | gi2-12-212.ptn-gw02.plus.net - 1 | 136 | 135 | 625 | 1346 | 1984 | 890 | | po4.ptn-gw01.plus.net - 1 | 136 | 135 | 625 | 1347 | 1969 | 890 | | po6.thn-gw1.plus.net - 0 | 135 | 135 | 640 | 1348 | 2016 | 968 | | po4.thn-gw2.plus.net - 0 | 135 | 135 | 594 | 1346 | 1984 | 984 | | rt0.thdo.bbc.co.uk - 0 | 135 | 135 | 594 | 1356 | 2000 | 1015 | | 212.58.238.133 - 0 | 135 | 135 | 609 | 1344 | 2016 | 1062 | | virtual-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk - 0 | 135 | 135 | 578 | 1337 | 2016 | 1032 | |________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| WinMTR - 0.8. The sky at night (meteors, Iridium flares, the moon)
DizzyKipper replied to Colin's topic in Science & Technology
They were a present yonks ago, which were got to view stars rather than terrestrial viewing. The stars are sharp, can see doubles and so on that aren't visible with naked eye viewing, the odd fuzzy galaxy, nice pleiades and Sirius is extra pretty, but nothing more really. -

My bins 10x50 are a source of disappointment... I just get bigger blobs. Certainly no moons of Jupiter... Unfortunately Santa won't be giving me a nice reflector for Xmas -

Jupiter is in Pisces in the south at 6pm. Venus is SSE in Libra 6am -
I try not to use co-op toilets if I'm honest. Most of the time they are not that nice. Toll Clock early in the morning are clean and tidy, I don't know about after 11ish. They look a bit tired and outdated compared to the town centre ones which are great, although the fact that the cubicle doors open outward always seems strange and slightly unnerving. I wish also the frosted door would be closed not wedged open... but they always clean in the morning at least. When I came to Shetland on a visit a few years ago, we went to Meal beach in February, and I was surprised to find the public loo open, clean, stocked with paper and next to no graffiti. Leebitton too. You wouldn't get that down south. At the very least I would have thought they would be shut up for the winter! Was a pleasant surprise.

I had a great view while waiting at the bus stop. Was all red/brown for me. -
I use a mix, I use inches and centimetres, usually refer to height in feet and weight in stone. Use miles not kilometres, of course... Since this topic is about temps... when I was young my parents used Fahrenheit, but we both now use Centigrade... And it's cold and frosty here in south mainland...

Most manufacturers do a 'new to GF' type pack you can get for free. If you don't mind mail order and have money to burn, there are nice things out there, inc savoury items, taht aren't produced locally to my (limited) knowledge. There is some stuff which is nicer than ordinary... the battenburg cake from Lifestyle is lovely, really thick moist marzipan etc, beats Mr Kipling any day of the week. They do crumpets and cornish pasties etc, but they do cost more and you have to get at least 6 items per delivery. If you cut out most of the convenience and cook for yourself it's not too hard. Scoop sell GF worcestershire sauce.

well it's great not to have to wait by the side of the road for ages being soaked by passing vehicles... Big plus over down south
-
Isn't it great how fast they change?
