Earwigs/Forky tails
DizzyKipper replied to Marooned in Maywick's topic in Agriculture / Self Sufficiency / Gardening / Pets
what's a forky tail? -
Seems to be fixed! 3 cheers for Scottish water!
-
Anyone know where the water problem is in Dunrossness? Nice lady at Scottish Water says lots of people have been ringing up when I rang at about 4pm. She thought it would be fixed by tonight but obviously couldn't give any guarantees as the repair guy hadn't got to the site. I assume they're sending someone from Lerwick... I've seen no vans anywhere back along my road towards the A970, so it must be a fairly big pipe? Their code of practice says they should fix a mains burst in 12 hours and a strategic mains pipe in 48hrs. 48hrs?? Think I might need to flush the toilet before then

I'll tell him he's a plonker then Good luck

Modern art pipe near Lerwick Hotel?
DizzyKipper replied to DizzyKipper's topic in Anything & Everything Else
oops yeah, thought it didn't sound quite sound right. Link's broken, think it should be CLICK ME Thanks for the answer peeps! -
The computer memory contents is lost everytime you turn your computer off, it doesn't store info. That is on the hard drive. You might be able to retrieve it from your recycle bin. Have you looked there? You can right click and then restore it. If you have deleted it from the recycle bin or it was too big a file to go there and was 'permanently deleted', there are programs you can use to retrieve it, if it hasn't been overwritten on your hard drive. Maybe some other people can suggest a good program. If it has been overwritten it is possible but more difficult and potentially expensive to retrieve.

Sorry MJ I deleted that post before you replied after clicking the link I have dutch friends but not near there - I've left a message, to see if they know of any brands suitable. update, first dutchie says he doesn't drink bottled water as the tap water if fine... He did say and that's about it. I'll keep asking around.

I have walked up from town to LBC a good few times and after the Lerwick Hotel passed a tall ermm pipe thingy on the left, painted white. Does it actually have a function or is/was it an attempt at some modern art statement?

Pet Insurance
DizzyKipper replied to muckleflugga's topic in Agriculture / Self Sufficiency / Gardening / Pets
Have you tried Greenbee? http://www.greenbee.com/pet-insurance I use them. Never had to claim fortunately, but deffo cheaper than PetPlan. -
something you might like to consider... http://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-iplate---bt-broadband-accelerator-58LT.html Deffo helped my connection, and those I've recommended it to have also been pleased with it. It's included as standard on new line installations (the split master socket with Openreach logo). If you have a line running across your master socket, without the Openreach logo, you can fit this. It improves line qualtity even if you don't have extension wiring. If you have an old box with a hole in the middle and no line across, you'll have to pay for a new master socket instead, from BT. It's only a few pounds, definitely worth giving it a go.

Mobile phone signal and service (coverage, contract, 3G etc)
DizzyKipper replied to Fifi's topic in Science & Technology
[thx for the topic merge, must've been blind not to see this one!] I don't know how they can say the mast above Lerwick has a problem as I had a signal there on Saturday. From the link below, the nearest Orange mast seems to be on Bressay. With regard to the call centre staff, I was told a while back that there are always supervisors available, since not having any would be breaking some requirement (health and safety?). Ask if one is available and if they say no ask for their name, dept and manager, and then tell them you'll pass the matter on. Probably get to talk to someone then Still no signal from Scousburgh. You might find this site interesting http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ Base stations show at the 500m scale but better zoomed into 100m. change the 'click' to base info and click on them for some info.- 378 replies

Mobile phone signal and service (coverage, contract, 3G etc)
DizzyKipper replied to Fifi's topic in Science & Technology
Hi, I normally get 4 bars in dunrossness from the orange transmitter on the hill above Scousburgh. Anyone else lost their signal? Or is it my phone :'( I know most people don't use Orange, but it's Ok for me. Normally! If it *is* an Orange fault, any ideas how long mobile companies take to fix things like this here? Thanks (***Mod Edit - Merged with existing thread***)- 378 replies

Shetland Wren chicks
DizzyKipper replied to Frances144's topic in Agriculture / Self Sufficiency / Gardening / Pets
awww lovely! -
Kind of a cryptic title for which I apologise, but I shall explain. A Dutch friend of mine lives in Dronten in Holland. Whilst mooching about on google maps I noticed a road name... De Shetlander. Oooo! My excitement at finding some lost Shetland - Holland link diminished when I noticed alongside it De Connemara, De Welsh, Da Arabiar and Da Halflinger. Guess this is the equine quarter Click me

@ Chrish yes, I have no problem with youtube, iPlayer etc in normal times. Plusnet basically do two things. They make some activites more important than others so at busy times 'time critical' things have priority if needed. VOIP and gaming are the most important. Secondly, depending on the package you pick they may limit your speed at different times of day. See these pages to see how it might affect you. Prioritisation: http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/traffic_prioritisation.shtml Rate limiting: http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/download_speeds.shtml hope that helps

Well it did run away in the end.

It was shaking and scared but didn't seem to want to leave. Or it was warn out after trashing the place. Maybe it was poorly, I don't know but we didn't hurt it. Having just read the other topic, I think maybe it *was* ill... just a foot away and it didn't scrabble to get away or hiss?/scratch/bite or anything. Seeing as they are supposedly so vicious, I'm more concerned about the cats!

Visitor this morning in the greenhouse... http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w170/MCDizzyKipper/singles/polecat.jpg Are polecats common in Shetland? He/she has upturned pots, generally had a good time and isn't in a hurry to leave! (***Mod Edit - Merged to existing thread***)
