  1. Hurray! Signed up! Now we beat Argyll and Bute!
  2. She would have preferred the stuff reused, hence the contact with Scrapstore, but now she is just after the space, and doesn't like the clutter. The house was empty for some time before it was bought, and it was just stuff in the house, plus a few bits we had to bring when we moved, and never intended to keep. The furniture was some we had to unscrew and in one case, break, to remove from the house, but it is not reusable. The fridge was never tested fully (but the light works), but the washing/dryer was used until hers was plumbed in, but it tripped the main switch. I will ask Appliance Rescue about it but they may not want to travel so far. There are a couple of 14" TVs and a nice little microwave which *could* indeed go on Shetlink classifieds, however she is so fed up with all the stuff now, which is both in the house, a little outside and piled high in the garage that whoever it was would a) have to be quick, and be willing to drive down to dunrossness for them If all else fails, does any one know of a nice strong man with a nice strong van? Off to take the pics for the classifieds... update! wow! microwave and fridge gone already
  3. Hello, my Mum needs to move some stuff, including carpets, washing machine, fridge, broken furniture etc. Most was in the house when it was bought. From what I can make out, there won't be another community skip until June, and anyway, it won't take the electrical items even if we could carry them, which we can't, and we don't drive. I tried Shetland Scrapstore, but they apologised and said they don't have any room atm. She tried the council, who as far as I can make out from their website, should take the fridge away for free and charge for the rest. They can't do it for weeks as they are delivering wheely bins. Anyone any ideas? I know it's free to take rubbish to the dumpy place (not entirely sure where it is), it's just getting it there.
  4. just got my net connection, had it for about 2 weeks. I'm using Plusnet, on their 1 month contract, so i could easily change it if it was rubbish. I went with them as they said they were particularly good at sorting problems. I live 2 miles from the Sumburgh exchange, I was supposed to get 4mb but I appear to get 6mb. No disconnections yet. I've added about 30-40ms to my ping as far as gaming goes since moving to Shetland, but it doesn't make things unplayable, 70-80ms in cod4. A few days ago I installed the BT iplate. It might help some people? If you have a master socket with a line across and an Openreach logo, you already have the iplate filter installed. If you have a line across and any other logo, you should be able to put the filter in yourself, takes 2 mins - easy! If you don't have a line across your socket, just a hole in the middle for the phone wire, then unless you know a friendly BT openreach guy it's likely to cost you £140 for a callout to have it changed (unless they find a fault on the line). The iplate is cheap, although you pay more for postage i think for the benefits it's worth it. Even with no extensions it's supposed to help you. Read all the reviews. 5. Sorry for the delay in replying - have moved and got my hands on it! The model number is stamped inside one of the doors, and is an oil converted 217B. It idles at 150 deg C but we can't get it above 175, even with the control knob set to max, and the 'iron curtains' set in any position... there is one horizontally under the hob and two vertically between the flames and the oven. Any ideas please?
  6. shetlandpeat... Good luck on having them reply to you, I did that ages ago and have heard nothing Ghostrider... the firebox is next to the watertank, so that makes sense! I will do some more digging on the model Malcolm suggested, is yours oil? Thanks
  7. Hello, the 'supporting local vets issue' aside, I order my 'prescription diet' cat food online, as well as the monthly worm/flea treatments etc. The vet markups on prescription food - which isn't prescription only at all - is usually a lot, and the bigger sacks are a little large to carry on the bus The place I use is Bestpet Pharmacy, which as its name suggests does do prescription items as well, you just have to print off the prescription and give it to the vet - if they charge you for this, BestPet will give you £5 towards it. Anyway, cost of small prescription items is free, orders over £60 are also free, which covers the 2 bags of cat food for me I placed my first order since coming to Shetland a couple of weeks or so ago, and yes it was delivered here by FedEx/Streamline. It was a bit late, but I didn't know if it was due to the fewer ferries and snow... Not quite sure what happened there? Anyway I was pretty impressed I can still get the cat food and stuff delivered here, and still free! Would definitely recommend them. Oh yeah the webby, nearly forgot! http://www.bestpetpharmacy.co.uk/ BTW I think that N A Kays Horticultural has gone out of business... site no longer works and Google has a few pages saying they have gone out of business... mods might want to update the first post. [mod note - done ]
  8. @ Malcolm, the oven dial and flue seem to be on the other side to my pic, dunno how much of a difference that makes. Also there is no manual for the 355S, only for the multifuel one? so I can't check on that either. Good news on people to service it Will check those out, maybe I can direct them to the picture as well! Gets me a step closer... thanks all.
  9. Hello, can you identify this Rayburn? I have looked at the Aga-Rayburn site and I can't find it An image search on Google gives me this one that looks the same as mine, which says it's a Heatranger, any idea what model? http://www.wenlock-stoves.co.uk/rayburn.html It's oil fired btw. Also, I'm sure there are many Rayburns on Shetland, who do you get to service them/turn them on? I've been told the only engineer lives on Orkney? I know nothing about them - I can get the manual from the Rayburn webby, *when* I know the model... Thanks in advance
  10. Sounds good though not being in Shetland I don't *actually* know where the police station is Any chance of a map link? or I guess I could stop being lazy and Google it... OK 2.6km!! nice Although, that house will probably be gone by the time we sell thins one :'(
  11. hi, still looking for a house, big must-have is broadband... So what is it like in Quendale, esp Ringasta? From the phone number I have it says 2.5Mb on ADSL Max, 4Mb via the postcode (less accurate). That's good, but the house is 6.2km from Sumburgh airport. That's a bit of a guess, I'm not sure where the Sumburgh exchange actually is. Any ideas? Anyway, how can it get ADSL Max at such a distance? Thanks
  12. @ Sheepshagger No particular ties here, and my sister and her family live on Shetland. @ Shetlander When we decided to move, it was pretty much a given it would have to be on a regular bus route or at least in a village with shop(s). West Sandwick was a bit of a push tbh, but we liked the house so it was worth investigating.
  13. Is that reflected across Shetland do you know? or just your exchange?
  14. Hmmm that's given us a lot to think about. Thanks for your input
  15. -:Uis:- I'm with pipex (unlimited) now, it got better with Tiscali, no complaints at all. I know I'll have to change though. There are 'gaming' ISPs which offer one month periods instead of twelve months, dunno if they are any good. Gaming doesn't need high bandwidth and I don't d/l films or anything. Mind you I think iPlayer needs 2Mb? Here I get ~60ms ping cod4 and ~30-40ms Mohaa. I'm connected 8Mb at exchange, BT says i'm supposed to get 6.5Mb but it's more like 4-5Mb. I don't really get hung up on it, as long as it connects and I can do what I want i'm not bothered whether it's 3 or 8Mb. Anyway, I look forward to your feedback on Plusnet, thx.
  16. Guess it's too impractical then
  17. And... you can't get much shopping on push bike
  18. Thanks for your reply, not quite what I was hoping for. Learning to drive isn't an option unfortunately.
  19. oooo you have made my day!! Looking to move to Shetland... When I first posted here I asked about online gaming, pings etc. I've been to LAN parties here, am a clan member playing MOH:AA and COD4. Also my clan m8s said if I move to Shetland they would have the clan meetings here - dunno if it would ever happen - but if it did we could do clan vs Shetland Love it
  20. Been a while since I posted, and I'm back again! Still want to move to Shetland from down in England, but the house buying system in Bonnie Scotland makes it very difficult. Anyway, we're looking at a house in Yell, probably well known on there, in West Sandwick. The problem is, neither of us drive. So we're looking at the practicalities... What does West Sandwick have? I have looked around on the net and it only seems to have a garage. Not much good if we run out of milk! There is a shop near Ulsta ferry terminal, and all the facilities seem to be a Mid Yell. The bus timetable seems a little sparse. Seems there is a bus that gets you to Lerwick for mid morning, and you have a few hours before you get back and that's it. One bus only that comes through West Sandwick, so you have to get a bus on A968. Don't mind walking to it, but does that bus route also go to Mid Yell, or straight up to Gutcher? So, practically, should we be looking at West Sandwick if we don't have a car? We have to get shopping somehow... and I don't like the idea of being cut off. Oh and we did visit relatives in February and drove through Yell... we were the ones broken down, in the fog and gathering gloom, close to Ulsta. Maybe you passed us
  21. Wow is looks lovely with you... Is that YOU in the pub? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/b008w1rn.shtml?filter=txdate%3A27-01&filter=txslot%3Aafternoon&start=1&scope=iplayerlast7days&version_pid=b008w1qs viewable on BBC iPlayer for the next 6 days Not just about whales
  22. hello, I'm kinda interested in this still (I posted about gaming in Shetland a while back). It's looks like I'm coming as my bro is buying my house and his is on the market... It's funny that you watch your speed, I only check my connection to the exchange, which is normally 7616/448, ie the whole 8Mb deal, I never check the speed lol. As I will lose my emails and everything else when I move, and as Pipex is now part of Tiscali or something, I'm gonna ditch them and go with PlusNet, they have a gaming package I have also been staring many hours at Sam Knows http://www.samknows.com/broadband/index.php it tells me what exchanges are activated at what speed and even coverage for those exchanges, which is a little rudimentary but gives me some idea at least. The thought of no broadband... well... Can anyone have a look and confirm if it's correct? Thx muchly
  23. lol she isn't into beer at all. Thanks for your replies, it's seems it's not too bleak a picture Course i have no idea where these shops etc are, but if they are offering GF stuff it's worth paying a visit. Thanks a lot
  24. Hello My mum has Coeliac disease so she has to have gluten free food. We are moving to Shetland probably during the first half of this year and I'm hoping they will be other Coeliacs who can give her some advice. At the moment she receives fresh bread from my chemist. My sister asked for me when she visited Shetland last autumn, and not surprisingly it can't be delivered to Shetland. She can make my own bread using an automatic bread machine and the flour mixes, if she has too. I guess there is no GF bakery How is Shetland for any other GF food? How much do the local supermarkets carry for example? Do any coffeshops/restaurants etc carry anything GF? Any help and advice appreciated.
