  2. Well I'll be there!! Certainly beats the plethora of sad (IMHO) covers bands that seem to be the only thing you can go to see here at the moment - what has happened to local original bands being given a chance to play on the Islands?? Every day there seems to be more old **rt Blues covers bands churning out the same 12 bar stuff someone else wrote 50 years ago (just see another thread in this section for confirmation) & more importantly, young bands with far more talent than their setlists show playing here. Shetland used to have venues that offered an opportunity for originality to shine, now it seems unless they have "Born to be Wild" or "Teenage Kicks in their repertoire, they are unlikely to get a showcase. I am not saying if I am in favour or not of MAREEL, but if it gives an opportunity for the tremendous talent and diversity of local original acts to be seen and appreciated then bring it on A.S.A.P. And, eventually bringing this back on topic, SLF would be brilliant to see in a quality venue. (Mods-apologies for hi-jacking the thread with the rant in part of this post, but it really needs to be said)
  3. Surely between Shetland College and NAFC Marine Centre in Scalloway, both UHI Partner Institutions, there is more than enough access in Shetland. More than most areas in the Highlands & Islands.
  4. After being away all week and eating poor quality, overpriced food in hotels in Newcastle and Gatwick. It was a joy to go to the Spiggie Hotel last night and have a delicious plate of Kate's Monkfish Noodles. Fresh, beautifully cooked and full of flavour!! Along with a glass or two of well kept Real Ale who could ask for more?
  5. In another exciting leak from the seat of power of the newly declared Independent Ness Republic it can be revealed that the Foreign & Home Affairs and Merchant Navy Minister has just been promoted to Rear Admiral. In a newly released statement Rear Admiral Calamity says, "In recognition of my new rank, I am delighted to announce that as of today (Friday), I am making my personal vessel, the INRS "Unfloatable" available for Patrol and Fisheries Protection duties around the shores of our new Republic". Unfortunately the Rear Admiral has not been able to commence his duties within the INR as the South End Up-Helly-A Squad have assumed Border and Customs duties and refused to let him in after he gave his address as Cunninsburgh.
  6. The secret is out, Google weren't suppose to show that image until after the formal press release on Monday. Basically, the area south of Cunninsburgh formerly known as Da Sooth End will be known in future as the Independent Ness Republic. President "Flea" is pleased to announce that the new Ness Republic Foreign & Home Affairs and Merchant Navy Minister will be Captain Calamity who will be shortly making a statement confirming the amalgamation of Forvik into the new Republic. President"Flea" said, "I am very happy that Forvik has joined the Ness Republic, as the Captain brings a wealth of experience in successfully dealing with the Crown and UK Government. Also his tremendous sea-going experience and expertise will ensure successful trade links with the rest of the world - especially with regard to our future Lamb & Beef exports". Further statements from these two prominent figures will undoubtably follow.
  7. Lucky man. I would love to see them live again. Last time was at the Reading Festival in .... wait for it................... 1972. I have a few live videos, all excellent. Was it the same line-up?
  8. The Spiggie reopened last weekend. The new owner Keith has transformed the place and is a really nice welcoming host. The food was just as good if not better than before. Definately recommended. ':D'
