  1. ^ that would have made a great album cover for the Poison popcorn album "Hellery" which I'm not sure if anyone knows about, but I can confirm the good news that it IS available on the bandcamp website, for the bargain price of only six pounds sterling. Or if you really have spent all your wages on sinning, follow John Robertson when he advises the purchase of his fave tune "Can't" from the wonderful album " Hellery"- which is by Poison Popcorn, by the way. And available on bandcamp for only six poonds.
  2. Muddy Bay and the Deep Sea Rollers will be performing at the Sandwick social club on Saturday night. Also they will be playing LIVE! at Mareel on sunday evening. Should be a whole lot of fun, if you like that sort of thing. The band features the distinctive talents of Arthur Nicholson, who sings and plays guitar; Max Tyler (the prince of darkness) on keyboards and mischief; Brian Nicholson gets to flex his chops on the basso profundo electronique, and demonstrate his awareness of the funky -get down. This will be combined with a devastating shirt, no doubt about it. Little Robbie Walterson fae oot Wast is hoping to entertain y'all with his-Mmmmm, so very tasty-guitar skills and brooding good looks. Keeping his beats FRESH! behind them all will be an idiot from Wales. Look out for ridiculous drum faces when he's aboot. Take it easy, Blues fans, and be sure to have a splendid time at the Festy.
  3. I'm currently listening to poison Popcorn's album "Hellery", available on bandcamp for only six pounds. It's a bit special.
  4. nice gig last night, lads. i would advise all lovers of groovy rock 'n' roll to get doon to the legion for a top session tonight.
  5. "if only..." Aw, shucks. I mean I'm flattered an' all- but I'm in a relationship right now, but may reconsider if we can have bagpipes at the kirk. It's ok to dream, though, darling.
  6. Kavi Ugl wrote: "I hear nothing about what you're going to do to keep Shetland alive.... " Well, I'm doing plenty. What is it exactly that you would like us all to be doing? Bagpipe patrol, perhaps?
  7. This is pie in the sky. Spain wants Gibraltar back. Britain does not want to give it back. Spain does not get Gibraltar back. The end. Norway does not want Shetland "back". Britain does not want to give it back. Norway does not get Shetland back. The end. Argentina wants the Falklands back.... etc. Kavi Ugl says: "we, as a community, are not prepared to stand up and do anything about it..." I think that the reason for this is simple: "the community" is happy with the way things are. I don't know many Shetlanders who are pining for the fjords.
  8. http://ninospirelli.blogspot.com/2006/03/spaghetti-con-seagull-and-piseli.html Here you go, George. Buonissino! ??????????
  9. I held a copy of Fred Irvine's book in my hands yesterday, and one of the cartoons said that when shetland was gifted to the uk by the danes, Foula was not included. Fascinating!
  10. Jeepers creepers I have just seen this woman and her band on the red button. Best thing I've seen in ages and ages. Have that Beyonce and Winehouse! Best rhythm section in the land I reckon.
  11. ...Hang on a mo..... ....let me check..... Hmmmm. Well, a little bit might be Lenny. I come to hengland in aaaaaahhhhhmmmmmmm. In a bowat. And now, a quick look at de weddar.....
  12. As i said , no slur on you crofter. My questions are the letters before the question marks.
  13. Cool. I thought that was a point the detractors had picked up on. Anyway, that is my quibble. As always(and this is in no way a slur on you, crofter),my questions remain unanswered. Bitch all you like mofos, even if you refuse to spend your money or time making Mareel a sucess, I have a feeling that when things get going some of you may have to eat humble pie. If I am the one eating pie, then shame on you. And all your children.
  14. Those of you who have been following this tired thread may have noticed that I have been rather quiet about this subject of late. i don't know if Mareel will rake in millions of pounds or require cash for whatever. I do know that most buildings are ugly and take a long time to finish. I don't care if it is ugly- this is one building where the beauty lies on the inside. I agree with a previous poster that Shetland is getting very, very boring. Mareel may stop some of the young people leaving, by providing them with an opportunity to learn about what they want to learn about without having to leave Shetland. The tone of some of the negative posters seems to be -"if you want to learn abooit stuff lik dat, den why does du not farkoff sooth onywye, du's not learning worthwhile things lik croftin' an' fishin'. Du kens?" Personally , I think it bad judgement to have sited it so near the waterline, but then, who knew 17 years ago that sea levels were set to rise so much? Or that the farking tories would get back in? I work from dawn till beyond dusk at a manual labouring job, and dammit, I want to watch a fillum now and again. I also want to see top quality live music other than the fiddle-de dee staple which seems to be the benchmark up here. I ain't no white collar wahtever that guy said. I also want the local kids to become the hairstyles of tomorrow. Once they're gone, they're gone, and they won't come back except for xmas and when they've run out of money/split up with girl/ gotten fed up of trees and the delights of city life. Could all of you numbskulls just stfu and wait until the damn venue is built and you have supported it before claiming to "ken" how things are gonna be? It might not work, but then, your marriage/ business/holiday plans might not work either. What makes you so sure? I don't hear much naysaying from folk who actually work in the entertainment industry, and let us not forget that the entertainment industry is just that- an industry. And one which is probably doing better than yours, whatever that may be.
  15. ^an excellent point Jaydee. I was at the Nesting regatta today, and several times heard regret expressed that the tourists knew nothing of it. They would have had a smashing time, and could have boosted Nesting into the cultural stratosphere. It would be great if there were more opportunities for local exponents of culture to demonstrate this wonderful land in action for people who have shelled out a lot of cash to be entertained. Leaflets, a smiley liason type and a couple of busses could have added to their Shetland experience immensely, and earned folk a few quid too. I reckon.
  16. A couple of years ago there would occasionally be someone who played the pipes on a sunday morning somewhere near Spiggie loch. Even though the sound would wake me from a deep sleep-as did the call to prayer at half past sillyo'clock when in Africa- I could not find the will to be annoyed by it, even when the sound intruded into a late night recording session and ended up all over the drum track. It's nice to be welcomed ashore, doesn't matter if it is a mariachi band or a full-on calypso experience. Lerwick can be a drab, grey little town sometimes. As Withnail almost said -"someone should install a jukebox in here, liven you stiffs up a bit."
  17. "...That can't be the bagpipes, surely?..." This thread is hillarious. I can't believe that an employee was asked who "requested" it. Fabulously entertaining.
  18. ^^LMDO and the Jack Schitt one is still making us laugh! Brilliant! Thanks for all your jokes Malcolm!
  19. ...are playing TONIGHT at the Mid Brae Inn. A groovy new blues band, playing some uptempo, feelgood classics featuring the mighty Brian Nicholson. Orange whip? Orange whip? Three Orange whips!
  20. ^That sort of thing would NEVER happen in Norway.
  21. Brilliant perhaps in terms of personal salesmanship, but I can't see exactly how this helped the country she was supposed to be running. I just don't like the creature. Never have, never will.
