  1. Is it a talktalk problem? looking at the results above. no point in me contacting them, although I've been known to pay the bill, they wont speak to me other than to take my money as I'm not the account holder.
  2. If you get all the freeview channels, you should be able to get DAB, we do, was thinking your more direct line of sight to Bressay than we are. Weather can effect the signal, but the DAB channels are very limited, not tried to see what we can get other than 4extra.
  3. On a different supply today, come about 6.30pm all of a sudden grinding. http://www.speedtest.net/result/2318426201.png Checked at home on Orange (across the road, same exchange, distance etc) no problem?
  4. Oh look a builder (well chippie), thank you for putting in your expert knowledge just watch the bickering continue regardless. I have been trying to figure it out has the OP actually got the answer to their original question?
  5. You forgot to mention teenagers, it's amazing how much the lecky bill goes up once each one hits about 12, plus I assume you have lights in out buildings, so your's will be a bit higher than folks in a 3bed with young children in a village or town. Oh the days of paying 40quid a month for gas/electric for a small top floor flat...
  6. wow shetlink is slow tonight. Okay 1st hydro can supply you for free one of those electricity use meter thingies that the government wants everyone to use to help manage their energy use. They can help you figure out where all the lecky is going. http://www.hydro.co.uk/iplan/ 2nd the CoOp today droped their energy prices, unlike the telephone thing being with a different "energy supplier" should mean no disadvantage. Same power, same supply route etc just cheaper bills http://www.cooperativeenergy.coop/ there are other suppliers out there, but with the 2-4p difference per unit it soon adds up. hydro http://www.hydro.co.uk/OurPrices/ coop http://www.cooperativeenergy.coop/assets/documents/price-list.pdf
  7. Because I've never worked anywhere that hasn't passed. Known folk fined for silly things but they've all passed. Butchers are different, it can be as little as the inspector not liking wooden boards, but places serving food... I'd be a little concerned. But not seen any improvement needed on any where I'd eat in anyway.
  8. Nup, I'd be a little concerned if a place serving food ready to eat "needs improvement".
  9. http://www.speedtest.net/result/2260703248.png Not been the same since BT effed up the line, but this is seriously taking the P
  10. SP sometimes you really do appear to have NO CLUE It really is fine for you in big city land tae give out advice to those of us who do not have access to your modern comforts. One employer who you know really well gave me a warning for not coming in when the road was closed. If I were to refuse to come in because of a little ice/snow? Just glad I'm not one of the parents weighing up whether or not to send my child to school on untreated roads this winter.
  11. All 19 passengers involved in the ditched helicopter are 'Safe and well' onboard the oil tanker 'Nord Nightingale'. is the only bit over and above the Beeb's coverage I have
  12. ??? I'm shocked if it's contract phone and you completed the contract, then they have to unlock it for you? T-mobile never used to lock their contract phones, oh how things change. (oh wait, T-mob didn't lock their own phones, Tesco, phones4u etc do) They are the same company, just different "Brands" according to EE. Would be tempted to phone again, pointing out that as you completed the contract the phone belongs to you and that you'd like to be able to use your property, if they're not able to offer you a better deal than orange, then you'd like the unlock code. Or there's always virgin (same as T-mobile)
  13. dial 121 and ask? It's the same company now anyway?

    museum

obviously not tried to get any real information out of the tourist office recently. They still LIE to tourists, quite blatant lies, I feel sorry for those who haven't been lucky enough to be given true information elsewhere.
  15. Nice to know you live such a safe and cossetted life SP You were also not the young mum, who took her 8week old baby into town (after being told to come in) by public transport and wasted most of a day to find the station closed. I'm sure that should you need an OPEN station you wouldn't need to catch a boat or plane to get there. I'm sure you could find one within an hours drive.
  16. oh let me see, they're a public service? Maybe it's just because I have a teenage daughter, but all of a sudden town seem less of a safe place for her to be at weekends. Do they also have a map showing the route to the nearest phonebox to make the 999 call.
  17. A little confused, know someone who was told to come down to the police station today, and she's a little peeved to have dragged herself and small baby into town by public transport 1st thing this morning to find it closed. After a couple of return visits, a phone call was made to be told the station would be open again on Monday? http://northern.police.uk/Territories/shetland-contact-details.html The website still says 24hrs. I know there were threats to close it outside of office hours, but I thought a solution had been found. Unfortunately she's young enough she's not likely to put in a complaint and this won't have helped her distrust of our police force. Is it just this weekend or is the station closed every weekend?
  18. Sorry obviously this was the wrong place to ask this question, thank you for your well meaning replies. I was hoping that someone could put my mind at rest that this young person was an oversight and that things have changed since I was in a similar sort of situation.
  19. Obviously the JCH isn't an option for weekends, holidays etc. Not everyone has a family member willing to take them in, nor does it sort out the financial situation. The JCH is also only suitable for those attending AHS. If you've left with the clothes on your back there's obviously a bit more to worry about than just a roof over your head. I was kind of hoping that a secondary teacher or someone from the education dept could clarify.
  20. After hearing a story from my daughter I've been left with quite a quandary. What safe guards are in place for 15/16/17year olds who find themselves homeless while still trying to study? I know what's available in most local authorities, but not here, and it seems young folk here don't know what's available or how to access it. I'm sure that the school in question can possibly be quite so lacking in it's pastoral care that the child/young adult was treated the way the teen gossip says. So all you teachers out there, what happens when one of your pupils get thrown out of the their home & they want to finish their studies?

    rent rise

Not exactly an apples and apples comment, and not true anyway. Average Shetland rent is 61.04p per week which is above the national average of 56.94p but by no means highest (74.87p) When you consider you have zero chance of being put in a tower block or tenement the cost doesnt sound high vs the rest of the country. Its probably lower vs the same type of accomodation but its hard to dig into detailed statistics like that, you can see at a high level from gov figures though that 60% of Scotlands social housing is in flats whereas 15% of Shetlands social housing is in flats. Might not be the best info available but at least I tried rather than just spouting some nonsense under the caveat of "apparently" Apologies second highest in Scotland according to our MSP http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/5590-move-to-soften-housing-grant-blow Now that we no longer have to worry about losing the housing debt relief can we get a council tax rise?
  22. hairyian - it took me a while to figure out you were just winding me up, I mean surely you'd have noticed what's happening with the lines out west? I know Tavish & Marvin have had een or twa complaints. obviously being 2miles from the exchange, no there will be no need to be in with chocolate busicuts to hand as the exchange is next to the shop. I have internet, therefore can take calls online. As stated before BT have claimed responsibility for the fault being on their end (not our internal lines).

    rent rise

was amazed by how cheap social housing rents were south compared to up here, highest council rent in Scotland apparently.
  24. hairyian - Doesn't matter how many times you say it, it physically can't be done, the socket is boxed in. Not living where we can expect a constant power supply of course we have a corded phone. BT have claimed responsibility and we're on the list along with those being reconnected (after the lightening) on the 3rd. My original post about this was to find out if anyone else was effected.
