  1. Just had a look at the AIS and see that Kirkwall is getting visits from both Hjaltland and Hrossey tonight, one southbound and the other northbound. That has to be a first.
  2. 28 miles by road, but just 10 miles in a straight line.
  3. The tide in the north mouth can be pretty strong as it is, a causeway would make it much faster, possibly to the extent that it would be difficult for smaller boats to enter or leave against it. A bridge is the answer.
  4. Alas, the Lerwick bunker has gone ;-( http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/roc/db/989479736.html
  5. There's more info on 'secret' ROC bunkers here.. http://www.secretscotland.org.uk/index.php/Secrets/ROCPostMaps
  6. I have not noticed a smell from Heogan for years but it certainly used to be horrendous, with a very light north wind, not strong enough to blow it away, it could make your eyes water. You had to keep doors and windows firmly shut.
  7. I have him on 'ignore', one of the better features of the new format.
  8. Workin fine in de toon, nae recent problems.
  9. I wonder how the 'Creative Links Officer' and 'Volunteering Development Officer' manage to fill in their days ? Can't be much sweat broken there.
  10. Watching Hrossey on the AIS earlier, she took a route to Kirkwall I havn't noticed Northlink use before. Through North Sound then between Sanday and Eday before turning SW into Widefirth and KW. Presumably to avoid what must be really turbulent reflected waves to the East side of Orkney. That used to be the 'scenic route' in the old NofSO&SSCo. days. Remember it from coming home from Inter-Counties on the old Magnus.
  11. Yes, Thursday was the traditional day for weddings in Shetland.
  12. Local directory from the Shetland Times page lists 8 instructors. http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/directory/?directory-type=commercial&pagenum=0&dirname&address&category=Driving%20Instructors
  13. A friend on TT with no landline or BB for a few days has now had his calls diverted to his mobile number. Took a lot of effort on his part contacting a human, but got there in the end.
  14. loved this. "With Christmas upon us I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" with friends. Well two days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had a few beers followed by a couple of vodka tonics. Although feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be significantly over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab. Sure enough on the way home there was a police roadblock but since it was a cab they waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise, as I had never driven a cab before, I don't know where I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it."
  15. The debt does not lie with Holyrood, but with Westminster.
  16. Just waiting for business to pick up again, the other three boats can carry all the cargo needing moved at this time of year.
  17. There is a list of donors on the website on Muckle Joannie's link, just names, no amounts.
  18. I had a look at the ATOS website and the Shetland assessment centre is given as Market House, Market Street. Does part of NHS Shetland work from there ?
  19. Another vote for Canon, I have two, EOS400 with a battery grip and a Powershot, the memory cards and batteries are interchangeable between the two. The battery grip can also use 6x AA cells if you're really stuck and takes about 10 seconds to make the change as they're loaded in a cassette.
  20. Another plane load for the CO-OP & one for Tesco coming up later. What plane are the Co-op using for their deliveries? I'm guessing the one shown in stilldellin's photos in the 'whitna plane was yun' thread, loading into a Shetland Transport artic.
  21. The Co-op have had a planeload of fresh veg etc flown in this afternoon, now on sale. So not just Tesco sprootair.
  22. Don't think the Fair Isle is big enough to provide a lee on a night like this
