  1. ^ 4 x MAK 6M43 5400 KW each...four Big MaK’s...use an awful lot of fuel travelling at up to 24 knots (at this speed my estimated sailing time would be about 9 hours). Speed/fuel consumption @ 16 knots 20 metres /litre, @ 24 knots 10 metres/litre Figures from Northlink leaflet when the boats were new.
  2. Another similar page here http://www.flightradar24.com/
  3. There's a fuller version taken from one of Bobby Tulloch's books here.. http://www.davidkfaux.org/Eaglebairn.htm
  4. Customer asks the assistant if she has any Irish sausages. The assistant asks him if he's from Ireland. Being Irish he felt somewhat racially challenged and says "Excuse me! If I asked for Polish sausage would you ask if I was Polish?" "No" she says "And if asked I asked for chorizo would you ask if I was Spanish?" "No, I wouldn't" she says "And if I asked for Toulouse sausage would you ask if I was French?" "Definitely not" she says. "So just because I ask for Irish sausages why do you assume I'm Irish?" "Because this is Harry's" she says.
  5. Just shows how different our near neighbour is.. http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2012/10/a-trip-to-the-faroe-islands/100388/
  6. At first glance, I thought thus was going to be an advert for the Valhalla Brewery's "White Wife"
  7. Banks ? not according to http://www.bankholidays2012.co.uk/scottishbankholidays2012.html
  8. A priest was invited to attend a house party. Naturally, he was properly dressed and wearing his priest's collar. A little boy kept staring at him the entire evening. Finally, the priest asked the little boy what he was staring at. The little boy kept pointing to the priest's neck. When the priest finally realised what the boy was pointing at, he asked the lad, "Do you know why I am wearing that?" The boy nodded his head yes, and replied, "It kills fleas and ticks for up to three months"
  9. Yes, P & O's insurance company discovered that the charts of Mousa Sound were based on surveys almost 100 years old and decided they were not taking any chances. A new survey would be a fine job for Anglian Sovereign ?
  10. Type in your home post code in this advert, and keep an eye on the scenery at the end, cleverly done http://taxi.ba.com/
  11. A bit of lateral thinking required, hi-viz would be the best possible disguise
  12. Already mentioned in 'Stormshield Roof Coatings', further down the page. I saw them pressure-washing a roof where the next door house had a line of washing out (downwind).
  13. Certainly is a bit daft, elsewhere it's called 'Freecycle'.
  14. They did it regularly last summer too, good chance for visitors to see the cliffs and birds at Noss on a calm night.
  15. Norrona, on a cruise, is due in Lerwick tomorrow, 9th May at 7.30 am, just left Kirkwall. Don't know where she will berth though as Northlink will be using the ramp.
  16. Very gratifying to see how many of the new councillors have beards (8 of them I think) and that's just the men. I always think men with beards look so trustworthy.
  17. http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/4059-serco-take-ferry-contract-from-northlink.html Wonder how different it will be ?
  18. Fine if you 'do' Facebook, which I don't. Would it not be an idea to make it public, like the bird club has done ? http://www.facebook.com/natureinshetland
  19. It's nothing new, the same system was used at the last S.I.C. election.
  20. ^ Not strictly accurate, you don't 'buy' the berth, the berth is always the property of the marina; you give the marina an interest-free loan of however much it cost the marina to provide the berth and this 'deposit' stays with the marina until such time as you decide you no longer require the berth. At this time, when someone on the waiting list takes over the berth, your 'deposit' is returned in full. Annual charges are for membership, maintenance and insurance of the marina. Some berths may be available for short-term hire, usually when a boat is away or ashore for maintenance/repair.
  21. You will have to approach the individual marinas. The ones you mention are community marinas, run by local committees and have nothing to do with S.I.C. Ports and Harbours. Some details may be out of date, but there are contact numbers here.. http://shetlopedia.com/Category:Shetland_Marinas_and_Piers
  22. Wife texts husband on a cold winters morning: "Windows frozen." Husband texts back: "Pour some luke warm water over it." Wife texts back: "Computer completely ****ed now."
  23. A good reason to not complain about SIC ferries.. The Glenelg ferry running across Strome on Loch Carron plus the Vatersay Boys! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjX2Ay_qS_g&feature=related the turntable is manual and the ramp is"flexible" to match the concrete pier ! The Vatersay Boys are the best bit !
  24. Started too soon ! Should have waited until Bogel-day, 17th March, the traditional start of the crofting year. Although I'm sure that some years it was just a token start, scraping the rust off the spades etc. http://shetlopedia.com/Formerly_called_Merkis_days_or_Rets_o'_da_year Saw a hedgehog walk across the grass outside the house this evening, thought I was seeing things
  25. Shetland Catch is now partly owned by a Norwegian company, Austevoll Seafoods. Don't know who sold shares to let them in.
