Yes, it certainly rose and fell in the jar, and it multiplied. If you had too much it seemed to get a bit strong. That was when you spooned some out and either gave it away or dumped it. The 'bits' that rose and fell in the jar looked like tiny nobbly sponges and I suppose they were of a yeasty nature.
As to feeding it, I never actually did that but I think adding the treacle is correct and it had to be in a reasonably warm place or it stopped 'working'.
We used to run it through a tea strainer before drinking and it was about the colour of a medium strong tea (without the milk).

I see the SIC are consulting on whether the street should be car free for most of the day. Well they have made it people free and damn near shop free so I don't suppose car free will make much difference.

Living Lerwick should be closely following this thread to give themselves a wake up as to why the street is on it's knees - but alas i guess they haven't the time to follow it given the meetings they attend and various businesses they are fleecing for cash.

Lots of sound ideas on here that doesn't have to cost a business a grand or more to be a part of surely.

As iv'e said before Living Lerwick should be wound up, it's not fit for purpose.

The boycott was on the Shetland Times website. The SNP bad stuff is in every comment and letter emanating from "wir" Shetland, it seems to be their raison d'être.
As a Shetlander myself, when I hear the title "wir" Shetland getting bandied about I just assume it means me too, is this not the case?
If they were a true multi party, apolitical group campaigning for more powers for Shetland I would join in a heartbeat.
Sadly this group appears to be nothing more than another platform for anti SNP rants.

I wonder what happened to devolving powers to Shetland when he and his party were in power, first in Holyrood then in Westminster? Is it because you can promise all kinds of things when you know you have absolutely no chance of forming a government in Holyrood or Westminster?
I was absolutely disgusted watching decades of Liberal principles disappear in smoke with their seedy alliance with the Tories.
I don't believe a word of their "federal UK" stuff, they had a gilt edged opportunity to follow their principles and fight for a devo max option in the Scottish referendum and didn't grasp it.
They were given an opportunity by UK voters to govern in Westminster and blew it big time, the last election proves what the electorate think of LibDem promises.

This is one of the great problems of our time as I see it. At every level Government representatives, employees and officials are not held accountable for wasting public funds. In private business if employees squander vast sums they are disciplined or sacked, public money should be held under more scrutiny not less!

I hope that if Wir Shetlands campaign is a success and we can set up a new Government for Shetland then a large degree of accountability can be built in to the system, it is no less than the public deserve!

I believe that's where you are wrong hjasga, planning officials are not elected and it is them who have blocked this development. What a new Shetland Government would do differently would be up to them but I would hope that with more power to make a real difference and a more suitable local system tailored to our needs we would have better Government all round and the rural areas of Shetland would be valued.

Of course environmental policies have to be carefully considered but to reject this on that basis is, in my opinion, madness. There are many establishments in Shetland which necessitate a vehicle for every (or at least the vast majority) of customers. How many people walk to Busta or the Sumburgh Hotel for a meal for example? What about the people from the North who would go to this restaurant instead of driving to Lerwick, is that factored in?

It is not as if this would be in the middle of nowhere, it is located on one of Shetlands main transport arteries. The logic here is like saying you cannot have a restaurant on a motorway service station as it encourages people to drive to it from a nearby town!

Heimdal reacted to BGDDisco in Youth clubs
As I mind, growing up in Ollaberry, the Youth Club was very successful, and stood on its own feet. There was a nominal fee we each paid to get in, a tuck shop which turned out a reasonable profit that was fed straight back into the club. If we needed funds raised for extra play /sports equipment we would organise a sale of work or even a supper dance. If we had a special outing - we went to see Ghostbusters as I mind - we all chipped in a little extra that week. The book-keeping was open and transparent, I mind bairns counting up pennies and doing sums to work out how much more we needed to raise for the Up-Helly-Aa squad and so on, it was an education in small business management for us all too. Everyone locally was supportive of the club and we managed fine without needing funds from quangos or council. I reckon the parents saw it a very reasonably priced 'evening off from the kids'.

I agree it's all about money, the last Tory/Libdem government slashed Scotlands overall budget by 9% and the capital budget by 20% with further huge cuts planned by this Tory government.
The Scottish government is stuck between a rock and a hard place, any responsible government facing these devastating cuts has to balance the books somehow, efficiencies have to be found somewhere.
Amalgamation of Scotland's regional police forces was an obvious choice, after all the metropolitan police is a single police force policing several million people.
Personally I think the regional forces worked better but what would they have to cut to pay for it? Health? Education?
I find it a bit hypocritical hearing the Lib Dems and Tories complain about efficiencies made to Scotland's police force when they were responsible for the massive cuts that made the efficiencies necessary.
Another question regarding policing in Scotland, why is Police Scotland the only force in the United Kingdom deemed liable for VAT? It costs police Scotland £24 million annually, maybe that could pay for a bit of decentralisation.

The "Christmas Bonus" was originally an excellent idea and I believe was set up to benefit elderly Shetlanders who weren't benefiting directly from the new oil boom.

Sadly, the truth is that over recent years too many people who didn't need or deserve it were applying for the Christmas Bonus and getting it.  That's what has ruined it for everybody else.

I think there was a reason put forward recently that it had become unmanageable and I partly believe it

There are far too many irresponsible cat owners in this country, these animals are causing devastation among nesting birds, globally as well as nationally. Ask Chris Packham.

Ghufar, it's sad that you should have felt you had to come on here and defend your position. The glass houses belong to you and it is your business what you ask for or sell them to.

However, the points you have made may help ease the pain of some who make comments prior to knowing the full story.

As for the Bargain Centre, you, your father and your grandfather before him, have provided a great service over many years to us customers in Shetland. I have bought lots of small item and most of my furniture from you over the years and will continue to do so.

I worked with your Grandfather Wally Mohamad when he first arrived in Shetland and bought lot of clothes from him when he first opened his shop in Hancie Smiths old place. From that small beginnings your family, through hard work, have built up a good business, providing a great service to us all. Many thanks for that.

As for being a Shetlander, I always thought you were born here, but even if you weren't I think you have earned the title by now

When an economy drive is performed internally from the bottom up rather than the top down, and carried out by turkeys who won't vote for Christmas, you get what we've got, disproportionate service reductions to end users at the bottom of the pile, while the machine itself remains largely intact, the moreso the higher up its ranks you go, swallowing up an ever larger disproportionate percentage of overall running costs on account of the lower end output.

Few if any Councillors seem to have an original idea of their own any more, rather they proceed on the basis of either rubber stamping or rejecting whatever some "official" dreams up. That being the case, no "internal savings" review is ever going to be unbiased, objective or be taking in the whole of the "big picture".

Its going to take nothing short of an external review of the entire structure, procedures, working practices etc of the machine, with a view to centralising, streamlineing and maximising value for money, reporting back to elected members only to achive any real change of worth. What we have after recent exercises, and will continue to have until somebody bites the bullet, is folk paying the same in, getting steadily less out, and propping up a system that is full of un-necessary "work" which serves no other puprose than creating an illusion many seat polishers actually have a function, and paying them over the odds for the privilege.

I think the deleting had very little to do with the T&C's or one specific thread in particular, and had much to do with a bomb that's been ticking away for a very long time, and that thread just happened to be the one that broke the camel's back.
