  1. Iv'e seen one bike lashed to it so far in it's time erected, a roaring success i'd say. It's more a hazard for drunks stumbling out of the Thule tbh
  2. Living Lerwick i think most would agree are not fit for purpose - that cringe worthy video they released a while back said it all. Give the shop owners a break and stop fleecing them for fees that give zilch back in return. Who gives Living Lerwick the power to threaten a business who doesn't want to pay their charge? Are they the mafia in disguise?
  3. The "old" Country club now/was Jacky's cards is going to be converted to a.......Chinese! :/ I guess one more won't hurt
  4. The original ghost thread on here, happy reading! https://www.shetlink.com/index.php?/topic/274-ghost-stories/
  5. I think tunnels are the way forward if the North Isles are to prosper and thrive. Opportunities must be greater with a fixed link as this will make the island accessible 24/7, businesses can do their work unhindered by weather or mechanical issues, tourists can get to the Isles at any anytime making Yell and Unst far more attractive to visit. This sadly [tunnels] should have been built 30 odd years ago with on onset of North Sea oil, a huge opportunity was missed then to link the Isles. Constant dithering by many councils has lost so much time. Looking into the future you have to weigh up expenditure on terminals, ferries, not to mention fuel which is only going to rocket in price. Long term tunnels have to be the way ahead, it's really a no brainer frankly.
  6. Lerwick is crying out for an eatery that caters for families, where you can enjoy a good home cooked meal and a pint - it would make someone somewhere a splendid return.
  7. I look very much forward to the fabled knock on the door from the SIC assessment dude, whoever that may be - he/she better have a big furry rabbit to pull out of the hat to make our situation workable...
  8. Living Lerwick has since it's inception achieved next to nothing. It's basically a glorified talking shop, a back slapping kind of organisation, with no real structured plan of what they are trying to achieve. They have tried to mold the Town Centre into a cosmopolitan oasis akin a bit towards St. Tropez or somewhere chic, little tables laid out here and there encouraging people to drink and dine al-fresco. Well this isn't the South of France far from it, and as i see it the whole concept has gotten "lost" somewhere in the mix. The amount of infighting also doesn't breed confidence in an alliance that seems from my point of view to ask for lots (money) but gives you very little back in return.
  9. I'm maybe thick but what obligation does the SIC have to keep paying the rent? Surely as landlords SLAP are breaching the tenancy agreement by not providing a suitable building in a good state of repair. I hope the legal eagles no doubt on a hefty wedge themselves have a way of getting that money returned in the future. To think of care homes & schools having their budgets slashed, to chuck £536,000 away is nothing short of sickening. As to the new AHS it was certainly thrown up in a rush so lets hope it doesn't start falling apart bit by bit in the years to come.
  10. I'd heard the plastic lens covers haven't been kept clean, and this has contributed to the problem with the camera's. I guess Lerwick won't be appearing anytime soon on "Caught on Camera" They may as well have had a plod up on a watchtower akin to Baywatch with a pair o binoculars ! Complete shambles the whole project.
  11. And now their thinking to spend £700,000 plus on a "large shed" to collect, sort and store said waste, surely they can rent a LPA shed at Dales Voe to do the same job? Methinks there's more rubbish outside of the bin than in it...... The old system of colored bags seemed to do alright, the stuff was bagged and the re-cycling truck came and had it away, why complicate the whole process with thousands (and it will be at 2 per household) of wheelie bins loitering around all over the place, bonkers!
  12. Also forgot to add the Hub's closing down sale is in full swing. As for MJ's i feel for the staff at losing their jobs, especially at this time of year.
  13. So that's the esteemed Monterey Jack's gone down the kermit. Lerwick town centre will be like a ghost town if this rate of closures keeps up. Have to say that place didn't inspire for me, and it turns out others too.
  14. I think Lerwick to a degree has not really seen a vast increase in visits over the last 5 years that other ports have (Kirkwall being one) we average out 70 which although a decent haul is still far below other ports in and around Northern Europe. The flat rate of calls here i'm sure is down to a lack of a proper deep water berth for "mega liners" that disgorge 3-5,000 passengers on any given visit. So with that said i think there's scope to grow Lerwick's share more yet before any possible sanctions are imposed for limiting future numbers.
  15. Well that's the last liner been and gone for 2017, so in the end it was 10% of the original total that cancelled. Happily the port is going to dredge the approach channel and Mair's Pier to get some of these brutes alongside, something that's been needed for many years.
  16. I heard from a staff member the Co-op is having a huge refit in January, with expansion of the shop floor among some of the improvements. Tesco in my eyes have become hugely complacent, and have for a while now seemed to have taken islanders custom for granted. Co-op seems to be on the up, but what did the staff member do so wrong plook?
  17. This idea that Shetland health board is hard up and can't finance a new hospital make's me wonder why or indeed how other health boards miraculously come up with funds for new infrastructure? NHS Orkney are soon to enjoy a brand new state of the art Balfour hospital, so why can't we?
  18. Correction to my post above so we get 2 bins each, i thought it was only 1 . So that means 12 bins (six flats) on the pavement from next summer + the 1 we have now. They'll have to increase the width of the pavement at this rate as no sod will be able to walk on the damn thing for bins!
  19. If each household is to get a bin, then in my flat block for example you will have 7 bins vying for the 1 and only space currently available. It could make for some interesting times. Other than that your going to have at least 6 bins on the public pavement 24/7. There's no way around that as you can't block up a communal stairwell with bins for fire regulations. The Dutch actually pay out something like 10 cents per bottle at depositories around the country, hence they have one of Europe's highest recycling rates (around 64%).
  20. All this proposed recycled "matter" makes me wonder in the long term will there be enough refuse to keep the incinerator ticking over? As someone who lives in a block of flats with 5 other neighbors and one very overworked wheelie bin covering all six flats, i'm wondering how on earth a fortnightly uplift is going to be practicable for us.
  21. The thing is we know it's bad, they on the other hand are sadly in denial, that's the problem with this island, to many heads in the sand...literally!!
  22. I had contacted them about the website aswell and the reply I got was there are no plans to update the website in the foreseeable future due to financial constraints. Website's are expensive but I think iv'e seen sites with a beta setup that are better than the museum's one..
  23. The original complete 2017 list had 79 vessels due , we are now at 71, do the maths that's 8 cancelled. The latest to cancel Vision of the Seas was due on 26th August. The reason i got after searching a cruise forum was this.... Please be advised of a port change from Lerwick to Inverness/Loch Ness, Scotland on your upcoming cruise. This change is necessary as the pier construction in Lerwick will not be completed as scheduled and Vision of the Seas cannot be accommodated at this time. This is an utter lie, so the question remains, what is wrong with this place?. Is it the welcome, the product, or something more sinister?
