  1. Anyone have views on the chips from the Happy Haddock?. Some seem huge in the tray others small, or just crumbs. Perhaps it's a bad batch o tatties, but their quite poor in the last few weeks.
  2. I wonder if a student bar will be installed in the hostel?. After all what's one more drinking establishment among friends.
  3. At this moment in time what with a depressed oil sector, terrorist activity, and general unrest in the world markets would Scotland be at an advantage in stepping out on it's own?....my own personal thoughts are no. We as an independent nation would have to fund presumably our Defence - (Air Force, Navy, Army), Education, for our kids, Health funding for an ever increasing elderly population, Transport and i'm sure a lot more things. All that costs money that has to come from somewhere. Our rich fishing grounds are soon to be EU free, free from utterly farcical regulations and red tape. To give that straight back to Brussels and their gravy train would surely be barmy. The SNP are a dangerous lot, their only concerned with independence no matter what the cost long term to Scotland. I agree with the above poster, yes get the best possible terms for us within the Union (which was fairly won in Indy Ref 1) and concentrate on governing Scotland, thus spending less time on massaging personal ego's within the SNP.
  4. Another reason to hardly bother with objection letters as it seemed from day one this project was ring fenced to happen regardless of the views of local residents. The whole affair from start to finish reeks....
  5. Came across this past thread recently and it got me thinking....This is Lerwick's busiest ever cruise season (79) this year and even more next year (80+) i do think a deeper berthing facility can't come soon enough. The new Holmsgarth pier will no doubt take larger ships, although the tight turning basin off Holmsgarth will limit size to an extent. The proposal long term is to reclaim outwards from the current fish market, but if and when they do so remains to be seen. My two pennies worth of a solution would be personally to extend Victoria Pier outwards, as the water depth even 30m out is 10m or more.
  6. Had a delightfully dry, almost stale muffin in the Peerie Shop Cafe the other week. Pointless raising an objection as most of the lasses bar one were just out of nappies. :/
  7. Looking at the photo stream of Nicola on the Hjaltland via social media all i want to know is did she cough up her £18.50 for the Magnus Lounge like us mere mortals have to?
  8. Delighted to hear that Twerto, just please don't paint it Grey.....
  9. Having toddled along the street today i couldn't help but despair at the state of the place, the gable end of the stage door is a disgrace, with historic paintwork from a bygone era appearing through the last coat applied. The slabs are a mish mash of slate/tarmac akin to a chess board, perhaps hop scotch could become an event on "da street" in the next shopping week jamboree. The picnic tables i see have vanished, these i believe were quite popular. Now i know our summer has been not the best but were not even in August yet, grief who's call was that! The whole street in general looks shabby, i think Beirut could probably put it to shame. Also whist not exactly in the town centre, i hope some plans are in place to protect Da Lodberrie as i have to say they are really starting to show serious signs of wear and tear. These are but a few observations, i'm sure others have other issues that i may have overlooked to add..
  10. I'm hearing a whisper that the Freefield building will soon be an Indian eatery.
  11. As papsy noted earlier in this thread a generally Westerly wind should not really stop/cause any huge delays as has happened of late. Perhaps they should re-name NorthLink <NOrthLINK>
  12. Hrossey alongside in Hatston since last night until 11:45 tonight, yet again Shetland treated as second class. So looking into the future when bigger ferries come along with the Nigg Bay development is this habit to keep dodging trips to guarantee a vessel being in the correct position going to continue?
  13. And another point, would the LPA really have spent millions on dredging the north channel just so a bridge could be plonked right across the said channel? I don't think so.
  14. I don't have figures myself, but there is an awful lot of oil related movements out the Nort Channel. To be honest it's as much if not more than using the sooth mooth. A bridge in that area may be the obvious choice but unless the LPA are satisfied by the type and position, i think it's unlikely ever to get built. With high winds etc i still think a tunnel is the way to go.
  15. Anybody looking forward to the Eurodam in the morning will be disappointed as she's cancelled due to i presume weather, heading from Bergen to Thorshavn direct
  16. Having been along Tesco's earlier today i have to say for the first time the shop seems to be struggling to cope with demand for goods since i guess the dot.com facility was launched. Standards appear to be starting to slide, namely poor availability across large parts of the store with some aisles pretty bare and very long queues at the tills with not enough staff , plus the express till being closed didn't help matters too. Perhaps Tesco have just got a little to greedy in trying to expand to much as things are a shambles there just now. Other shops get a bashing on here frequently when they deserve it so this time the spotlight shines on Tesco's.
  17. Wheelsup your so right it does look like a negative....literally.
  18. A bleak looking battleship grey, you might not see it in da mist!
  19. Well i must say what an inspirational colour scheme the freefield pharmacy has been painted today...let's all pray it's an undercoat.
  20. Number 6 heading this way to Lerwick, not a barge but the cruise ship Gemini.
  21. Guess phone NorthLink....they would surely be able to at least get your car as a worst case scenario on the freight ship, you on the passenger ship and meet up together in the deen. Think the freighter is down on their timetable for a 10am arrival in Aberdeen as it goes via Kirkwall on the way down.
  22. What about the freight vessel on Saturday evening? Hear the food is rather yummy on there, and you get well looked after....
  23. Well in honesty neither do i, but i do know these islands miss out on far more than we receive.
  24. I have said for a long time that those passengers that elect to stay in Lerwick have very little in the way of things to do. That is just the way things are, there are not that many attractions around when you think about it. The establishment up here just have not got a clue, much more could be at least tried for these visitors than is happening. The amount of passengers yesterday i helped with directions even with their hand held maps (which in my opinion still could be better than what they are) was a lot. I don't know why they couldn't have something like in the London marathon ie thin Blue line to Museum, Red for Lodberries & Knab walk etc, Yellow to the entrance of Fort Charlotte (which loads of people can never find).
  25. So much for the promises - i note the toilets have now closed.
