There is evidence to support all of those accusations against Boris Johnson.

And yes, the same accusations were levelled against Trump, and again there is abundant evidence to back them up.

Trump is fond of saying the US economy is the strongest it's ever been, but that is factually inaccurate. The US economy is quite strong at the moment, but there have been many periods is recent history when the US economy was in much better shape, and most positive trends under Trump are largely the result of policies put in place during the recovery from the 2008 financial crisis that pre-dated his administration.

Trump's fondness for protectionist and populist economic policies, and trade wars, are generally considered to have had a negative impact on the economy.

I totally disagree. We don't have the talent in sculpture that is required for the project, and you want the best talent available from anywhere, not just local. Most of the people complaining don't want any money wasted on art, but it is art money it can't be used for other services as some folk think. There is definitely a need for more art work around the streets and hills of Shetland. Look at any other country.

Neil Riddell's letter is a fine example of democracy in action, Boris may have won the election but that doesn't mean his opponents should down tools and remain silent.

No he didn't. The UK wasn't even a signatory of the 1957 Treaty. You've posted this same mis-information many times.

The facts don't support this opinion. Recent polls indicate a small majority in support of independence, the result of an upward trend over the past few years. And of course it's possible to be an independent country and member of the EU, and 62% of Scottish voters wished to remain in the EU at the referendum.

^ it's worth noting that the film was made by a group that receives significant funding from the oil and gas industry. On of their key themes is that mitigating against climate change will damage the economy.

Quote from the film "current economic policies pointlessly, grievously undermine the economic system putting lives at risk in countries denied access to affordable, continuous electrical power. We urge you to follow a climate policy based on sound science, realistic economics and genuine concern for those harmed by costly, and unnecessary attempts at mitigation"

Make of that what you will.

Must we!?! Any mention of voting yet again has the majority of folk I know wishing there was a support group for folk suffering from a chronic overdose of elections, or trying to see if they can find their Prozac.

Is our fishing industry really wiped out? It seems to be thriving now. Not enough locals to man all the boats, theres some crewed up with immigrants. Is the danger now that this current boom might be reversed if we lose our European markets.

This type of rhetoric, and use of language is exactly why the news today is all about the need for all sides to calm down. It’s doing nothing but ‘firing up’ the debate and creating further divisions.

The discussions or ‘playing to the audience’ in parliament yesterday was nothing more than an absolute disgrace by all sides. Whilst this continues there will be no way forward.

Boris and his authoritarian Tory government have tried to bypass parliament twice and both times they've been found guilty of abusing their power by the highest court in the land. Thankfully in this country we've learned from history that the best way to prevent tin pot dictators taking over is to force them to abide by the rule of law.
The only problem for me is where is the punishment? Anybody involved should be expelled from parliament and forbidden to stand for office again imho.

@Davie P - I read that FullFacts web page too after viewing the video; however, like a load of other stuff on the internet, we don't really know that's accurate either!  'After all, if it's on the interwebz, it must be twueeeeee!'

@ DavieP - When they were debating the No Deal in the House of Lords, one Lord spoke about it.  There should be a House of Lords' television recording of it somewhere and it was that part of the recording that was circulating on Facebook.  I think the referral to the Treaty was that other bits of it come into force in January 2020.

Thank you for this call for reason Windwalker.

This is a good time to remind folk of the Forum use guidelines and netiquette. The last 6 points are particularly relevant.

Opinions and casual observations are always welcome on Shetlink, but if someone is going to a make a sustained and/or assertive case then they should provide "evidence or reasoning".

In this case, some individuals have made vigorous, unequivocal and/or disparaging posts over an extended period and should expect robust responses.

We urge folk to be respectful and empathetic of each others' opinions and help others to understand your opinion through considered and respectful posts. After-all, most of us are neighbours on this peerie island and there's no need to be 'faa-in a fightin'!

Completely agree Davy, but it’s the way some look to demand answers and can’t wait to find fault rather than engage in the discussion.

If you look back through the forums you see a lot of names who used to post on a regular basis, some of them who I know have said that they gave up due to their posts being attacked.

There are people of all walks of life, some who will do their homework before posting and other who might just react to a post that interests them, but when they feel they are being ‘got at’ they just fade into the darkness and we are then left with a small number of strongly opinionated folk.

Most folk don’t need the hassle in their lives, so don’t bother posting which is a shame as it doesn't give a balanced view.

Look it up, for heaven's sake! Don't keep asking the same thing over and over here! If you're going to complain about something, at least make some effort to find out what you're complaning about

You can trade freely with your local shop because you are in the same country with the same laws, currency, tax arrangements, safety standards etc etc. If you want to trade across borders, you need trade agreements - hence the various EU trade agreements and harmonisation.

Re: 'a regime in which we have little say'. Nonsense. We are/were one of the most influential partners in the EU.

With the greatest respect, your recent analogies of comparing Brexit to the Y2K computing system upgrade and comparing international trade agreements with nipping to the local shop would indicate you haven't fully grasped the complexities of Brexit.

    Agreed.

We were told that Brexit would bring untold benefits to the UK and that we'd be able to pick and choose which bits of EU membership we wished to retain. We were warned from many quarters that Brexit would be a complex issue to resolve, but were told by the 'Leave' politicians it would be easy.

Many people didn't either didn't see the benefit of leaving the EU or didn't believe the rhetoric and voted for the status quo in the referendum, others did believe it and voted to leave.

Since the vote, the utopian Brexit vision has proven to be undeliverable through a combination of 'unforeseen circumstances' which should have been thoroughly investigated before the referendum (the Irish backstop and the complexity of much of the legislation, for example), the EU understandably sticking to their negotiating guns and the government being unable to find a consensus or even a majority for one of the many flavours of Brexit that was promised.

Now the very people who set this train in motion are blaming those who didn't want it in the first place for not getting on board and supporting the increasingly extreme vision and attempts to circumvent laws and parliamentary processes (however, our governmental executive and the legislature branches, and independent judiciary, seem to be holding up relatively well in the face of these attempts).
