  1. They do grow here. We have several different colours and sizes in our garden but I wouldn't use them as windbreaks. We use daisy bush, flowering currant, rosa rugosa (although that is very invasive and needs to be kept under control) and fuschia.
  2. We often stay at the Express in Chapel St but did spend one night at the Premier Inn on West North Street last week courtesy of Loganair who picked up the tab for dinner, bed and breakfast. It was quiet and peaceful - and they paid. What could be better.
  3. Mainland is the largest island of Shetland. Scotland is Scotland. We all live in Shetland - Northmavine, Shetland, Yell, Shetland etc. We go to Scotland for shopping/hospital and so on......
  4. Yes, but that is instant delivery (in the hand) without delivery costs and with instant comback if anything goes wrong. Sometimes that's worth paying a bit more for.
  5. Khit, How about a double buggy? Then you won't have to worry about the reins.
  6. Ghostriders interpretation is much more accurate.
  7. Ask a friend to fetch you. Wait until the evening and take the later bus which does go through. Hitch if you don't have too much luggage. Advertise beforehand on Shetlink to see if anybody is travelling that way around that time and offer them a fiver towards petrol..
  8. Advertise for lessons in the Times or on Shetlaink.
  9. Is that "wee white sparrow" not a snow bunting?
  10. But if there's no power, how do you get the updates off Shetlink?????
  11. Put the seed in hanging feeders - they can't manage them. Or use a ground feeding station with a mesh top for those birds who prefer to feed at low level. Then put a little out for the rock doves on the ground as they are starving too!
  12. We are just back form Cunningsburgh and all is well. if you take care, there isn't a problem.
  13. They are wild. These are rock doves.
  14. Looking at what the forecast is sayingfor the next week, I would try to get on an earlier flight if possible and if that's looking dicey, opt for da boat. We are hoping to get to Edinburgh to family for Christmas and leaving by boat on Sunday, driving down. Good luck all round.
  15. Yes, that was the great bit, Zog. Mam was always there. The children in the village probably got to school but we never even thought about it as we were having so much fun. Three miles in uncleared thigh deep snow was considered too far for us primary school children to walk with no school lunches (We took a bannack and a small bottle of milk for lunch at that time) so we stayed home a lot that winter.
  16. Never mind the snow. The road north of Voe is flooded by overflowing and blocked drains which can't cope with the volume. We slid through but don't know if it has been cleared now.
  17. I remember in the Fifties that we had 7 weeks off school which we loved. Zog obviously lived next door to the school and could get there more easily but we were 3 miles away and the road was blocked for four weeks open for ten days and then blocked for a further 3 weeks. We walked over the ice on the top of the burn to the sea (don't tell Mam) and made igloos. We dried our clothes and boots on the Rayburn overnight and went out again next day. We never tired of it. We lived on tattie soup, reestit mutton, saat piltocks, ling and saat herring for weeks and loved every minute. Mam was probably getting tired of it by the end and struggling to keep us dry, milk the kye, dig a gaet to the hens etc etc but we were happy. Dad was out with the plough.
  18. Ask the Red Cross. They lend out ordinary non electric wheelchairs for short periods but don't know about motorised. Worth asking as they might have additional information.

    Streamline

why is everybody picking on Streamline? I actually thought their idea of publicizing the bringing of deliveries to the halls in light of the fact that everybody is impatient to get their parcels (and deliveries have been delayed by many circumstances beyond their control - snow, Aberdeen harbour closures due to tides, high winds cancelling boats) was extremely innovative and useful. But people always want to criticize. I guess that's because they are sat indoors in the warmth while drivers struggle through the snow and walk miles with deliveries (slowing them down enormously) as side roads are blocked and drives impassible. There are other couriers who are much less reliable (and |I mention no names) and less courteous.

    Streamline

Quite right, Zebedee. Everything is delayed - loads of stuff scheducled to come by post (Amazon orders etc) have not arrived in the normal time so we just have to wait. It's not actually life threatening, is it???
  21. Try Appliance Rescue, Sean Fillingham. He's very good.
  22. Oh dear, bug, what's twartled dee? Frances is a professional and as such, will do whatever is necessary to help. Paramedics often take a long time to arrive as theiy are stretched all over the island. There is no need to attack people for helping as much as possible. Let's hope you never need them.
  23. Don't know who is cheffing but the food was good as was the staff and service. Our under five loved it and it certainly made sense to let him eat free considering the size of him and the small amount he eats. Will certainly go again.
