  1. People who say : "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve". And then pause, fold their arms, and look at you as if they said something both incredibly original and profound. Arghhhh.
  2. Buying and selling on tickets for inflated prices will always happen, I see no practical way of stopping it, and is hugely unfair both to the real fans and the bands they follow. Full marks to the Shetlink team for pulling those ads. One less outlet for 'em
  3. The problem is, every comment on the thorny subject of the SIC's failure to communicate will be *specific*, very few people have "unspecific" thoughts or experiences. I can appreciate the sentiment, but really, and not said unkindly, it just feels like an exercise in box ticking.
  4. Thank you for understanding my point, Ghostrider and Muppet. For one horrible moment there, I thought I had dropped into a parallel universe!
  5. While I am all for a healthy debate, I am taken aback by some of the comments made on a public forum by those purporting to be representatives of Her Majesty's Coastguard. I can only assume there is no code of conduct for that agency, which is a shame, as, imho, the insulting and inflammatory remarks written here are ungentlemanly, unprofessional, and unbecoming to H.M. Coastguard as a whole.
  6. I spent a small fortune going to see Flight of the Conchords in Glasgow this May. Wazz 'em here, please
  7. ^^ Agreed, EM. It's a problem with your software and can be fixed! Becky, sent you PM with details of local hypnotherapist.
  8. Michelle Wishart Travel Counsellor PHONE: 0845 058 7030 EMAIL: michelle.wishart@travelcounsellors.com WEB: www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/Michelle.Wishart ^^ details of one of the agents who used to work there. She was very helpful to me.
  9. Khitajrah, as you are a mother of young children who lives in Shetland, I would have thought that relating your honest experience would be of interest to Becky, who I very much doubt will make a life changing decision based on a dozen forum posts.
  10. Hello there Becky. Living in Shetland isn't really different from living anywhere else in the UK. Pros and cons, but all is a compromise. And people are pretty much the same no matter where in the world you go. Personally, the best of Shetland is its stunning scenery, and the worst is the expense of living here. (And if you plan to have family and friends visit or vice versa you should be aware how expensive travelling to and from Shetland can be). Crime rate is low, but all is relative..I have only been a victim of crime twice, but both times happened here. In other words, it won't be any better or worse then where you live now, except with windier sheep maybe. As for quality of life...sometimes its not where you live but where your head is that determines your happiness.* Good luck, whatever you decide to do. *does not apply to Gaza Strip before some bright spark points that out.
  11. You can read Lovecraft for free online. Copyright on his writings expired this year. http://www.templeofdagon.com/lovecraft-archive/stories/
  12. No worries Fjool : http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/series/howtowrite sorted!

  14. ^^ not entirely sure, perhaps the Fetlar community council can help you : Officer: Martha Devine Address: New House Mid Brake Cullivoe Yell ZE2 9DD Phone: 07721918764 E-Mail: fetlarcc@yahoo.co.uk
  15. ^^ Absolutely, Fifi. There is clearly a need for more further/higher education here...apparently more people per capita in Shetland use the OU then anywhere else in the UK. But when I asked the OU which tutorials were held here in the last few years they said none .. it's just not practicable, as the range of courses studied are so broad. I think the OU is a wonderful institution, with a lot of online help being available to students, but the lack of face to face tutorials could hamper those studying maths or sciences. Yes, there is Shetland College, but again, with such a small population here the courses are limited. Damn shame.
  16. I booked 6 flights through TravelScope earlier this year. Think I paid an extra £20 for the service.
  17. Kind of you Fjool. Make mine a 99?
  18. I agree with Crofter..if it is at all practicable, I would suggest renting a home at first. Moving to Shetland is a big step, without the added pressure of having to find your dream house first. Private rents in Lerwick are horrific, but further afield they seem to settle at around £400 pcm (and maybe you could even cut a deal as you will be here in the winter months) and thankfully living in the sticks does not necessarily mean compromising your broadband speed Whatever you decide to do, good luck with the move.
  19. I found Shetlink when looking for something else entirely, and my introduction to this place was reading the “Ghost Stories†thread in the History section. I thought it was not only very interesting (I still have flashbacks to Njugle's post of 20th March 2006 on that topic) but at times absolutely hilarious I do think though, that in the last year or so, the tone has changed a bit..even the most innocuous threads can get a bit vicious and “personal†very quickly, which is really why I would prefer to stay (sort of) anonymous...I really do not want to get caught up in any of that. Although, funnily enough, the reason I registered in the first place was because I took exception to one particular post, which I found offensive beyond belief. Due to a Shetlink glitch, my registration was not recognised for a week, by that time the topic had moved on and I realised that fanning the flames would be a bit pointless. On the whole though, this forum is entertaining and even informative, looks to me as if membership is growing, and I think that is thanks to not even the anonymous option so much, as the sensible moderation.
  20. And this is why I am annoyed with the proposed EU rules, it's taking away my choice. Well, tough cheese, basically. If you are not prepared to be tested on, fair enough. But I don't see why another creature should be forced to take your place. Like I said in my first post, in my opinion, human rights and animal rights should co-exist. I am tempted to say "Earth does not belong to humans", but am worried I might start sounding like a hippie. (I do hope you realise I say the above in the spirit of the debate..not a personal attack, coz I don't do them )
  21. Hiya ArabiaTerra. I don't think I can really add much more to my first post on this topic...everything I said there holds true. Sadly I am not very eloquent when putting my thoughts down in words, which is a shame as this is a subject I feel passionate about. You asked how we felt about using products that were NOT tested on animals..again, can only refer you to my earlier post..yes, I am willing to take that risk. At least I have the luxury of choice. For those who are not too clear what anti-vivisection support entails, they might want to visit http://www.navs.org.uk/home/. And to see how animals are treated, well, plenty of stuff on the net, such as or http://www.youtube.com/AnimalDefenders I warn you, those videos are upsetting. You could argue they are purposefully emotive and subjective. You may be right, but in my opinion, they serve a purpose. Am not trying to convert you btw I think that when it comes to the area of animal testing, you either fundamentally believe that humans have the right to exploit a creature more vulnerable then themselves, or a the responsibility to protect them. I would not class myself as an activist by any means, but would encourage people to at least conduct their own research into the matter, and decide for themselves if they think the end justifies the means.
  22. Ah....hem...no. First off, I would say that as cosmetics are not an absolute necessity of human life, I am unimpressed that they need to be tested on animals at all. And, well, the key words in the latter article are “....MAY be increasing the risk of common skin cancers..†and “ The significance of the findings for humans has still to be established....†That is not proof, it is barely a hypothesis. And even if it were a “factâ€, surely that is an argument against using moisturisers, rather then allowing further vivisection. Yes, I use moisturisers and make up and bubble bath etc...I make sure (well, at least I certainly do my best) that I buy products that are not tested on animals. And if that puts my health at risk, well, heck, at least I had a choice in whether I stick this stuff on myself, so more fool me. Do I want an animal to suffer so I can wear the new bare rose lipstick? Would that make any sense? In other words, I do not believe that human rights and animal rights are mutually exclusive.
  23. Hiya Johan, no offence taken at all matey In fact, cannot fault your post at all, you make a lot of sense. I think the point I was trying to make, in my muddle headed way, was that although yes, people move to Shetland and use their services, Shetland people also move to other parts of the UK, and the world, and make use of their services. Which, in my opinion is quite right and how it should be. After all, we are all just people living our lives and trying our best to be happy, eh? What I don't like is the ills of a few being blamed on the many. I think that is unhelpful. People should be judged on their character/actions/integrity, not the accident of their birth. Chuh, well, in an ideal world anyway.....
  24. "..druggies, soothmoothers etc.." cos yep, the two are basically indistinguishable. Anti-Shetlander? I think more likely adopting the practice of all local authorities, ie giving housing on priority, as opposed to whether you were born in Somerset, Swansea or Shetland. Is the system abused? Very probably. NOT confined to Shetland. And, no, am not a SIC/Hjaltland renter myself.
