  8. I don't have one personally, but know of a couple of people and community groups who have ones. You might be best asking Shetland Wind Power, they have installed several around Shetland over the years and would have a fair idea as to what would work and what wouldn't up here.
  9. Hi Does anyone know who you contact about a table/stall at the Walls Show?
  10. Rumour has it that it is a few local guys in partnership with one of the old empolyee's. The the sooner it is up and running again the better, MOT's and service's on wir door step again!
  11. I also remember there being some sort of biological study being done by somebody, whereby if you caught and killed them in a certain way, froze them and brought them to whoever it was doing the study they would give you some money for them. Think it had something to do with the scientists wanting to learn more about there eating habits as if we don't already know!
  12. Not sure if it was the councils idea or who's it was, but I have heard that story too. I think if I remember rightly many of them were released at the golf course at Dale and were left to bump-off the rabbits and then run wild and breed all over shetland, killing everybodies poultry and pets.
  13. Here is a link to the myspace page 'The Mortal' an unsigned band from just outside Glasgow who are looking to spread their fan base. Let us know what you think an we will forward your comments on to the band. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=167276672
  14. The lassies at Sharp Image do a good job as does Jon Stones.
  15. Me, my sister, my mum and my gran all learned from Colin MacAulay and all passed first time. Would recommend him, patience of a saint.
  16. To be honest you would be better off getting Shetland Transport to take your stuff up as it will work out a lot cheaper. I just moved back up to Shetland and looked at various ways of getting all my stuff up and that way worked out the cheapest.
  17. Like Shetlander said in the previous post most of the Schools which are being built outside of Shetland are being built through Public Private Partnerships due to the local authorities not having the money to construct the buildings they require. For example in Aberdeen there is a Public Private Partnership which is building and maintaining 3-5 new schools which the city council required.
  18. Does anyone know anything about Park Hall in Bixter? I'm meant to be doing a university project on the building, but at present I'm having difficulty find info. Any info anyone could give me would be much appreciated. Also for anyone who happens to know the area or building, any comments you have on the building, such as whether or not you think something should be done with it or your opinion on it being a listed building etc, comments such as these would also be greatly appreciated.
  19. Have to admit that the prices in there are getting to be way too high! When I started working there about 5 years ago I thought it was fairly expensive, but when I left a couple of years ago the prices were higher and on a visit home I went in and the prices were worse than that of the 'Starbucks' and 'Costas' of the world. On a brighter note, you can't beat one of those bannocks!
  20. Used to work at the Peerie Shop Cafe and used to get complimented for the strength of the espressos that I made with a layer of crema on top, however haven't worked there for a few years now so can't really comment on the standard now-a-days.
  21. I am personally very grateful that everyone got out ok, as one of the workers is close family and other family stay/work and go to school near the garage. Future of the garage is unknown at the moment as it all depends on what the bosses and insurance company decide, although I think they are trying to find somewhere to do work temporarilly. Heres hoping the garage gets rebuilt in the not too distant future!
  22. There are sites to the west of Shetland currently being explored for oil and there is believed to be a large oil field located on the border between UK and Icelandic waters. This is believed to be going to provide oil and jobs for at least 20-30 years.
  23. When talking to friends and family from all over Scotland and England they all seem to be amazed by the fact that class sizes here are so much lower than on the mainland and say that they would love to be able to have that situation for their kids so they can all get the attention and education that they need. They were also surprised that kids go to the school that is nearest to them, no questions asked, instead of the competition like systems down south. All of the people I spoke to about this said this was a much more effective way to manage things and if they had the choice they would love for this to be the case down there as well. One other point they made was that it doesn't seem to matter which school in Shetland you look at they all have great records of a achievement when it comes to the people who have been taught there, whether it be by them going on to college/university, further training or getting a job. They have also said that they themselves could have benifited from an education like this and would have loved to have had this opertuninty, stating that some of us do not know how lucky we are when it comes to this. There have been many more positive comments which have been made to myself including comments from university lecturers saying how dedicated they find students from Shetland. Surely comments like this is a testiment to the standard of education provided in the schools in Shetland and asks the question - why would we want to change something which is obviously working and arguebly a better system than on the Mainland? On a personal note I was in a very small primary class, which meant that slacking off in class was not an option and this also meant that I worked hard in primary, which then continued into my secondary years. Once again in secondary I was in a realitavley small class and although standard grade options where perhaps not as extensive as in the mainland, I was able to study all of the classes which I wanted to do through liasing with teachers and ended up been able to do 9 standard grades instead of the normal 8, gaining credit passes in all, which I do not believe I would have gained in any other environment. Afterward I went on to the AHS for 5th & 6th year gaining the qualifications I required to go to university and now I am now due to graduate later this year and I put a lot of my success and progress down to the education I recieved whilst in Shetland.
