  1. Scrap that, I found a lady named Ann Simpson. A moderator might want to delete this post since it's no longer needed. Thanks
  2. Can anyone send me any contact information for people who do dress alterations please? I need some dresses taken up before my wedding end of July. Kindest regards Cheryl
  3. Hello, my name is Cheryl Hughson and I am currently studying to become a music teacher at the University of Aberdeen. I have chosen to study Shetland Song for my dissertation, and I intend to explore the issue of conservation and personal enjoyment of this rare and beautiful genre of music. I would more than appreciate if you could spare a few minutes to answer my questionnaires that will contribute to my dissertation. Your information will not be stored and you will be 100% anonymous. I have created two questionnaires for people to fill out on the internet, one is aimed at the general public and the other "Composers of Shetland Song" is aimed at composers or people who are currently writing in the Shetland Song Style. Anyone who has written songs in the past is more than welcome to take part, as is anyone who simply has an interest. A bonus to me would be if you had the time to fill both questionnaires out, they are both short, and shouldn't take too much time. General: (10 questions) http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TZZF9FH Composers: (9 questions) http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MK39NSX I wish to extend my gratitude and sincerest thanks to anyone who will participate, and donate their time towards my research. Thankyou very much, and the kindest regards to you all Cheryl Hughson BMus Education Year 4 University of Aberdeen[/u]
  4. Hi I've been trying to send a PM but it keeps sending to my outbox. So when I tried to send an email to the Shetlink admin, I can't get past the word verification. No matter how perfectly slow or right that I get it. I even got people to sit and watch me so I know I'm doing it right!! Help =[
  5. Which is why we need to preserve the Blanket Bog, not disturb it in any way, whatsoever. This means not building on it, not digging it up, not using it for fuels, not walking on it, not driving on it. List is endless. Construction sites should maybe be preferred on peat-less land. In places where energy consumption is high they should provide themselves with the main whack of power. Resulting in less carbon footprint all around, due to the fact you wouldn't need to look far for power.
  6. http://www.ukbap.org.uk/UKPlans.aspx?ID=21 paulb, blanket bog is a good thing.
  7. But instead of just relying on wind there's other options becoming available. Yes put up turbines to do us for the very short term, then back it up with other sources as they become available. As for my carbon footprint I'd need to figure out what I spend on electricity, dig up some old invoices. Since i only use my poor little house for sleeping in, as I work alot. all work and no play as they say. Plant more trees! Offset the carbon. Yeh, keep doing the little things and it all adds up in the bigger picture. Sorry mods this topic seems to be shifting over to carbon content, maybe we should set up another thread for this?
  8. Well I never asked you to prove your life to me, but since we're confessing here. I too do not have a tv, I wash my clothes on the lowest setting, I dry them on the line, or drip dry in the house. I use Ecover cleaning products, which is ecological. I re-use my bags, I recycle my paper, plastics, tins and glass. I re-use old clothes for crafts and other uses. I compost and I don't buy too much food for waste. I only put one black bag out a week or every two weeks. And I grow my own produce, I support local produce. Is that what you wanted to know? Because if I could I would do a heck of a lot more. But you will at least admit the human lifestyle is helluva consumming one. At least if everyone, not just you and me and the small amount of people that do, make this efforts we're taking small steps to ease the rate of consumption. Therefore giving us time and money to harness of all ways we can combat Global Warming, not just relying on wind when it is can be wildly unreliable. Or as they would say, putting all our eggs in one basket.
  9. Ghost rider has a very solid point though on the fact as long as humans are here, destruction is inevitable. Giving the need to build more shelter for the ever-increasing population and this conversation could go on. Unfortunately the idea of a cull would be inhumane! But it never stopped us from wiping out several species just because of what a pest they were or how tasty the meat was or the fact humans encroached into their habitats. So now we're planning to evict Shetland's local birds from their own habitats because we want to put giant wind turbines there to feed our greedy lifestyles? When the bird population is already decreasing dangerously. But giving our human nature we don't care as long as we can continue with all our "important" leisures like watching TV, or driving our cars for the 5 minutes walk to the shop.
  10. Do you know what's getting me down about the whole thing? People who dismiss my point of view on the visual impact and nature impact among other things about the windfarm. People who brand me as narrow-minded merely because I have an opposing view to them. That's bullies, and that's all that the windfarm supporters have shown is arrogance lately. Reading a letter of someone praising Craig Birnies blatantly ignorant and spiteful letter recently makes me think these people are made of something nasty. At least have the good sportsmanship to refrain from making this debate personal by not passing derogatory comments at anyone who opposes your views. It makes you look like some sort of Jehovahs Witness who's deperate for people to believe in your God, but in reality those people are desperate for you to get out of their face.
  11. The whole thing is quite absurd! Yet another example of "bigger is always better" I say its not the size that counts its how you use it
  12. ^^^ Yet they are now totally self reliant, and once the debt has been paid off they won't have to answer to anyone, ever. It's definately a community project, and just what a community project should be. Unlike with the windfarm which there has been talk -in the past, i'm not sure if this is still the case- that will be sold to outside companies, therefore making it all the more unlocal and out of our control. We wouldn't have our say in the matter (not that we already do mind you, or at least that's how it feels, since any opinion we have seems to be quashed by pushy folks like you) So try to take a breather and let other people have their opinion without sniping on this forum the whole time.
  13. I'd far rather see a little bit of everything being used/exercised. Wind, Wave, Solar. You dont have to base your other alternative choices on nuclear alone. Keep on recycling, and keep your minds and hearts open.
  14. My christmas tree is dying horribly, will it ever make a come back? Problem is, its in a huge tub (tree's bout 2 feet tall) but I don't want to plant it in my landlords garden as it was a gift from my boyfriend's mother. any tips? We also spent all of yesterday in the lovely sunshine digging out overgrown squares in the boyfriend's mother's veggie plot, giving her a chance to plant this years tatties or whatever she'd like to plant. Also set up a frame over another square with which we covered with light white fleece to keep birds off the strawberries. Can't wait to reap the benefits!
