  1. worth asking at Stronachs or Gairs, don't think any of the garages can do the whole lot and very much doubt you'll get the laser up here....
  2. Taken right from the document you posted ULS... I would think this is personal information thus not applicable to FOI requests
  3. I see they've removed this frame...ya can still see him in the window in the next shot in the road tho
  4. There is another option I think a few folk have tried up here and it seems to work well. Fence posts, salmon feed pipe and a poly tunnel cover. Laurence Smith in Bigton has tunnels made like this and they seem to last quite well! good if you're into your recycling too
  5. not cheap afaik but they seem to last the winters up here http://www.solardome.co.uk/ don't buy a cheap aluminum and plastic sheet one, they will blow away even in a summer gale
  6. I think the Kiln in Scalloway used to do poker nights, not sure about other venues though.
  7. I shouldn't think it's a problem unless you're making a nuisance of yourself and parking in their way Thinking on it the one halfway down the hill mite be chained...but I'm sure if you asked whoever nicely they'd let you in. You're in Scotland now remember, no trespassing laws as long as you're not damaging anything or leaving gates open you're not breaking any laws no matter what the signs say
  8. Even the council agrees it has to close schools, but as soon as it tries everyone is up in arms....its a loose loose situation. People have to realise we can't afford to keep schools open for a handfull of pupils when a short bus ride takes them to a bigger school just down the road.
  9. in two words....Social....Care.... how many public run care homes are there in Orkney compared to shetland? In fact how many schools are there in Orkney? between those two I bet you'd find most of those jobs Infiltrator
  10. Actually not.....you're better off over the hill here http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Shetland,+United+Kingdom&ll=60.430418,-1.183519&spn=0.018721,0.054331&t=h&z=14 or here http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Shetland,+United+Kingdom&ll=60.412687,-1.226692&spn=0.009366,0.027165&t=h&z=15 enclosed sandy pool or sheltered voe with vehicle access all the way down or there's Voe it's self, launch opposite the pier head.... or graven even, there's a few slips to choose from You can always try toft voe, the tidal rip doesn't come in that far and if you can make it past the ferry pier you're plain sailing all the way to the sandy beach anyhoo have fun n b safe
  11. ^ Dave you'll get Stoned out o Cunjo for saying things like that
  12. I'd love to know how you those figures make sense in your head Paul, there's possibly 300 new posts need filling in the coming year not 800 There's been 250 a year for the past 2 years..most likely in social care. The only way to stem the flow of jobs in social care is to sell it all off to private companies. Then would we have the same level of care everyone expects up here? Probably not. There's a real simple way to save money in the Shetland Council, shut schools and sell off care homes. However then there would be a public outcry! Do we really need 16 schools in the North mainland alone? (not counting the isles) But as you say who is going to pay for it when the Goverment stops the funding? [/u]
  13. Appliance rescue in Voe is who Khit's probably speaking about... numbers should be in the phone book The dump is out the Rova head road (past the greenhead base in lerwick on the upper road) if you can get someone with a trailer it should be free to dump it all in their skips etc as long as you're not a business
  14. can you no try it in a loch like voe or Girlsta? Girlsta probs the easiest to get the boat to the edge o the water... just a thought
  15. absolutely Fleabee, folk want and get the best social care in the country but don't seem to realise that that means employing someone to do the job and of course we can't close any schools, even if they only have a handfull of pupils...simply because parent's don't want them traveling the extra distance to go to a bigger school where they can make more friends outwith their family members
  16. Its here EM http://www.shetlink.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8293
  17. here's where the council now advertises jobs... https://www.myjobscotland.gov.uk/fe/tpl_scottishportal01.asp?KEY=30307372&C=235441358234&PAGESTAMP=sesvrylzqchdjxzmco&nexts=INIT_JOBLISTSTART&nextss=&mode=1&newQuery=yes&searchtext=&searchdivision=1156&searchindustry=0&searchrefno=&formsubmit4=Search+and+Apply look how many roddy men they're looking for....my guess is none the jobs section there has been social care and education for as long as I can remember!
  18. Th Co-op in Lerwick is probably the cheapest place to buy compost, they also get containers in which are probably the cheapest around (unless you get tubs you can recycle) Garriock bros, LBC and possibly Hirebase in lerwick for toolhire. best way to get rid of the Heather tho is to dig a strip around the area you want and burn it off, be carefull tho as it can jump the strip so you have to tend it while it burns or you could end up wi a hill fire And as AR says, leave it a month after what the packets say...after the last frost is best to plant up here, we have had hail showers in June
  19. don't look good..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girdling mesh around the base of the trees to stop the bunnies egtting to themn may be a good idea next time, that or a rifelman on 24hr watch
  20. how do you explain the jets that leave no contrails then?
  21. not in Shetland but this was quite an amazing story... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8510314.stm
  22. Maybe because they are trained to judge speeds..... They may not be able to differentiate between 33 & 38 or 60 and 70 for that matter but it's easy enough to judge the speed of an aproaching vehicle. Every driver is trained in this to an extent when learning to drive, it's the difference between pulling out in front of someone at a junction and fitting into the gaps.... Stand next to a road sometime and you may notice some cars drive quicker than others, it doesn't take long before you know roughly how quick they're going...Specially if you have a device in your hands that can confirm what you're thinking
  23. That's not what the guidelines say though is it paul, they're supposed to judge the speed of the vehicle first then target it, not the other way around. As I quoted before The device confirms and corroborates their prior personal opinion
